New York City, which is situated in New York State, is the
biggest city of the USA. It is also called The Big Apple. In the
19th century it was very dirty with chickens walking along
streets and avenues. When immigrants began to arrive, New York
started to grow fast. Trains, railways, bridges, steamboats and
skyscrapers appeared. The first skyscraper was built in 1888. It
had only thirteen floors, but the next one had twenty-two. The
Empire State Building has 102 floors. Now New York is an

Manhattan is the heart of New York. It is the centre of American
finance, art, theatre, fashion, shopping, etc. Manhattan is
divided into two sides: the West Side and the East Side. There

The Wall Street is one of the most famous streets in New York.

situated there.
Chinatown is another tourist attraction of New York. It has a

It was not until the end of the 18th century that the city’s real growth began. Situated as it is at the mouth of the Hudson River, which is open to ocean-going ships the year round, New York quickly became one of the largest ports in the world.
At the turn of the twentieth century millions of people driven by poverty emigrated to the United States from various countries, of Europe. They entered the New World through New York, the «Gateway of America.»

There are a great number of places to visit in the city, but one of the most famous sights is the Statue of Liberty. People from all over the world want to take a photo with this giant sculpture of a woman, who is the national symbol of freedom. Another famous sight is the Broadway Street. Nobody misses it when visiting the city. It’s situated in Manhattan and houses lots of banks and other commercial organizations. There are also lots of entertaining and spectacular facilities which turned the Broadway into the symbol of entertainment industry.
One of the architectural wonders of New York is a famous Brooklyn Bridge, which crosses the East River strait. The length of the bridge is 1825 meters and it connects Manhattan with Brooklyn. Other interesting architectures in the Big Apple are the skyscrapers: Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Tourists also like the Rockefeller Center and the Woolworth Building. Art lovers will find many interesting museums in New York, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, American Museum of Natural History and many others. All in all, New York is a special city, which can offer its visitors thousands of attractions.

New York is one of the largest cities in the world. Its population is over 11 million people. New York is an industrial and cultural centre of the country. Most business is centred in Manhattan Island.
The whole area is very small, that’s why the sky-scrapers were invented in New York and, especially, in Wall Street. Wall Street is a narrow street with big houses, but it is well known all over the world as the busiest street in the USA. People do business there.
There are two more world-famous streets — Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is the centre of the theatres and night life. It is known as “The Great White Way” because of the electric signs which turn night into day.
It is the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and sub-way run all night. There are many drugstores and restaurants which never close their doors. There are cinemas with films that start at midnight. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club avenue.
New York is the largest port in America. More than half the trade of the United States goes through this city.
There are many places of interest in New York. They are: the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others.
When you come to New York you see lots of cars, big and small, black and yellow, old and modem; you do not see any trees or flowers in the streets, but only cars.
You’ll see and hear advertisements everywhere. There is no getting away from them. Advertisements fill the newspapers and cover the walls, they are on menu-cards and match-boxes, they are shouted through loud speakers and shown in the cinemas.

There is a famous crossing Times Square. It famous for Theatre district, there are more than thirty theaters there, and every evening they play their plays. Central Park is also there. There you can see people walking their dogs, having a rest or playing games.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great collection from all over the world. It’s located in Central Park. There are a lot of famous neighborhoods on Manhattan. The Village is famous for some poets and writers, who wrote about it. SoHo is an enclave of artists. Harlem has a priceless musical heritage. And the China Town with its main street – Canal.
Most of New York’s skyscrapers are located on the island of Manhattan. There are such buildings as Art Deco Chrysler Building and there were twin towers of the World Trade Center. One of the famous building in the world is the Statue of Liberty. It was built in 1886. It was a present from the people of France. About 12 million immigrants passed through New York when they came to America. When you come to New York by sea the first thing, which you will see it is the Statue of Liberty, America’s symbol of freedom!
