Я думаю, СМИ имеет огромную силу. Любая информация влияет на людей очень сильно. Иногда мы даже не представляем, но средства массовой информации может принести нам много пользы и вреда.
Суть заключается в том, что СМИ может доносить до нас верную и ложную информацию. Мы смотрим телевизор каждый день, слушаем радио и читаем газеты. Моим любимым средством является интернет. Вообще-то я считаю, что интернет стал самым популярным СМИ во всем мире. Все подростки и взрослые сегодня следят за новостями в интернете. Это очень удобно и есть доступ 24/7. Тут вы сможете найти любую информацию по всему миру, проследить за экстренными выпусками и много чего ещё.
ТВ сегодня становится менее популярным, я считаю. Многие люди выбирают жизнь без ТВ. Интернет заменяет ТВ. Я этому не удивлена, потому что даже я не интересуюсь ТВ больше.
Радио люди слушают, когда находятся за рулем. Я считаю, радио было изобретено именно для этого. Какой бы скучной была поездка без этого изобретения.
Газеты и журналы были популярны лет 10 назад. Конечно, модные журналы все ещё наши любимые, но сегодня и они есть в интернете. Каждый может выбрать то, что подходит именно ему. А информационный мир будет развиваться с каждым днём все больше и больше.
Каждый день нас окружают всевозможные СМИ: газеты, журналы, радио, телевидение и Интернет. СМИ играют важную роль в нашей жизни. Они оповещают нас о событиях в мире, развлекают нас в любое время дня и ночи и оказывают влияние на наше мнение.
К печатным СМИ относятся газеты, книги и журналы. Они стали менее популярными в двадцатом веке из-за технического прогресса и новых изобретений.
К средствам вещания относятся, прежде всего, радио и телевидение. Это и были те новые изобретения, которые отчасти заменили книги и газеты в двадцатом столетии. Они сделали возможной более быструю передачу информации. Более того, телевидение стало невероятно популярным развлечением для всех, у кого есть дома телевизор. Существуют сотни каналов. Миллионы людей смотрят фильмы и телешоу каждый день.
В последнее время, однако, все эти виды СМИ уступили место новейшему, революционному виду связи – Интернету. Можно читать статьи из газет и книги, слушать трансляции программ и музыки, смотреть видео, в том числе онлайн-трансляции телевизионных каналов, и все это в одном месте: в Интернете. Это очень удобно. Практически все сейчас имеют доступ в Интернет на своих мобильных телефонах. Это мгновенный способ передачи информации по всему миру.
На мой взгляд, Интернет – лучшее изобретение двадцатого века. Это потрясающая вещь, которая позволяет людям использовать знания и опыт всего человеческого сообщества. Я никогда не читаю газеты и не смотрю телевизор, вместо этого я использую Интернет. Там я могу найти любую нужную мне информацию: начиная с книг по учебе и заканчивая рецептами и танцевальными видеоуроками.

Nowadays information communication is an important part of our life. It goes without saying that mass media has become an integral part of modern people’s life. People live with a constant necessity of getting new information. How can they satisfy their need? They may communicate with one another or just use the immense space of means of communication. People need information in order to keep up with the whole world around them — with vogue, new trends of life, discoveries and inventions. We live to learn news; we breathe and live with this.
Let’s concentrate on one of mass media branches — television. As we know, it appeared much later than such kinds of mass media as radio, newspapers and magazines. Nowadays almost everybody has got at least one TV-set at home. Television now plays an important role in our life. It takes a steady place in our daily timetable. However, watching television has two sides: not only advantages but also disadvantages.
On the one hand, TV keeps people informed of current events; TV gives us wonderful possibilities for education. We can choose any programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a great amount of channels which are specialized in various spheres. It can be the sphere of politics, news, sports, animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons, educational programmes, music, fashion and many others. Such channels as “History”, “Discovery”, “Animal Planet”, “365”, enrich our knowledge in different fields. There are also channels which offer to our attention some educational programmes for children and adults, for example “Happy English” — a programme focused on teaching the English language, “Memory” — a programme which offers a number of exercises for children in order to develop their memory.
The second advantage of watching television is that it gives families an opportunity to spend some time together. Nowadays adults are often too busy to give enough attention to their children. When they come home from work in the evening, so tired and exhausted, — the only possible way to relax for many is just lay on the sofa in front of TV In such situations it’s high time to choose a family comedy and see it together with your spouse and children. So, watching TV helps us to relax and forget about it all — work, worries and problems that are on our mind.
Moreover, television is a great source of entertaining. Every day there is a wide choice of films and serials on TV — detectives, dramas, comedies, action films, thrillers, horrors, cartoons and others. If you have some spare time, switch on your TV-set and see a good movie with famous and talented actors or actresses, like Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts or Dakota Fanning. Nowadays you are not limited in your choice, for even if there is no film you’d like to see in a TV-programme, you can always see it on DVD or download it in the Internet. Besides, sometimes television is the only opportunity to watch concerts of world-famous celebrities, like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears or Justin Bieber.
However, watching television has its negative side. It is well-known that television may turn to be harmful for our health. Spending too much time in front of a TV screen may affect our eyesight badly. There are many cases when children become TV-addicted. Every spare minute they try to switch the TV on. Their progress in studies suffers due to the fact that children try to do their homework as fast as they can in order to have more time for watching TV.
Moreover, nowadays some TV programmes and films include a lot of violent scenes that can have a negative influence on a child’s psychic development.
Another disadvantage of television is an enormous amount of advertising. Firstly, it makes people buy some useless or unnecessary things. Bright and beautiful ads don’t reveal any drawbacks of the products they advertise. So, it often turns out that the goods quality is far worse than expected. Secondly, many ads deal with the pearl of beauty — a very slim and tall girl. The result of it may be the fact that children become too much concentrated on their appearance, which may lead to depression or to the feeling of inferiority.
Finally, many children nowadays would rather spend a day glued to a TV-set than go outdoors to play with their peers.
Undoubtedly, we need TV, for it is one of the main and most convenient means of mass media. However, taking into account all its merits and drawbacks, we must try to organize our time in the right way so as not to become a TV slave.

Однако, как и всё в нашей жизни, телевидение имеет свои плюсы и минусы.
С одной стороны, телевидение информирует людей о текущих событиях и предоставляет великолепные возможности для обучения. Мы можем выбирать любую программу в соответствии с нашими интересами, настроением и потребностями. Существует большое количество каналов, которые освещают разные сферы нашей жизни: политика, новости, спорт, мир животных, художественные и мультипликационные фильмы, сериалы, искусство, ток-шоу, музыка, мода и многое другое. Телевидение предоставляет нам хорошую возможность для развлечения. К минусам телевидения можно отнести и чрезмерное количество рекламы. Во-первых, она заставляет людей покупать совершенно бесполезные, ненужные вещи. Яркая и красивая реклама во многих случаях служит для того, чтобы скрыть недостатки рекламируемых товаров. Во-вторых, часть рекламных роликов, в которых фигурируют очень стройные и высокие девушки, вольно или невольно призывают нас стремиться к подобным эталонам физической красоты. Это часто приводит к тому, что у ребёнка формируется неверное представление о действительности. Он начинает слишком серьёзно относиться к своей внешности, что может привести к депрессии или чувству неполноценности.
И последнее, о чём хотелось бы сказать, это то, что дети в наше время часто охотнее проведут день перед экраном телевизора, чем пойдут играть на улицу со своими сверстниками.
Несомненно, телевидение необходимо современному человеку, потому что оно является одним из важнейших средств массовой информации. Однако, принимая во внимание все его достоинства, нужно постараться организовать своё время таким образом, чтобы не стать «рабом телевизора».

Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people’s private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed?
The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.
Still, many people prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don’t react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information.
The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news time on TV.

Mass media: pros and cons
Mass media consists of printed production, television, radio and Internet. One can choose from a great variety of these sources. Mass media provides us with necessary information on things and events happening worldwide 24 hours a day. And it also helps us to spend our leisure time.
Its history begins with the first printed Chinese newspaper in 868 A.D. Europe saw its first book in 1453 when Johannes Guttenberg invented the printed press.
The influence of mass media is doubtless, but is it positive or negative? There are benefits as well as some drawbacks in this issue.
The very first benefit is information. Nowadays the information can be useful for people. It is very important for everyone because there are lots of things happening every minute in the world which can affect our professional and private life.
And it makes news accessible: just turn on the TV or look through news sites and you will be kept currently informed. Another useful purpose is education. Many people gain knowledge from the Internet and TV programs. It is an easy and affordable way to cultivate intelligence.
And what about drawbacks? As people use to say “Too much of a good thing is good for nothing”. This suits to the mass media. One shouldn`t rely on everything the newspapers say. Misrepresentations and bare- faced lie easily take place and misinform millions of people. Mass media can also manipulate the minds of the audiences as it was done in the times of theSoviet Union.
Today we witness the influence of various sources of mass media on youth. Tons of meaning lessTV- shows, glossy magazines and social networks steal young people`s time that could be spent on beneficial and healthy activities. They lose their own opinion and have nothing to say except the ideas heard from others.
To my mind we can’t imagine our lives without mass media. It is silly to avoid it as we can use its advantages.Though we should be careful and filter all information we get. I do my best to stay informed about the latest events and I’m fond of searching in the Internet.
But I don’t forget that mass media is only a part of my life and not the essential one.

А что насчёт недостатков? Люди постоянно говорят « Много будешь знать – скоро состаришься». Эта поговорка подходит к СМИ. Не следует доверять всему, что написано в газете. Искажённая информация откровенная ложь легко вводит в заблуждение миллионы людей. СМИ также может манипулировать сознанием людей, как это было сделано во времена Советского Союза. На сегодняшний момент мы является свидетелями влияния различными источниками СМИ на молодёжь. Тонны бессмысленных телевизионных шоу, глянцевых журналов, социальных сетей крадут у молодёжи время, которое могло быть потрачено на полезную деятельность. Молодёжь теряет своё собственное мнение, им нечего сказать, кроме как про то, что они услышали от других.
По моему мнению, мы не может представить нашу жизнь без СМИ. Глупо отказываться от СМИ, так как мы можем пользоваться преимуществами. Хотя мы должны быть осторожны и фильтровать информацию, которую мы получаем. Я стараюсь быть в курсе последних новостей, и мне нравится искать информацию в интернете. Но я не забываю, что интернет не является главной частью моей жизни.

The role of mass media in the modern life can hardly be overestimated. Mass media have become a necessary part of any modern society. They inform, forecast, educate, entertain and advertise. We can learn about what is happening in our country and abroad very fast using mass media. Mass media bring people together in one global community.

Every highly educated person regularly reads newspapers and magazines. They are very different and dedicated to various spheres of life: culture, society, politics, religion, fashion, automobiles, sport, medicine or household. Television gives us big opportunities, it brings world in our homes. It’s one of the richest sources of information. With the help of TV it is possible to study foreign languages, to learn a lot about discoveries and inventions, animal world, world of fashion and other amazing things. We watch TV to learn about the latest news or to have a rest.
Radio broadcasts much news and music. Some of programmes are very amusing and entertaining. Radio is widespread for its portability. It means that radios can be easily carried around. Many people like listening to the radio while having a rest on the beach or picnic, preparing meals, driving a car or walking down the street.
Books are also very important in people’s life. They influence the way people look at the world and can be people’s best friends and great teachers.

Nowadays
information communication is an important part of our life. It
goes without saying that mass media has become an integral part
of modern people’s life. People live with a constant necessity
of getting new information. How can they satisfy their need?
They may communicate with one another or just use the immense
space of means of communication. People need information in
order to keep up with the whole world around them — with vogue,
new trends of life, discoveries and inventions. We live to learn
news; we breathe and live with this.
Let’s concentrate
on one of mass media branches — television. As we know, it
appeared much later than such kinds of mass media as radio,
newspapers and magazines. Nowadays almost everybody has got at
least one TV-set at home. Television now plays an important role
in our life. It takes a steady place in our daily timetable.
However, watching television has two sides: not only advantages
but also disadvantages.
On the one hand,
TV keeps people informed of current events; TV gives us
wonderful possibilities for education. We can choose any
programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a
great amount of channels which are specialized in various
spheres. It can be the sphere of politics, news, sports,
animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons,
educational programmes, music, fashion and many others. Such
channels as “History”, “Discovery”,
“Animal
Planet”, “365”, enrich our knowledge in different fields. There
are also channels which offer to our attention some educational
programmes for children and adults, for example “Happy English”
— a programme focused on teaching the English language, “Memory”
— a programme which offers a number of exercises for children in
order to develop their memory.
The second
advantage of watching television is that it gives families an
opportunity to spend some time together. Nowadays adults are
often too busy to give enough attention to their children. When
they come home from work in the evening, so tired and exhausted,
— the only possible way to relax for many is just lay on the
sofa in front of TV In such situations it’s high time to choose
a family comedy and see it together with your spouse and
children. So, watching TV helps us to relax and forget about it
all — work, worries and problems that are on our mind.
Moreover,
television is a great source of entertaining. Every day there is
a wide choice of films and serials on TV — detectives, dramas,
comedies, action films, thrillers, horrors, cartoons and others.
If you have some spare time, switch on your TV-set and see a
good movie with famous and talented actors or actresses, like
Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts or
Dakota Fanning. Nowadays you are not limited in your choice, for
even if there is no film you’d like to see in a TV-programme,
you can always see it on DVD or download it in the Internet.
Besides, sometimes television is the only opportunity to watch
concerts of world-famous celebrities, like Michael Jackson,
Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears or Justin Bieber.
However, watching
television has its negative side. It is well-known that
television may turn to be harmful for our health. Spending too
much time in front of a TV screen may affect our eyesight badly.
There are many cases when children become TV-addicted. Every
spare minute they try to switch the TV on. Their progress in
studies suffers due to the fact that children try to do their
homework as fast as they can in order to have more time for
watching TV.
Moreover,
nowadays some TV programmes and films include a lot of violent
scenes that can have a negative influence on a child’s psychic
development.
Another
disadvantage of television is an enormous amount of advertising.
Firstly, it makes people buy some useless or unnecessary things.
Bright and beautiful ads don’t reveal any drawbacks of the
products they advertise. So, it often turns out that the goods
quality is far worse than expected. Secondly, many ads deal with
the pearl of beauty — a very slim and tall girl. The result of
it may be the fact that children become too much concentrated on
their appearance, which may lead to depression or to the feeling
of inferiority.
Finally, many
children nowadays would rather spend a day glued to a TV-set
than go outdoors to play with their peers.
Undoubtedly, we
need TV, for it is one of the main and most convenient means of
mass media. However, taking into account all its merits and
drawbacks, we must try to organize our time in the right way so

However, I believe that good reporters try to deliver us only reliable information. My favourite types of media are TV and Internet. I often watch interesting films on TV or educational channels, such as Animal Planet and National Geographic. As for Internet, it probably unites all media sources nowadays. So I can easily watch the same films or channels online. Besides, Internet is also used for mass communication, so I use it to talk to my friends. I don’t usually listen to the radio but if my parents turn it on in the car, I enjoy it. We also buy sometimes newspapers and magazines from kiosks.

Mass media or mass communications are the press, radio and television.
Every day we read newspapers and magazines, listen to radio and watch TV. Nowadays there are so many newspapers and magazines, radio stations and TV channels that we have to be very -selective and give preference to some of them.
What newspapers and magazines do I prefer to read? I like to read the following newspapers: “Komsomol skava Pravda” (“Komsomol Truth”), “Nezavisimost” (“Independence”), “Argumenty i Fakty’ (“Arguments and Facts”).
Several periodicals are available in English. As far as newspapers are concerned they may be daily, or weekly. Magazines may be weekly, monthly and quarterly.
The newspapers and magazines I read are the most readable and have a large readership or circulation. For example, “Argumenty i Fakty” has a circulation of more than 23 000 000. It is the largest in the world. The newspapers contain and give coverage of local, home and foreign affairs. Their publications deal with very burning problems of our. history, latest events and forecasts for future. They also touch upon cultural, sport news. I like the way they present different points of view, approaches to the problems. My parents and I subscribe to some periodicals, so we are subscribers. We buy some of newspapers and magazines in a kiosk.
I often listen to radio, especially in the morning before I leave for school. I prefer to listen to “Mayak” (“Lighthouse”) program. They broadcast much news and music. I like to listen to weekend programs, some of them are very amusing and entertaining.
As to the TV, we have 4 channels. I prefer to watch youth programs.
In addition I like to see interesting films. They might be feature, adventure, scientific, horror, cartoon and other films. I enjoy seeing Walt Disney’s cartoons. Now and then I like to see the program “Love at First Sight”. It is an enjoyable and entertaining one.

И если мы обсуждаем средства массовой информации, то мы можем выделить радио, газеты и журналы, телевидение и интернет. Фактически, все, что помогает людям по всему миру общаться и делиться информацией, мы можем отнести к СМИ.
Я думаю, СМИ имеет огромную силу. Любая информация влияет на людей очень сильно. Иногда мы даже не представляем, но средства массовой информации может принести нам много пользы и вреда.
Суть заключается в том, что СМИ может доносить до нас верную и ложную информацию. Мы смотрим телевизор каждый день, слушаем радио и читаем газеты. Самое важное нужно понять, что информация не всегда бывает достоверной. И прежде, чем поверить в какую-то рекламу, подумайте заранее, ведь вокруг много разных мнений и комментариев.
Моим любимым средством является интернет. Вообще-то я считаю, что интернет стал самым популярным СМИ во всем мире. Все подростки и взрослые сегодня следят за новостями в интернете. Это очень удобно и есть доступ 24/7. Тут вы сможете найти любую информацию по всему миру, проследить за экстренными выпусками и много чего ещё.
ТВ сегодня становится менее популярным, я считаю. Многие люди выбирают жизнь без ТВ. Интернет заменяет ТВ. Я этому не удивлена, потому что даже я не интересуюсь ТВ больше.
Радио люди слушают, когда находятся за рулем. Я считаю, радио было изобретено именно для этого. Какой бы скучной была поездка без этого изобретения.
Газеты и журналы были популярны лет 10 назад. Конечно, модные журналы все ещё наши любимые, но сегодня и они есть в интернете. Каждый может выбрать то, что подходит именно ему. А информационный мир будет развиваться с каждым днём все больше и больше.
Каждый день нас окружают всевозможные СМИ: газеты, журналы, радио, телевидение и Интернет. СМИ играют важную роль в нашей жизни. Они оповещают нас о событиях в мире, развлекают нас в любое время дня и ночи и оказывают влияние на наше мнение.
К печатным СМИ относятся газеты, книги и журналы. Они стали менее популярными в двадцатом веке из-за технического прогресса и новых изобретений.
К средствам вещания относятся, прежде всего, радио и телевидение. Это и были те новые изобретения, которые отчасти заменили книги и газеты в двадцатом столетии. Они сделали возможной более быструю передачу информации. Более того, телевидение стало невероятно популярным развлечением для всех, у кого есть дома телевизор. Существуют сотни каналов. Миллионы людей смотрят фильмы и телешоу каждый день.
В последнее время, однако, все эти виды СМИ уступили место новейшему, революционному виду связи – Интернету. Можно читать статьи из газет и книги, слушать трансляции программ и музыки, смотреть видео, в том числе онлайн-трансляции телевизионных каналов, и все это в одном месте: в Интернете. Это очень удобно. Практически все сейчас имеют доступ в Интернет на своих мобильных телефонах. Это мгновенный способ передачи информации по всему миру.
На мой взгляд, Интернет – лучшее изобретение двадцатого века. Это потрясающая вещь, которая позволяет людям использовать знания и опыт всего человеческого сообщества. Я никогда не читаю газеты и не смотрю телевизор, вместо этого я использую Интернет. Там я могу найти любую нужную мне информацию: начиная с книг по учебе и заканчивая рецептами и танцевальными видеоуроками.

Nowadays information communication is an important part of our life. It goes without saying that mass media has become an integral part of modern people’s life. People live with a constant necessity of getting new information. How can they satisfy their need? They may communicate with one another or just use the immense space of means of communication. People need information in order to keep up with the whole world around them — with vogue, new trends of life, discoveries and inventions. We live to learn news; we breathe and live with this.
Let’s concentrate on one of mass media branches — television. As we know, it appeared much later than such kinds of mass media as radio, newspapers and magazines. Nowadays almost everybody has got at least one TV-set at home. Television now plays an important role in our life. It takes a steady place in our daily timetable. However, watching television has two sides: not only advantages but also disadvantages.
On the one hand, TV keeps people informed of current events; TV gives us wonderful possibilities for education. We can choose any programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a great amount of channels which are specialized in various spheres. It can be the sphere of politics, news, sports, animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons, educational programmes, music, fashion and many others. Such channels as “History”, “Discovery”, “Animal Planet”, “365”, enrich our knowledge in different fields. There are also channels which offer to our attention some educational programmes for children and adults, for example “Happy English” — a programme focused on teaching the English language, “Memory” — a programme which offers a number of exercises for children in order to develop their memory.
The second advantage of watching television is that it gives families an opportunity to spend some time together. Nowadays adults are often too busy to give enough attention to their children. When they come home from work in the evening, so tired and exhausted, — the only possible way to relax for many is just lay on the sofa in front of TV In such situations it’s high time to choose a family comedy and see it together with your spouse and children. So, watching TV helps us to relax and forget about it all — work, worries and problems that are on our mind.
Moreover, television is a great source of entertaining. Every day there is a wide choice of films and serials on TV — detectives, dramas, comedies, action films, thrillers, horrors, cartoons and others. If you have some spare time, switch on your TV-set and see a good movie with famous and talented actors or actresses, like Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts or Dakota Fanning. Nowadays you are not limited in your choice, for even if there is no film you’d like to see in a TV-programme, you can always see it on DVD or download it in the Internet. Besides, sometimes television is the only opportunity to watch concerts of world-famous celebrities, like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears or Justin Bieber.
However, watching television has its negative side. It is well-known that television may turn to be harmful for our health. Spending too much time in front of a TV screen may affect our eyesight badly. There are many cases when children become TV-addicted. Every spare minute they try to switch the TV on. Their progress in studies suffers due to the fact that children try to do their homework as fast as they can in order to have more time for watching TV.
Moreover, nowadays some TV programmes and films include a lot of violent scenes that can have a negative influence on a child’s psychic development.
Another disadvantage of television is an enormous amount of advertising. Firstly, it makes people buy some useless or unnecessary things. Bright and beautiful ads don’t reveal any drawbacks of the products they advertise. So, it often turns out that the goods quality is far worse than expected. Secondly, many ads deal with the pearl of beauty — a very slim and tall girl. The result of it may be the fact that children become too much concentrated on their appearance, which may lead to depression or to the feeling of inferiority.
Finally, many children nowadays would rather spend a day glued to a TV-set than go outdoors to play with their peers.
Undoubtedly, we need TV, for it is one of the main and most convenient means of mass media. However, taking into account all its merits and drawbacks, we must try to organize our time in the right way so as not to become a TV slave.

Во-вторых, часть рекламных роликов, в которых фигурируют очень стройные и высокие девушки, вольно или невольно призывают нас стремиться к подобным эталонам физической красоты. Это часто приводит к тому, что у ребёнка формируется неверное представление о действительности. Он начинает слишком серьёзно относиться к своей внешности, что может привести к депрессии или чувству неполноценности.
И последнее, о чём хотелось бы сказать, это то, что дети в наше время часто охотнее проведут день перед экраном телевизора, чем пойдут играть на улицу со своими сверстниками.
Несомненно, телевидение необходимо современному человеку, потому что оно является одним из важнейших средств массовой информации. Однако, принимая во внимание все его достоинства, нужно постараться организовать своё время таким образом, чтобы не стать «рабом телевизора».

Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people’s private lives. They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which are untrue or half-true. They take photos of them in their most intimate moments. The question is — should this be allowed?
The main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything with their own eyes. And that’s an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the pages of newspapers.
Still, many people prefer the radio. It’s good to listen to in the car, or in the open air, or when you do something about the house.
Newspapers don’t react to events as quickly as TV, but they usually provide us with extra detail, comment and background information.
The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news time on TV.

Mass media: pros and cons
Mass media consists of printed production, television, radio and Internet. One can choose from a great variety of these sources. Mass media provides us with necessary information on things and events happening worldwide 24 hours a day. And it also helps us to spend our leisure time.
Its history begins with the first printed Chinese newspaper in 868 A.D. Europe saw its first book in 1453 when Johannes Guttenberg invented the printed press.
The influence of mass media is doubtless, but is it positive or negative? There are benefits as well as some drawbacks in this issue.
The very first benefit is information. Nowadays the information can be useful for people. It is very important for everyone because there are lots of things happening every minute in the world which can affect our professional and private life.
And it makes news accessible: just turn on the TV or look through news sites and you will be kept currently informed. Another useful purpose is education. Many people gain knowledge from the Internet and TV programs. It is an easy and affordable way to cultivate intelligence.
And what about drawbacks? As people use to say “Too much of a good thing is good for nothing”. This suits to the mass media. One shouldn`t rely on everything the newspapers say. Misrepresentations and bare- faced lie easily take place and misinform millions of people. Mass media can also manipulate the minds of the audiences as it was done in the times of theSoviet Union.
Today we witness the influence of various sources of mass media on youth. Tons of meaning lessTV- shows, glossy magazines and social networks steal young people`s time that could be spent on beneficial and healthy activities. They lose their own opinion and have nothing to say except the ideas heard from others.
To my mind we can’t imagine our lives without mass media. It is silly to avoid it as we can use its advantages.Though we should be careful and filter all information we get. I do my best to stay informed about the latest events and I’m fond of searching in the Internet.
But I don’t forget that mass media is only a part of my life and not the essential one.

А что насчёт недостатков? Люди постоянно говорят « Много будешь знать – скоро состаришься». Эта поговорка подходит к СМИ. Не следует доверять всему, что написано в газете. Искажённая информация откровенная ложь легко вводит в заблуждение миллионы людей. СМИ также может манипулировать сознанием людей, как это было сделано во времена Советского Союза. На сегодняшний момент мы является свидетелями влияния различными источниками СМИ на молодёжь. Тонны бессмысленных телевизионных шоу, глянцевых журналов, социальных сетей крадут у молодёжи время, которое могло быть потрачено на полезную деятельность. Молодёжь теряет своё собственное мнение, им нечего сказать, кроме как про то, что они услышали от других.
По моему мнению, мы не может представить нашу жизнь без СМИ. Глупо отказываться от СМИ, так как мы можем пользоваться преимуществами. Хотя мы должны быть осторожны и фильтровать информацию, которую мы получаем. Я стараюсь быть в курсе последних новостей, и мне нравится искать информацию в интернете. Но я не забываю, что интернет не является главной частью моей жизни.

The role of mass media in the modern life can hardly be overestimated. Mass media have become a necessary part of any modern society. They inform, forecast, educate, entertain and advertise. We can learn about what is happening in our country and abroad very fast using mass media. Mass media bring people together in one global community.
Mass media include television, radio, books, newspapers, magazines and Internet. During the day we use them in our work or just for pleasure.
Every highly educated person regularly reads newspapers and magazines. Newspapers publish articles which cover the latest international and national events, give a full coverage of financial, commercial and public affairs. They are very different and dedicated to various spheres of life: culture, society, politics, religion, fashion, automobiles, sport, medicine or household. A lot of them are specialized and help people to be up-to-date with the latest news, events and achievements in different spheres.
Television gives us big opportunities, it brings world in our homes. It’s one of the richest sources of information. With the help of TV it is possible to study foreign languages, to learn a lot about discoveries and inventions, animal world, world of fashion and other amazing things. We watch TV to learn about the latest news or to have a rest.
Radio broadcasts much news and music. Some of programmes are very amusing and entertaining. Radio is widespread for its portability. It means that radios can be easily carried around. Many people like listening to the radio while having a rest on the beach or picnic, preparing meals, driving a car or walking down the street.
Books are also very important in people’s life. They influence the way people look at the world and can be people’s best friends and great teachers.
So, today mass media offer us a great variety to choose from. Nowadays there are so many newspapers and magazines, TV-channels and radio stations that people have to be very selective and give preference to some of them. Nowadays
information communication is an important part of our life. It
goes without saying that mass media has become an integral part
of modern people’s life. People live with a constant necessity
of getting new information. How can they satisfy their need?
They may communicate with one another or just use the immense
space of means of communication. People need information in
order to keep up with the whole world around them — with vogue,
new trends of life, discoveries and inventions. We live to learn
news; we breathe and live with this.
Let’s concentrate
on one of mass media branches — television. As we know, it
appeared much later than such kinds of mass media as radio,
newspapers and magazines. Nowadays almost everybody has got at
least one TV-set at home. Television now plays an important role
in our life. It takes a steady place in our daily timetable.
However, watching television has two sides: not only advantages
but also disadvantages.
On the one hand,
TV keeps people informed of current events; TV gives us
wonderful possibilities for education. We can choose any
programme according to our interests, mood and needs. There is a
great amount of channels which are specialized in various
spheres. It can be the sphere of politics, news, sports,
animals, feature films, soap operas, art, talk-shows, cartoons,
educational programmes, music, fashion and many others. Such
channels as “History”, “Discovery”,
“Animal
Planet”, “365”, enrich our knowledge in different fields. There
are also channels which offer to our attention some educational
programmes for children and adults, for example “Happy English”
— a programme focused on teaching the English language, “Memory”
— a programme which offers a number of exercises for children in
order to develop their memory.
The second
advantage of watching television is that it gives families an
opportunity to spend some time together. Nowadays adults are
often too busy to give enough attention to their children. When
they come home from work in the evening, so tired and exhausted,
— the only possible way to relax for many is just lay on the
sofa in front of TV In such situations it’s high time to choose
a family comedy and see it together with your spouse and
children. So, watching TV helps us to relax and forget about it
all — work, worries and problems that are on our mind.
Moreover,
television is a great source of entertaining. Every day there is
a wide choice of films and serials on TV — detectives, dramas,
comedies, action films, thrillers, horrors, cartoons and others.
If you have some spare time, switch on your TV-set and see a
good movie with famous and talented actors or actresses, like
Johnny Depp, Robert De Niro, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts or
Dakota Fanning. Nowadays you are not limited in your choice, for
even if there is no film you’d like to see in a TV-programme,
you can always see it on DVD or download it in the Internet.
Besides, sometimes television is the only opportunity to watch
concerts of world-famous celebrities, like Michael Jackson,
Madonna, Pink, Britney Spears or Justin Bieber.
However, watching
television has its negative side. It is well-known that
television may turn to be harmful for our health. Spending too
much time in front of a TV screen may affect our eyesight badly.
There are many cases when children become TV-addicted. Every
spare minute they try to switch the TV on. Their progress in
studies suffers due to the fact that children try to do their
homework as fast as they can in order to have more time for
watching TV.
Moreover,
nowadays some TV programmes and films include a lot of violent
scenes that can have a negative influence on a child’s psychic
development.
Another
disadvantage of television is an enormous amount of advertising.
Firstly, it makes people buy some useless or unnecessary things.
Bright and beautiful ads don’t reveal any drawbacks of the
products they advertise. So, it often turns out that the goods
quality is far worse than expected. Secondly, many ads deal with
the pearl of beauty — a very slim and tall girl. The result of
it may be the fact that children become too much concentrated on
their appearance, which may lead to depression or to the feeling
of inferiority.
Finally, many
children nowadays would rather spend a day glued to a TV-set
than go outdoors to play with their peers.
Undoubtedly, we
need TV, for it is one of the main and most convenient means of
mass media. However, taking into account all its merits and
drawbacks, we must try to organize our time in the right way so
as not to become a TV slave.

Despite today’s abundance and variety of mass media, not everything can be ranked as such. Thus, for example, libraries or press conferences cannot be attributed to mass media.
Features of mass media
There are 3 main features which characterize mass media. First of all, they must be periodic. Second, they are always aimed at a large audience. Third, there must be a speaker or any other source of information.
Press
Press is considered to be a classic form of mass media. It includes newspapers, magazines, brochures and all other printed publications issued with a specific periodicity. Unfortunately, with the development of Internet and other means of media, press is experiencing difficult times.
Electronic mass media
This category includes radio, television and Internet. Radio is a popular means of media, especially when travelling or driving. Television is, without any doubt, the most effective one with the biggest audience of all. Nowadays, with Internet playing a significant part in our life, mass media is gradually moving into virtual space.

It is difficult to overestimate the role of mass media in our life. Media influence people’s consciousness, creating a certain public opinion. Mass media is a broad concept. It includes radio, television, newspapers, magazines, Internet and else. It’s hard to imagine life without mass media nowadays. Media plays very important part in everyday life. It informs us about current affairs in the world. It educates us, gives a possibility to learn something new. It certainly entertains us in different ways. Mass media influences the way people dress, eat, communicate and many other parts of our lives. It can often make people change their views on different matters. Millions of people watch TV every day, listen to the radio in cars, read newspaper and magazines. Everyone finds something interesting through means of media. Of course, not all that we see, hear or read is objective. Sometimes the information can be altered. However, I believe that good reporters try to deliver us only reliable information. My favourite types of media are TV and Internet. I often watch interesting films on TV or educational channels, such as Animal Planet and National Geographic. As for Internet, it probably unites all media sources nowadays. So I can easily watch the same films or channels online. Besides, Internet is also used for mass communication, so I use it to talk to my friends. I don’t usually listen to the radio but if my parents turn it on in the car, I enjoy it. We also buy sometimes newspapers and magazines from kiosks.

Они, конечно же, служат развлечением различными способами. Средства массовой информации оказывают влияние на то, как люди одеваются, кушают, общаются, и на многие другие сферы нашей жизни. Они часто могут заставить людей изменить свои взгляды на разные вещи. Миллионы людей смотрят телевизор каждый день, слушают радио в машинах, читают газеты и журналы. Однако я верю, что хорошие репортеры стараются донести до нас достоверную информацию. Мои любимые средства массовой информации это телевидение и Интернет. Что касается Интернета, то он, скорее всего, соединяет все информационные ресурсы на сегодняшний день. Поэтому, я могу с легкостью смотреть все те же фильмы и каналы в онлайн режиме. Кроме этого, Интернет также используется как массовый коммуникатор, и я использую его, чтобы общаться со своими друзьями. Mass media or mass communications are the press, radio and television.
Every day we read newspapers and magazines, listen to radio and watch TV. Nowadays there are so many newspapers and magazines, radio stations and TV channels that we have to be very -selective and give preference to some of them.
What newspapers and magazines do I prefer to read? I like to read the following newspapers: “Komsomol skava Pravda” (“Komsomol Truth”), “Nezavisimost” (“Independence”), “Argumenty i Fakty’ (“Arguments and Facts”).
Several periodicals are available in English. As far as newspapers are concerned they may be daily, or weekly. Magazines may be weekly, monthly and quarterly.
The newspapers and magazines I read are the most readable and have a large readership or circulation. For example, “Argumenty i Fakty” has a circulation of more than 23 000 000. It is the largest in the world. The newspapers contain and give coverage of local, home and foreign affairs. Their publications deal with very burning problems of our. history, latest events and forecasts for future. They also touch upon cultural, sport news. I like the way they present different points of view, approaches to the problems. My parents and I subscribe to some periodicals, so we are subscribers. We buy some of newspapers and magazines in a kiosk.
I often listen to radio, especially in the morning before I leave for school. I prefer to listen to “Mayak” (“Lighthouse”) program. They broadcast much news and music. I like to listen to weekend programs, some of them are very amusing and entertaining.
As to the TV, we have 4 channels. I prefer to watch youth programs.
In addition I like to see interesting films. They might be feature, adventure, scientific, horror, cartoon and other films. I enjoy seeing Walt Disney’s cartoons. Now and then I like to see the program “Love at First Sight”. It is an enjoyable and entertaining one.
