We live in the era of high technologies, and we use modern inventions in our everyday life because they have brought us much comfort. New technologies have spread on every field over the past 15 years. Moreover, they are rapidly changing. For example, video-recorders, DVD-players or compact disks have already become obsolete and have been replaced by more up-to-date devices. Today we can hardly imagine our life without such modern mobile devices as cell phones or laptops. Our offices are fully equipped with computers, printers, scanners, air-conditioners, interactive whiteboards and wi-fi modems. Household appliances (vacuum-cleaners, coffee-machines, dish-washers, food processors and others) help us to save our time and energy.
However, we should realize that digital and electronic inventions have both negative and positive impact on our daily life.
I am absolutely positive that new technologies or gadgets are making things faster, easier, more comfortable and interesting. For instance, if you install a GPS (Global Positioning System) in your car you’ll never get lost again. And could we imagine just 15 years ago all the things we can do on the wireless Internet nowadays: connecting with friends from all over the world, online shopping and banking, distance online learning, finding virtual relationships and even working from home? Isn’t that awesome?! Our parents used to go to post-offices to send letters or pay bills, they went to libraries to find a good book and they used telephone-booths for phone-calls.
On the other hand, I know some people who are strongly against some modern inventions because they really miss those days when they talked to each other face to face in reality, and not virtually. I partially agree with that as I really believe that people are becoming anti-social and too dependent on their gadgets. Some of my friends also spend half of the time occupying their shiny gadgets (smart-phones or i-pads) even when we go out together. Besides, people who use various social networks a lot (such as Facebook or Instagram) should worry more about their privacy.
Summing up, I could say that there are serious arguments both for and against the use of new technologies but anyway it’s really difficult to imagine our life without them today.

Мы живем в эпоху высоких технологий и пользуемся современными изобретениями в повседневной жизни, поскольку они принесли нам много комфорта. Новые технологии распространились в каждой области за последние 15 лет. Более того, они стремительно меняются. Например, видеомагнитофоны, DVD-плееры или компакт-диски стали уже устаревшими, и им на смену пришли более современные устройства. Сегодня мы с трудом можем представить нашу жизнь без таких современных мобильных приборов, как сотовые телефоны или ноутбуки. Наши офисы полностью оборудованы компьютерами, принтерами, сканерами, кондиционерами, интерактивными досками и wi-fi модемами. Бытовые приборы (пылесосы, кофе-машины, посудомоечные машины, кухонные комбайны и другие) помогают нам экономить время и энергию.
Однако, нам следует понимать, что цифровые и электронные изобретения имеют как отрицательное, так и положительное влияние на нашу повседневную жизнь.
Я полностью согласен с тем, что новые технологии или гаджеты делают многие вещи быстрее, легче, удобнее и интереснее. К примеру, если вы устанавливаете в своем автомобиле GPS (Глобальную Навигационную Систему), вы больше никогда не заблудитесь. А могли ли мы представить всего лишь 15 лет назад все то, что можем делать сегодня по беспроводному интернету: связь с друзьями по всему миру, онлайн покупки и банковские операции, дистанционное онлайн обучение, поиск виртуальных знакомств и даже работу из дома? Разве это не здорово?! Наши родители раньше отправлялись в почтовое отделение для того, чтобы отсылать письма или оплачивать счета, они ходили в библиотеки для того, чтобы найти хорошую книгу и пользовались телефонными будками для того, чтобы позвонить.
С другой стороны, я знаю людей, которые категорически против некоторых современных изобретений, так как им очень не хватает тех дней, когда они общались друг с другом, лицом к лицу в реальности, а не виртуально. Частично я согласен с этим, потому что я считаю, что люди становятся анти-социальными и слишком зависимыми от своих гаджетов. Некоторые мои друзья также посвящают половину времени своим блестящим гаджетам (смартфонам или ай-пэдам), даже когда мы выходим вместе погулять. В заключение, я считаю, что, несмотря на все имеющиеся недостатки, достоинства гаджетов намного более занчительны, так как они экономят время и позволяют людям наслаждаться жизнью!

Although many people blame technology for destroying nature and causing pollution, and say that it is the worst evil in the world , I still believe that it has greatly changed our lives for the better as we hardly imagine what would happen if we went for a day without technology.
Technology is very popular in our daily life thanks to its advantages. As we know, firstly, technology in household helps people do the housework. For example, housewives do not need to wash manually, but they can use washing machine.
Another reason why I advocate the viewpoint that technology has made the world a better place to live is that it makes the world smaller. Nowadays people can travel faster and easier to other places by car, bus and air-plane, and see many new interesting things around the world. In addition, they communicate with people in different countries through the Internet and phones, which saves them lots of time and money.
But the most worthwhile benefit technology has brought to us is that it makes us healthier and happier. Clear progress in medicine, use new technologies to diagnose and combat diseases make therapy more effective. It allows us to cure serious diseases such as cancer and cardiopathy. Statistics show that life expectancy is getting longer. In Europe, for example, today life expectancy has climbed past 80 and people are glad to be alive; the longer they live in good health, the happier they feel they are.
So, as we go forward into this ‘magical future’, will technology make the world a better place to live? Experts say it will!

These devices have become an important part of our life. Moreover, almost every day either a new technology is being invented or an old one is being improved. To stay up-to-date people keep buying newer items. Soon our houses and work places will look like electronic stores. Technology is all around us. First of all, we need it for work.
All modern offices are equipped with computers, scanners, printers, and other useful machines. One of the most important devices today is the wi-fi modem as it provides Internet. Secondly, technologies surround us at home, in cars and everywhere.
There are many people who are against new technologies. In my opinion, technological progress has made our lives more interesting and bright. Thanks to computers and Internet I find more educational resources. Such electronic items as vacuum-cleaner, washing machine, microwave, dish washer, blender and some others have made my mum’s life easier. So I’m sure that new technologies are for good. In conclusion, I’d like to say, that technological progress continues and it moves rather fast. Thus, I think that soon we will live in ‘smart’ houses with robots doing all housework instead of us. Firstly, all modern inventions facilitate human life. People learn new information thanks to TV and the computer. The washing machine, the dishwasher, the microwave oven, the vacuum cleaner… All these subjects give a person more free time. Secondly, the Internet, for example, helps people not only to get necessary information but also communicate with relatives, friends, colleagues, and partners even without leaving the house. There is Skype or e-mail using which you can solve most problems very quickly. Thirdly, modern technology can save us from getting bored by various interesting programs on TV or fascinating computer games.
But there is another point of view. Some people are sure that modern inventions make us lazy, and we don’t want to go outside or meet with friends. Besides, some people also think that technology influences man’s health, his physical and psychological condition.
I don’t agree to that point of view. People meet and walk with their friends when it is possible, but in our times life has become very fast and the Internet helps to accelerate the solution of insignificant problems. Moreover, you shouldn’t use the electric equipment all day long if you are afraid to suffer from it.
On the whole, I would like to say that I am for technology as it helps to make our life easier and brighter, and you can spend more time on other pleasant things and enjoy life. Don’t you agree with me?

Technology has penetrated every aspect of our lives, changing how we work, how we learn, how we live. We use computers at work and in the home. Nowadays we can’t do without mobile phones, PCs, digital tape recorders, laptops, fax machines and air conditioners.
All these gadgets facilitate our lives and save our time. We communicate through mobile phones, SMS messages and various social networks. Mobile phones enable us to stay in touch and to be reachable everywhere, they give us the freedom of movement. The Internet is a great source of information for people. Many people can find a job through the Internet. In addition, the widespread use of Internet has brought about profound changes to political, economic and cultural arenas. Social networks bring together users of different ages and professions.
Also, some people believe that internet dating may help find love. But I doubt it. Technology, doubtlessly, simplifies life. On the other hand, technological progress has brought many negative effects to our lives. For example, some scientists say that social networks are halting our emotional development. Some cars have negative effects on the environment, such as pollution. Unfortunately, people can use technology to create weapons of massive destruction. But I think that the future of the planet is in our hands. Therefore, people should use technology wisely in benefit to their lives.

It is undoubtedly helpful to have smart appliances in the house. They help to deal with household chores. The 21 century has begun. But our life, however, does not seem to have changed in comparacement with the 20 century. We are not living on Mars or exploring new galaxies though many writers of the 20 century predicted that. We are still cooking our meal ourselves instead of using the help of robots and spend hours travelling from one place to another though according to the predictions we were supposed to do this in several seconds. It seems – no. But let us look on some examples. Who could imagine the role of the computers in the modern world even 30 years ago? Sci-fi writers told us about the probable usage of the computers in science but, I believe, nobody really thought that a computer would become an absolutely necessary thing in our everyday life-a workspace and an entertainer in one thing. And what about the revolution in communications which has been happening for the last 10 years? I mean the mobile phones and the Internet. It seems it was quite recently when a telephone at home was the only way to talk with somebody far away from you and still many people preferred to write letters and then the waiting for the response could last for months sometimes. Now everything is quite different. You can get in touch with your friend from nearly any place of the Earth with the help of the mobile phone and the response on your letter arrives the next second it was sent. And these are the most obvious changes which influenced our lives. I do not mention the latest researches in biology such as the decoding of human genome which was finished in the very beginning if the 21 century or in chemistry and physics which led to the opening of a new frontier-nanotechnologies. We do not pay attention to these facts-but probably just because they have not influenced our life yet.
However, this does not mean that there would be no influence. The possible results, for example, on medicine are fascinating. And, well, it is difficult to predict what will happen in the future-technologies are improving all the time and I would not be surprised if in 10 years` time things that now we cannot imagine would become common and familiar.
Still, we should not forget about the problems that were left to us by the 20 century. The ecological situation is rather serious and globalization has led to some cultural misunderstandings between different nations. However, these problems can be solved if all the humankind would not only realize the importance of these problems but would do something about it as well.
To sum it up, we have lot things to do in the 21 century-from learning todeal with each other to exploring new scientific frontiers. So, what waits for us in the 21 century? Well, that depends on us!

Кажется, что совсем недавно домашниий телефон был единственны средством чтобы поговорить с кем-нибудь далеко от вас, и все-таки многие предпочитали писать письма и потом ожидание ответа могло затягиваться на месяца. Теперь все изменилось. Можно связаться с приятелем по мобильному телефону практически из любой точки Земли, а ответ на ваше письмо приходит на следующую секунду после того, как ответ был отправлен. И это самые очевидные изменения, повлиявшие на нашу жизнь. Я не говорю о последних исследованиях в биологии, таких как расшифровка человеческого генома, законченная в самом начале 21 века или в химии и физике, которые привели к открытию новой области исследований-нанотехнологий. Мы не обращаем на это внимания, но, возможно, только потому, что это пока еще не повлияло на нашу жизнь.
Впрочем, это не означает, что влияния не будет. Возможныедостижения, например, в области медицины многообещающи. И на самом деле достаточно сложно предсказывать, что произойдет в будущем-технологии постоянно совершенствуются и я не удивлюсь, если через 10 лет то, что сейчас мы не можем даже и представить, станет чем-то обыденным.
Однако мы не должны забывать и о проблемах, оставленных нам 20 веком. Ситуация с экологией представляется весьма серьезной, а глобализация привела к некоторым межкультурным противоречиям между разными нациями. Впрочем, эти проблемы могут быть разрешены, если человечество не только осознает важность этих проблем, но и предпримет действия по их разрешению.
В общем, нам многое предстоит сделать в 21 веке – начиная с того, чтобы научиться приходить к взаимопониманию и кончая исследованиями новых областей науки. Так что же нас ждет в 21 веке? Это зависит только от нас!

changes and new additions to the language but the telecommunications
revolution of the last few years has caused some of the quickest and the
most widespread changes yet seen.
New words as webcam, spam,
chat, cyberspace, dotcom and others are entering the language all the
time to put a name to things that haven’t existed before.
Our students have prepared
their presentations about some new words and their origin. The material
has been taken from the BBC learning English site. Hole-in-the-wall
Hole-in-the-wall is one of those
phrases where you get a lot of words hyphenated, if you wrote it down:
hole-in-the-wall, being used as a single word, as a noun. “‘I’m going to
the hole-in-the-wall”‘ you might say or “‘I’m getting some money out of
the hole-in-the-wall”‘. Well you can see what it means, it means an
automatic cash dispenser – one of those installed in the outside wall of
a bank or some other money-giving organization. It’s British colloquial;
it’s not used as far as I know in the States, or in Australia, or
anywhere, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it spread a little bit –
always written with hyphens. Very unusual to see phrases of this kind
and sentences being used in this way, as single words. But if you listen
out for them, you’ll find them – especially being used as adjectives.
Have you heard people for instance say “‘he’s a very
get-up-and-go-person”‘? Now there’s the sentence ‘get up and go’. To say
a “‘get-up-and-go-person”‘ means somebody who’s got lots of enthusiasm. Wi-fi

and then, suddenly it came back in again with this internet connection.
It’s used now for all sorts of

phones are sometimes referred to as wireless, and GPS (Global
Positioning System- a system that uses radio signals from satellites to
show you exact position on the Earth on a special piece of equipment.),
you know, satellite things in your car – wireless.
Wi-fi is just one word of many
that has come into usage in the last few years, talking about the way in
which we cope with the Internet. Blog
In 2001 the word blog didn’t
exist in the language yet. How fast the internet moves! Those who blog,
bloggers, carry out the activity of blogging, setting up a blog site,
with a unique web address in order to do so. It’s an abbreviation of
‘web log’; a phrase that was first used in 1997, both as a noun and as a
verb, a web log. It’s a genre, a it’s bit like diary writing, or
bulletin posting. People add their posts or diary entries, with some
regularity, if you’re a blogger you do it daily at least, often several

On the other hand, I know some people who are strongly against some modern inventions because they really miss those days when they talked to each other face to face in reality, and not virtually. I partially agree with that as I really believe that people are becoming anti-social and too dependent on their gadgets. Some of my friends also spend half of the time occupying their shiny gadgets (smart-phones or i-pads) even when we go out together. Besides, people who use various social networks a lot (such as Facebook or Instagram) should worry more about their privacy.
Summing up, I could say that there are serious arguments both for and against the use of new technologies but anyway it’s really difficult to imagine our life without them today.

Although many people blame technology for destroying nature and causing pollution, and say that it is the worst evil in the world , I still believe that it has greatly changed our lives for the better as we hardly imagine what would happen if we went for a day without technology.
Technology is very popular in our daily life thanks to its advantages. As we know, firstly, technology in household helps people do the housework. For example, housewives do not need to wash manually, but they can use washing machine.
Another reason why I advocate the viewpoint that technology has made the world a better place to live is that it makes the world smaller. Nowadays people can travel faster and easier to other places by car, bus and air-plane, and see many new interesting things around the world. In addition, they communicate with people in different countries through the Internet and phones, which saves them lots of time and money.
But the most worthwhile benefit technology has brought to us is that it makes us healthier and happier. Clear progress in medicine, use new technologies to diagnose and combat diseases make therapy more effective. It allows us to cure serious diseases such as cancer and cardiopathy. Statistics show that life expectancy is getting longer. In Europe, for example, today life expectancy has climbed past 80 and people are glad to be alive; the longer they live in good health, the happier they feel they are.
So, as we go forward into this ‘magical future’, will technology make the world a better place to live? Experts say it will!

To stay up-to-date people keep buying newer items. Soon our houses and work places will look like electronic stores. Technology is all around us. First of all, we need it for work.
All modern offices are equipped with computers, scanners, printers, and other useful machines. One of the most important devices today is the wi-fi modem as it provides Internet. Secondly, technologies surround us at home, in cars and everywhere.
There are many people who are against new technologies. In my opinion, technological progress has made our lives more interesting and bright. Thanks to computers and Internet I find more educational resources. Such electronic items as vacuum-cleaner, washing machine, microwave, dish washer, blender and some others have made my mum’s life easier. So I’m sure that new technologies are for good. In conclusion, I’d like to say, that technological progress continues and it moves rather fast. Thus, I think that soon we will live in ‘smart’ houses with robots doing all housework instead of us.

Firstly, all modern inventions facilitate human life. People learn new information thanks to TV and the computer. The washing machine, the dishwasher, the microwave oven, the vacuum cleaner… All these subjects give a person more free time. Secondly, the Internet, for example, helps people not only to get necessary information but also communicate with relatives, friends, colleagues, and partners even without leaving the house. There is Skype or e-mail using which you can solve most problems very quickly. Thirdly, modern technology can save us from getting bored by various interesting programs on TV or fascinating computer games.
But there is another point of view. Some people are sure that modern inventions make us lazy, and we don’t want to go outside or meet with friends. Besides, some people also think that technology influences man’s health, his physical and psychological condition.
I don’t agree to that point of view. People meet and walk with their friends when it is possible, but in our times life has become very fast and the Internet helps to accelerate the solution of insignificant problems. Во-первых, все современные изобретения облегчают человеческую жизнь. Люди узнают новую информацию благодаря Телевидению и компьютеру. Стиральная машина, посудомоечная машина, микроволновая печь, пылесос … Все эти предметы дают человеку больше свободного времени. Во-вторых, интернет, например, помогает людям не только получить необходимую информацию, но также общаться с родственниками, друзьями, коллегами и партнерами даже не выходя из дома. Это Скайп или электронная почта, с помощью которого можно решить большинство проблем очень быстро. В-третьих, современные технологии могут спасти нас от скуки с помощью различных интересных программ на ТВ, или с помощью увлекательных компьютерных игр.
Но есть и другая точка зрения. Некоторые люди уверены, что современные изобретения делают нас ленивыми, и мы не хотим выходить из дома или встретиться с друзьями. Кроме того, некоторые люди также считают, что технологии влияют на здоровье людей, на их физическое и психологическое состояние.
Я не согласен с этой точкой зрения. Люди встречаются и гуляют с друзьями когда это возможно, но в наше время жизнь стала очень быстро и интернет помогает ускорить решение незначительных проблем. Кроме того, вы не должны использовать электрическое оборудование в течение всего дня, если вы боитесь страдать от этого.

Technology has penetrated every aspect of our lives, changing how we work, how we learn, how we live. We use computers at work and in the home. Nowadays we can’t do without mobile phones, PCs, digital tape recorders, laptops, fax machines and air conditioners.
All these gadgets facilitate our lives and save our time. We communicate through mobile phones, SMS messages and various social networks. Mobile phones enable us to stay in touch and to be reachable everywhere, they give us the freedom of movement. The Internet is a great source of information for people. Many people can find a job through the Internet. In addition, the widespread use of Internet has brought about profound changes to political, economic and cultural arenas. Social networks bring together users of different ages and professions.
Also, some people believe that internet dating may help find love. But I doubt it. Technology, doubtlessly, simplifies life. On the other hand, technological progress has brought many negative effects to our lives. For example, some scientists say that social networks are halting our emotional development. Some cars have negative effects on the environment, such as pollution. Unfortunately, people can use technology to create weapons of massive destruction. But I think that the future of the planet is in our hands. Therefore, people should use technology wisely in benefit to their lives.

Secondly, thanks to modern technologies we can communicate with people, to write letters, to find new friends. It is a real pleasure. When you miss your family, you can call and see the people who are dear to you using Skype.
Thirdly, with the help of modern technologies we can gain different knowledge. We can study various subjects. We can learn everything. It simplifies our life. Modern technologies have a lot of pros, but they have some cons too. You should mind that they may damage your health. But, to my mind, they still have more pros than cons.
Thanks to the Internet you can do almost everything. You can watch movies, play games, make various projects, buy many things, read books, and do many others. Modern technologies help us to relax, for example, when we watch entertainment programs on TV, listen to music…Modern technologies are great helpers in our life. They help us in many ways and simplify our life.

Can you imagine your life without technologies? I am sure that living without them is impossible for us because technologies have become an important part of our life.
First of all, a lot of people use technologies in their work. A lot of bases and information resources exist thanks to technological progress and it makes our life easier. Long ago we used to write big texts with a pen. But now it is done with the help of machines.
Secondly, technologies are around us everywhere. Even very primitive things are achievements of technological progress. Radio, refrigerators, electricity, washing machines became customary long ago and we cannot see our life without them. What is more, if we took them away at all, we would find ourselves in an ancient world.
Thirdly, technological progress allows us to do a lot of things which would be impossible without it. For example, computers help to communicate with friends who live in other countries.
Some people think that humanity can do without technologies.They are sure that they don`t need computers and printers. Somebody even does not use microwave oven. But they should realize that technologies have entered their life, too.
All in all, technological progress makes our life more interesting and bright, due to it we can be more educated. Now we have a lot of free time and we can use it as we want.
Consequently, existing without technologies is impossible now.

В третьих, технологический прогресс позволяет нам делать многие вещи, которые без него были невозможны. Например, компьютеры помогают нам общаться с друзьям. которые живут в других странах.
Некоторые люди думают, что человечество может обойтись без технологий.Они уверены, что им не нужны компьютеры и принтеры. Некоторые даже пе пользуются микроволновыми печами. Но они должны осознать, что технологии уже вошли в их жизнь.

Nobody would deny the importance of modern technology. It has made life easier and better in many ways. The best definition of technology is science applied to practical purposes. Due to its rapid development people can use many smart gadgets in everyday life. Most housewives stopped washing the clothes by hand. They don’t even wash the dishes after meal, because the dishwasher can do it for them. Nobody uses the old-fashioned brooms, as there are advanced vacuum-cleaners. All these modern machines have nearly replaced people. However, it is not always good. As any other field in the world, modern technology has its advantages and drawbacks. It is undoubtedly helpful to have smart appliances in the house. They help to deal with household chores. It is also good to have such gadgets as laptop, MP3 player, smartphone, iphone, camera, headphones, printer, scanner, tablet etc. Today, people simply can’t imagine life without these machines. However, it isn’t always healthy to use them for a long time. Sitting long hours in front of the computer leads to eyesight and back problems. Cell phones contain negative vibes that affect human organism. So, many health specialists are against the excessive use of cell phones. Household appliances and machines that make people’s life easier often lead to idleness and obesity. Modern offices are full of self-operating machines. That’s why some jobs are disappearing and people stay unemployed. In conclusion, I’d like to say that technological progress can be dangerous at some extent. Even surrounding nature suffers from scientific advances.

Все эти современные машины почти заменили людей. Тем не менее, это не всегда хорошо. Как и любая другая область в мире, современные технологии имеют свои преимущества и недостатки. Несомненно, полезно иметь в доме такие устройства. Они помогают справляться с домашними делами. Также хорошо иметь такие гаджеты, как ноутбук, MP3-плеер, смартфон, айфон, фотоаппарат, наушники, принтер, сканер, планшет и т.д. Сегодня люди просто не могут представить свою жизнь без этих устройств. Тем не менее, их длительное использование не всегда хорошо для здоровья. Если сидеть часами перед компьютером, можно заработать проблемы со зрением и позвоночником. Сотовые телефоны содержат излучения, отрицательно влияющие на организм человека. Поэтому, многие специалисты здравоохранения против чрезмерного использования мобильных телефонов. Бытовая техника и устройства, которые делают жизнь людей проще, часто приводят к праздности и ожирению. Современные офисы полны автоматических приборов. Secondly, technologies surround us at home, in cars and everywhere. It includes TVs, radios, refrigerators, vacuum-cleaners, washing machines, CD-players, e-books, cameras and else. Perhaps, the most important thing about technological progress is that it allows us to do many things which would be impossible without it. For example, we can communicate with friends from other countries with the help of computers. We can even see them and have a live conversation. There are many people who are against new technologies. In my opinion, technological progress has made our lives more interesting and bright. Thanks to computers and Internet I find more educational resources. Such electronic items as vacuum-cleaner, washing machine, microwave, dish washer, blender and some others have made my mum’s life easier. So I’m sure that new technologies are for good. In conclusion, I’d like to say, that technological progress continues and it moves rather fast. Thus, I think that soon we will live in ‘smart’ houses with robots doing all housework instead of us.В настоящее время люди с трудом представляют свою жизнь без современных технологий. Мир не стоит на месте. С каждым днем люди делаю всё больше и больше открытий в сфере Науки и Технологий. The 21 century has begun. But our life, however, does not seem to have changed in comparacement with the 20 century. We are not living on Mars or exploring new galaxies though many writers of the 20 century predicted that. We are still cooking our meal ourselves instead of using the help of robots and spend hours travelling from one place to another though according to the predictions we were supposed to do this in several seconds. So has our life changed at all?
It seems – no. But let us look on some examples. Who could imagine the role of the computers in the modern world even 30 years ago? Sci-fi writers told us about the probable usage of the computers in science but, I believe, nobody really thought that a computer would become an absolutely necessary thing in our everyday life-a workspace and an entertainer in one thing. And what about the revolution in communications which has been happening for the last 10 years? I mean the mobile phones and the Internet. It seems it was quite recently when a telephone at home was the only way to talk with somebody far away from you and still many people preferred to write letters and then the waiting for the response could last for months sometimes. Now everything is quite different. You can get in touch with your friend from nearly any place of the Earth with the help of the mobile phone and the response on your letter arrives the next second it was sent. And these are the most obvious changes which influenced our lives. I do not mention the latest researches in biology such as the decoding of human genome which was finished in the very beginning if the 21 century or in chemistry and physics which led to the opening of a new frontier-nanotechnologies. We do not pay attention to these facts-but probably just because they have not influenced our life yet.
However, this does not mean that there would be no influence. The possible results, for example, on medicine are fascinating. And, well, it is difficult to predict what will happen in the future-technologies are improving all the time and I would not be surprised if in 10 years` time things that now we cannot imagine would become common and familiar.
Still, we should not forget about the problems that were left to us by the 20 century. The ecological situation is rather serious and globalization has led to some cultural misunderstandings between different nations. However, these problems can be solved if all the humankind would not only realize the importance of these problems but would do something about it as well.
To sum it up, we have lot things to do in the 21 century-from learning todeal with each other to exploring new scientific frontiers. So, what waits for us in the 21 century? Well, that depends on us!

Писатели-фантасты говорили о возможном использовании компьтеров в науке, но, думаю, никто серьезно не думал, что компьютер станет необходимостью в нашей повседневной жизни-средством для работы и развлечением в одномлице. А революция в средствах связи, которая происходит в последние 10 лет? Я говорю о мобильных телефонах и Интернете. Кажется, что совсем недавно домашниий телефон был единственны средством чтобы поговорить с кем-нибудь далеко от вас, и все-таки многие предпочитали писать письма и потом ожидание ответа могло затягиваться на месяца. Теперь все изменилось. Можно связаться с приятелем по мобильному телефону практически из любой точки Земли, а ответ на ваше письмо приходит на следующую секунду после того, как ответ был отправлен. И это самые очевидные изменения, повлиявшие на нашу жизнь. Я не говорю о последних исследованиях в биологии, таких как расшифровка человеческого генома, законченная в самом начале 21 века или в химии и физике, которые привели к открытию новой области исследований-нанотехнологий. Мы не обращаем на это внимания, но, возможно, только потому, что это пока еще не повлияло на нашу жизнь.
Впрочем, это не означает, что влияния не будет. Возможныедостижения, например, в области медицины многообещающи. И на самом деле достаточно сложно предсказывать, что произойдет в будущем-технологии постоянно совершенствуются и я не удивлюсь, если через 10 лет то, что сейчас мы не можем даже и представить, станет чем-то обыденным.
Однако мы не должны забывать и о проблемах, оставленных нам 20 веком. Ситуация с экологией представляется весьма серьезной, а глобализация привела к некоторым межкультурным противоречиям между разными нациями. Впрочем, эти проблемы могут быть разрешены, если человечество не только осознает важность этих проблем, но и предпримет действия по их разрешению.
В общем, нам многое предстоит сделать в 21 веке – начиная с того, чтобы научиться приходить к взаимопониманию и кончая исследованиями новых областей науки. Так что же нас ждет в 21 веке? Это зависит только от нас!

Education
Technology has become a valuable
academic tool. All modern possibilities of the Internet with its access
to information, computers, laptops with their different functions,
calculators enable you to study more effectively. Some classrooms are
equipped with Interactive Whiteboards, projectors, sound systems,
laptops which enable teachers to make lessons interesting and effective.
Communication
This sphere also benefits from
technology. Having a mobile phone, for example, you can be quickly
connected with your friend or business partner and solve the problem
instantly. Having a web camera and the Net you see and talk to a person
who is far away from you. Also you can send and get information in a
matter of seconds.
Film industry
Technology plays an enormous
part in the film industry today. Filmmakers rely on technologies to
create amazing special effects and animation.
Entertainment
There are a lot of modern
technologies which help us keep entertained, for example TV, the
Internet, musical systems, digital cameras, mobile phones, PCPs, laptops
etc.

to divide into two groups. Using different linkers, opinion phrases you
have to give arguments in favour of computers and against them. Then we
will draw a conclusion.

If a
computer is not working properly, most people do not know how to
fix it, and this can be very annoying. You have to turn for help
to the technical support/expert. It can be expensive.

Let’s draw a conclusion. There
are strong arguments both for and against the use of computers. They
have replaced humans in many jobs and made our lives considerably
easier. It’s difficult to imagine life without them.

-New technologies always bring
changes and new additions to the language but the telecommunications
revolution of the last few years has caused some of the quickest and the
most widespread changes yet seen.
New words as webcam, spam,
chat, cyberspace, dotcom and others are entering the language all the
time to put a name to things that haven’t existed before.
Our students have prepared
their presentations about some new words and their origin. The material
has been taken from the BBC learning English site.
Hole-in-the-wall
Hole-in-the-wall is one of those
phrases where you get a lot of words hyphenated, if you wrote it down:
hole-in-the-wall, being used as a single word, as a noun. “‘I’m going to
the hole-in-the-wall”‘ you might say or “‘I’m getting some money out of
the hole-in-the-wall”‘. Well you can see what it means, it means an
automatic cash dispenser – one of those installed in the outside wall of
a bank or some other money-giving organization. It’s British colloquial;
it’s not used as far as I know in the States, or in Australia, or
anywhere, although I wouldn’t be surprised if it spread a little bit –
always written with hyphens. Very unusual to see phrases of this kind
and sentences being used in this way, as single words. But if you listen
out for them, you’ll find them – especially being used as adjectives.
Have you heard people for instance say “‘he’s a very
get-up-and-go-person”‘? Now there’s the sentence ‘get up and go’. To say
a “‘get-up-and-go-person”‘ means somebody who’s got lots of enthusiasm.
Wi-fi
Wi-fi. W-I-F-I. Sometimes
written with a hyphen, sometimes not. Wireless fidelity (Fidelity-radio:точность
воспроизведения).
Technically, it’s a standard ensuring(обеспечивать)
that equipment works on a wireless network. It’s on analogy with
‘hi-fi’, for high fidelity, that used to be common for recording some
years ago.
Hi-fi- a piece of high
quality electronic equipment for playing recorded music =stereo-hi-fi (муз
системы, проигрыватели,
усилители, видеотехника)
It’s an interesting usage
because it shows the return of a word that everybody thought had gone
completely out of date – ‘wireless’. I mean, ‘wireless’ was around when
wireless was invented, but it was quickly replaced by ‘radio’. And
everybody talks about ‘radio broadcasting’ not ‘wireless broadcasting’
and then, suddenly it came back in again with this internet connection.
It’s used now for all sorts of
applications. TV remotes can be talked about as wireless, if you
control your garage door, it’s a wireless control, mobile
phones are sometimes referred to as wireless, and GPS (Global
Positioning System- a system that uses radio signals from satellites to
show you exact position on the Earth on a special piece of equipment.),
you know, satellite things in your car – wireless.
Wi-fi is just one word of many
that has come into usage in the last few years, talking about the way in
which we cope with the Internet.
Blog
In 2001 the word blog didn’t
exist in the language yet. How fast the internet moves! Those who blog,
bloggers, carry out the activity of blogging, setting up a blog site,
with a unique web address in order to do so. It’s an abbreviation of
‘web log’; a phrase that was first used in 1997, both as a noun and as a
verb, a web log. It’s a genre, a it’s bit like diary writing, or
bulletin posting. People add their posts or diary entries, with some
regularity, if you’re a blogger you do it daily at least, often several
times a day.

At the end of the lesson we must
conclude that technology is developing all the time. It affects
different spheres of our life, our language. We know how important today
to be prepared to learn how to use new technology. Moreover we should
expect major technological advances in the near future.
