The mankind has achieved high results in technologies. However it has some disadvantages. First of all, it is the environmental pollution. There are many types of pollution. It may be air pollution, light pollution, littering, noise pollution, water pollution and so on.

In my opinion, people must care about the environment. We must keep our planet from pollution. Fortunately, there are many ecological organizations which do their best to minimize environmental pollution.

People have always polluted their surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. With the development of civilization human’s influence in nature began to increase. With the advent of big industrial cities which put huge amounts of pollutants into small areas the problem has become much more serious. Today, our planet is in great danger.

The most horrible ecological disaster befell Ukraine after the Chernobyl tragedy in April 1986. A great damage has been done to people’s health, the agriculture and forests. The consequences of this explosion at the atomic power-station are tragic for both the Ukrainians and other nations.
The problem of environmental pollution is rather complicated and serious. Automobiles pollute the air but they provide transportation for people. Enterprises pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Therefore, the protection of the environment should be approached comprehensively.
The protection of the environment requires the cooperation of all nations. Nowadays government of many countries and the international organizations, like Greenpeace, Green Cross International and Friends of Earth, use direct actions to stop the destruction of the natural environment.

Air pollution is one of the major problems of today. Millions of people all over the world live in areas in which the air is not safe to breathe. As for Russia, it is estimated that Altai is the region with the largest percent of harmful substances in the air. In most cases air pollution is caused by people.
Main sources of air pollution
Industry
One of the main sources of this type of pollution is industry. Numerous factories and plants release into the atmosphere a lot of waste such as poisonous chemicals and, what is worse, particles of heavy metals. This process not only produces harmful effects on the atmosphere, but influences man’s health as well. People are suffering from lung diseases more and more often or have headaches, breathing such polluted air.
Waste
Waste, created by people may occur in the form of gases or particles of solid and liquid matter which appear as a result of burning fossil fuels. Burning of garbage also contributes to the problem.
Means of transport
One more dramatic thing is an increasing number of cars and other means of transport as their fumes penetrate into the atmosphere and destroy the ozone layer which protects the Earth from the dangerous light of the Sun.
Acid rain
There is also a close connection between air and water pollution. Please pay attention to acid rain. It happens when sulphur and nitrogen compounds mix with moisture of the air and fall to Earth in rain or snow. After that acid water flows into rivers and lakes, which become so polluted that no fish or plants can survive.

К сожалению, последствия нашей деятельности опасны для природы. А мы зависим от неё полностью, значит, последствия опасны и для нас. Все взаимозависимо. Нет свежего воздуха и воды- нет растений, нет растений- нет животных, а там и люди начнут страдать.

In recent years the number of environmental problems has increased greatly. One of the most dangerous problems for our planet is global warming which means that most climates all over the world are changing and getting warmer. It happens because we burn too much petrol resources, such as oil and coal, and the Earth heats up. This process can cause melting of the polar ice and the sea level rising in the future. If the climate changes there will be floods, heavy storms or severe droughts in different areas of the world. Cutting down on exhaust fumes from vehicles could help solve this serious problem.
Our planet is overpopulated, that’s why we are using up our natural resources – they are not endless. So the scientists have started looking for some alternate forms of energy such as water, wind, sunlight and even tides. These resources are clean, natural and unlimited. I’m glad that modern automobile industries make hybrids which use electric or solar energy instead of petrol. It would definitely help protect our environment from pollution.
There are different kinds of environmental pollution: air pollution, water pollution, land pollution. Sadly, not all human beings realize or admit that we are the ones who cause these problems and we should be the first to stop them and protect our environment. Ecosystems play an important role and preserving biodiversity is vital for our planet. Extermination of animals and carelessness towards plants must be prevented.
It is well known that our planet is overpopulated. This depletes natural resources. Some countries already suffer from scarcity of water, food and fuel.

В результате животные и растения лишаются среды обитания, а люди страдают от нехватки качественной пресной воды. Глобальное потепление является результатом деятельности человека. Развитие промышленности приводит к выбросу вредных веществ в атмосферу. Это значит, что воздух на нашей планете нагревается.
Это приводит к таким последствиям, как повышение уровня воды Мирового океана и изменение в производительности сельского хозяйства.
В последнее время животный и растительный мир нашей планеты находятся в серьезной опасности, так как деятельность человека угрожает их спокойному существованию.
Экосистемы играют важную роль, и сохранение биоразнообразия чрезвычайно важно для нашей планеты. Необходимо предотвратить истребление животных и беззаботное отношение к растениям.

One must care about the environment. The pollution of the environment is a great problem which people must solve in the near future. The causes of it are different: emissions, wrong disposal etc. Of course, it is hard for particular person to solve the problem of emissions, for example. However everyone can solve the problem of rubbish, one of the causes of the pollution.

Perhaps, the utterance “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a bit trivial but it works. How often do we see that people leave waste somewhere in the woods and rivers but not in the waste bin, for example? I saw that many times. I think people must not do that. So the first step is quite simple: do not leave waste in places which are not intended for rubbish. Why is this so important? The waste may contain polymeric and similar materials. The process of decomposing of them takes much time, decades and even centuries. It has a negative effect on plant life and animals and fishes. Many animals eat such waste and die.

Recycling plays a great role, too. It helps to save resources and keep the environment from dangerous for it materials. There are many special waste bins for recycling in many cities all over the world. You just need sort the rubbish and then, for example, throw out the bottles into one bin, paper into another one and so on.

Современные заводы и фабрики отправляют много дыма в атмосферу, поэтому в настоящее время в крупных городах трудно дышать. Предприятия сжигают нефть, уголь и древесину и вырабатывают углекислый газ, что ведет к разрушению озонового слоя и климатическим изменениям.
Из-за промышленной революции заводы сейчас выбрасывают дым и химические вещества, которые никогда ранее не были в контакте с легкими человека. В результате у людей появляются новые заболевания, аллергические реакции и плохое самочувствие.

Загрязнение воздуха оказывает негативное влияние на качество воды. Загрязнители воздуха могут накапливаться в земле и воде, иногда на огромных расстояниях от своих первоначальных источников.
Еще одним результатом загрязнения воздуха является появление так называемых “кислотных дождей”. Кислотные дожди в основном возникают, когда заводы выбрасывают в воздух высокий уровень серы. Затем сера соединяется с дождевой водой и образуется слабая серная кислота. Сам по себе кислотный дождь не может навредить человеку, но он наносит вред окружающей среде. Со временем, кислотные дожди могут погубить растения, слабые структуры и жизнь во всех озерах и реках.

Man pollutes the environment with domestic and industrial waste. This is a by-product of civilization. Factory and furnace chimneys threw into the air clouds of black poisonous coal smoke already hundreds of years ago. Now there are even more factories, and with them, poisoning air, water and land substances: they are found even in Antarctica and the Himalayan peaks. So far we can only limit harmful emissions, recycle household garbage and waste products, and use materials that are decomposed by living organisms, for example, soil bacteria.
The ozone layer delays the ultraviolet rays of the sun, which cause skin cancer. Against the background of chronic pollution of the environment, ecological disasters sometimes happen. For example, in the event of an accident, oil is poured from the hold of the tanker and forms a huge spot on the surface of the ocean. Oil covers the animals with a fatal slick. Chlorofluorocarbons, which are used in the manufacture of refrigerators and aerosol cans, rising to the upper atmosphere, destroy the ozone layer. Recently, dangerous “Ozone Holes” have been discovered over the Arctic and Antarctic, and they continue to increase.
Exhaust gases contain nitrogen oxides, and when burning coal in power plants, sulfur dioxide is released. Connecting in the air with water, these substances turn into acids, which then fall out together with the rain. Acid rain erodes buildings, ruins forests and ponds. New technologies can reduce emissions, but this requires colossal costs.
Exhaust gases contain harmful lead, oxide and carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which are not only the cause of acid rain but also a choking smog. Now people put catalytic converters on exhaust pipes of cars: they reduce harmful emissions.
Poisonous and other hazardous wastes are often buried. In this case, they kill all life around, spreading with water. The Northern Sea, once rich in fish, is almost completely poisoned now.

Water is very important for life on the Earth. It is in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. Water is a necessary part for existence of all living things. Human body contains from 50% to 70% of water.
Every day the average household uses about 500 liters of water for drinking, cooking, hygiene needs, laundry, etc. Water is essential for our health so the quality of water is one of the most important problems in the civilized world.
There is much water on our planet and at the same time there is little water on it. It is so because very little water on the Earth is good for drinking. The supply of clean water is getting less every day because of its useless consumption and pollution.
For example, lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the Earth. The lake is very beautiful but now it is in great danger, because of the factories which are near it. At some places the water in the lake is so dirty that it can kill animals and plants in Baikal and near it.
The main source of water pollution is the man. Plants and factories often dump their waste directly into rivers and lakes. This waste is often toxic. Though the pollutants can be carried away they never disappear and the quality of water dramatically falls.
Air pollution has a negative impact on water quality too. Air pollutants can be deposited on land and water, sometimes at great distances from their original sources.
The pollution of the world’s ocean is the result of human’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crises. If people want to survive they must do their best to solve the problems of environmental pollution.

In my opinion, people must care about the environment. We must keep our planet from pollution. Fortunately, there are many ecological organizations which do their best to minimize environmental pollution.

The most horrible ecological disaster befell Ukraine after the Chernobyl tragedy in April 1986. A great damage has been done to people’s health, the agriculture and forests. The consequences of this explosion at the atomic power-station are tragic for both the Ukrainians and other nations.
The problem of environmental pollution is rather complicated and serious. Automobiles pollute the air but they provide transportation for people. Enterprises pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Therefore, the protection of the environment should be approached comprehensively.
The protection of the environment requires the cooperation of all nations. Nowadays government of many countries and the international organizations, like Greenpeace, Green Cross International and Friends of Earth, use direct actions to stop the destruction of the natural environment.

Air pollution is one of the major problems of today. Millions of people all over the world live in areas in which the air is not safe to breathe. As for Russia, it is estimated that Altai is the region with the largest percent of harmful substances in the air. In most cases air pollution is caused by people.
Main sources of air pollution
Industry
One of the main sources of this type of pollution is industry. Numerous factories and plants release into the atmosphere a lot of waste such as poisonous chemicals and, what is worse, particles of heavy metals. This process not only produces harmful effects on the atmosphere, but influences man’s health as well. People are suffering from lung diseases more and more often or have headaches, breathing such polluted air.
Waste
Waste, created by people may occur in the form of gases or particles of solid and liquid matter which appear as a result of burning fossil fuels. Burning of garbage also contributes to the problem.
Means of transport
One more dramatic thing is an increasing number of cars and other means of transport as their fumes penetrate into the atmosphere and destroy the ozone layer which protects the Earth from the dangerous light of the Sun.
Acid rain
There is also a close connection between air and water pollution. Please pay attention to acid rain. It happens when sulphur and nitrogen compounds mix with moisture of the air and fall to Earth in rain or snow. After that acid water flows into rivers and lakes, which become so polluted that no fish or plants can survive.
Conclusion
Air is an integral part of the ecosystem which is absolutely essential for all the living beings to be alive, so it’s really important to make it clean and to take care of it.

К сожалению, последствия нашей деятельности опасны для природы. А мы зависим от неё полностью, значит, последствия опасны и для нас. Все взаимозависимо. Нет свежего воздуха и воды- нет растений, нет растений- нет животных, а там и люди начнут страдать.
Однажды я услышала: если пчёлы исчезнут, наша планета просуществует всего несколько лет без них.
In recent years the number of environmental problems has increased greatly. One of the most dangerous problems for our planet is global warming which means that most climates all over the world are changing and getting warmer. It happens because we burn too much petrol resources, such as oil and coal, and the Earth heats up. This process can cause melting of the polar ice and the sea level rising in the future. If the climate changes there will be floods, heavy storms or severe droughts in different areas of the world. Cutting down on exhaust fumes from vehicles could help solve this serious problem.
Our planet is overpopulated, that’s why we are using up our natural resources – they are not endless. So the scientists have started looking for some alternate forms of energy such as water, wind, sunlight and even tides. These resources are clean, natural and unlimited. I’m glad that modern automobile industries make hybrids which use electric or solar energy instead of petrol. It would definitely help protect our environment from pollution.
There are different kinds of environmental pollution: air pollution, water pollution, land pollution. Sadly, not all human beings realize or admit that we are the ones who cause these problems and we should be the first to stop them and protect our environment. Because of the industrial revolution the air is polluted with awful chemicals; seas and oceans are poisoned with oil spills. Many rare species of flora and fauna are threatened with extinction.
We should be proud to live on our wonderful planet and understand that the consequences of pollution might be terrible and affect us and our children later. We should start recycling things made of glass, paper, plastic and aluminium. We should stop smoking and plant as many trees as we can because they can give us more oxygen. We need to drive less and use public transport in order to reduce fuel burning. We are responsible for the situation.

Our planet Earth is only a tiny part of the universe, and it is so far the only place where human beings can live.
We always polluted our surroundings. But until now pollution was not such a huge problem. People lived in the countryside and couldn’t produce such amount of pollution that would lead to a dangerous situation on a global scale.
With the development of industrial cities, which create huge amounts of pollutants, the problem has become real. Nowadays our planet is in serious danger. Global warming, acid rains, air and water pollution, overpopulation are the problems that threaten human lives on the Earth.
Every year world industry pollutes the air that we breathe with. A great number of cities suffer from smog. Rainforests are cut down. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result, some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants are extinct. A lot of seas, rivers and lakes are filled with poison like industrial and nuclear wastes, chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The pollution of air and the world’s ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of the ecological crisis.
People should consider their attitude to the environment. Some progress has already been made in this direction. Numerous conferences have been held by a lot of agencies to discuss problems facing ecologically poor regions including the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass and Chernobyl. Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the environment.
What can we do to save our planet? First of all, people should switch to alternative forms of power, such as solar power or wind power. Secondly, the use of atomic power must be banned. Thirdly, we need to recycle. It’s the art of turning waste into new products. It would be a good idea if people started riding bicycles instead of driving cars. We are obliged to protect nature. If everybody cares, it will make a difference.

Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from automobiles and factories. Government can pass the laws that would make enterprises take measures for reducing of pollution. Individuals and groups of people can work together to persuade enterprises to stop polluting activities.

Water pollution is another serious problem. Plants and factories release harmful substances not only into the air but into the natural reservoirs, too.
As a result of that, animals and plants lose their habitat, and people suffer from the shortage of high-quality drinking water.
Global warming is the result of human activity. The industrial development causes the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. That means that air on our planet is getting hotter.
This results in such consequences as raising of water level in the World ocean and changes in agricultural productivity.
Lately, animal world and plant kingdom of our planet have been at serious risk as human activity endangers their serene existence.
Ecosystems play an important role and preserving biodiversity is vital for our planet. Extermination of animals and carelessness towards plants must be prevented.

One must care about the environment. The pollution of the environment is a great problem which people must solve in the near future. The causes of it are different: emissions, wrong disposal etc. Of course, it is hard for particular person to solve the problem of emissions, for example. However everyone can solve the problem of rubbish, one of the causes of the pollution.
Нужно заботиться об окружающей среде. Загрязнение окружающей среды является большой проблемой, которую люди должны решить в ближайшем будущем. Причины его разные: выбросы, неправильная утилизация отходов и так далее. Конечно, отдельному человеку трудно это решить, например, проблему выбросов. Однако каждый может решить проблему загрязнения мусором.
Perhaps, the utterance “Be the change you want to see in the world” is a bit trivial but it works. How often do we see that people leave waste somewhere in the woods and rivers but not in the waste bin, for example? I saw that many times. I think people must not do that. So the first step is quite simple: do not leave waste in places which are not intended for rubbish. Why is this so important? The waste may contain polymeric and similar materials. The process of decomposing of them takes much time, decades and even centuries. It has a negative effect on plant life and animals and fishes. Many animals eat such waste and die.
Может быть, фраза «Чтобы изменить мир, начни с себя» немного банальная, но она работает. Как часто мы видим, что люди оставляют отходы где-то в лесах и реках, но не в мусорной корзине, к примеру? Я видела такое много раз. Я думаю, что люди не должны делать это. Таким образом, первый шаг довольно прост: не оставляйте отходы в местах, которые не предназначены для выброса мусора. Почему это так важно? Отходы могут содержать полимерные и аналогичные материалы. Процесс их разложения занимает много времени, десятилетия и даже столетия. Это оказывает негативное влияние на жизнь растений, животных и рыб. Многие животные едят такие отходы и умирают.
Recycling plays a great role, too. It helps to save resources and keep the environment from dangerous for it materials. There are many special waste bins for recycling in many cities all over the world. You just need sort the rubbish and then, for example, throw out the bottles into one bin, paper into another one and so on.

Есть много мусорных баков, предназначенных для конкретных видов отходов во многих городах по всему миру. Из-за промышленной революции заводы сейчас выбрасывают дым и химические вещества, которые никогда ранее не были в контакте с легкими человека. В результате у людей появляются новые заболевания, аллергические реакции и плохое самочувствие.
Аэрозоли и другие химические вещества также разрушают озоновый слой, защищающий Землю от ультрафиолетового излучения, исходящего от солнца.
Загрязнение воздуха оказывает негативное влияние на качество воды. Загрязнители воздуха могут накапливаться в земле и воде, иногда на огромных расстояниях от своих первоначальных источников.
Еще одним результатом загрязнения воздуха является появление так называемых “кислотных дождей”. Кислотные дожди в основном возникают, когда заводы выбрасывают в воздух высокий уровень серы. Затем сера соединяется с дождевой водой и образуется слабая серная кислота. Сам по себе кислотный дождь не может навредить человеку, но он наносит вред окружающей среде. Со временем, кислотные дожди могут погубить растения, слабые структуры и жизнь во всех озерах и реках.
Загрязнение воздуха и разрушение озонового слоя являются результатом небрежного обращения с природой и требуют принятия активных мер для предотвращения экологической катастрофы.
Man pollutes the environment with domestic and industrial waste. This is a by-product of civilization. Factory and furnace chimneys threw into the air clouds of black poisonous coal smoke already hundreds of years ago. Now there are even more factories, and with them, poisoning air, water and land substances: they are found even in Antarctica and the Himalayan peaks. So far we can only limit harmful emissions, recycle household garbage and waste products, and use materials that are decomposed by living organisms, for example, soil bacteria.
The ozone layer delays the ultraviolet rays of the sun, which cause skin cancer. Against the background of chronic pollution of the environment, ecological disasters sometimes happen. For example, in the event of an accident, oil is poured from the hold of the tanker and forms a huge spot on the surface of the ocean. Oil covers the animals with a fatal slick. Chlorofluorocarbons, which are used in the manufacture of refrigerators and aerosol cans, rising to the upper atmosphere, destroy the ozone layer. Recently, dangerous “Ozone Holes” have been discovered over the Arctic and Antarctic, and they continue to increase.
Exhaust gases contain nitrogen oxides, and when burning coal in power plants, sulfur dioxide is released. Connecting in the air with water, these substances turn into acids, which then fall out together with the rain. Acid rain erodes buildings, ruins forests and ponds. New technologies can reduce emissions, but this requires colossal costs.
Exhaust gases contain harmful lead, oxide and carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, which are not only the cause of acid rain but also a choking smog. Now people put catalytic converters on exhaust pipes of cars: they reduce harmful emissions.
Poisonous and other hazardous wastes are often buried. In this case, they kill all life around, spreading with water. The Northern Sea, once rich in fish, is almost completely poisoned now.

Water is very important for life on the Earth. It is in oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. Water is a necessary part for existence of all living things. Human body contains from 50% to 70% of water.
Every day the average household uses about 500 liters of water for drinking, cooking, hygiene needs, laundry, etc. Water is essential for our health so the quality of water is one of the most important problems in the civilized world.
There is much water on our planet and at the same time there is little water on it. It is so because very little water on the Earth is good for drinking. The supply of clean water is getting less every day because of its useless consumption and pollution.
For example, lake Baikal is the deepest freshwater lake on the Earth. The lake is very beautiful but now it is in great danger, because of the factories which are near it. At some places the water in the lake is so dirty that it can kill animals and plants in Baikal and near it.
The main source of water pollution is the man. Plants and factories often dump their waste directly into rivers and lakes. This waste is often toxic. Though the pollutants can be carried away they never disappear and the quality of water dramatically falls.
Air pollution has a negative impact on water quality too. Air pollutants can be deposited on land and water, sometimes at great distances from their original sources.
The pollution of the world’s ocean is the result of human’s careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crises. If people want to survive they must do their best to solve the problems of environmental pollution.
