The city is situated on the east coast of the Atlantic Ocean and consists of five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Richmond and Queens. New York is also known as New Amsterdam or the Big Apple. It’s one of the most important financial, cultural, political, economic centers in the world. The population of the city is over 8 million people and every year more than 48 million of foreign tourists come to visit it. The reasons can be different. Some come to study in New York, some to work, and the majority wants just to see the places of interest. There are a great number of places to visit in the city, but one of the most famous sights is the Statue of Liberty. People from all over the world want to take a photo with this giant sculpture of a woman, who is the national symbol of freedom. Another famous sight is the Broadway Street. Nobody misses it when visiting the city. It’s situated in Manhattan and houses lots of banks and other commercial organizations. There are also lots of entertaining and spectacular facilities which turned the Broadway into the symbol of entertainment industry. New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest seaport. It is the business centre of the United States.
New York is situated in the mouth of the Hudson river.
In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, say, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, New York is quite young. It was founded in 1613 by Dutch settlers.
There are five districts in the city: Manhattan, the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn and Richmond. Manhattan is the central and the oldest part of the city. It is the district of business and finance. It is here in Wall Street that many business offices, banks and the world famous New York stock exchange are situated. The New York stock exchange dominates business life of many countries.
The total area of New York is 365 square miles or 900 square kiloi letres. Its population together with the population of its suburbs amounts to 16 million people.
Among the inhabitants of New York one can meet people of almost all nationalities. They settled here during the immigration in the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century.
A traveller who visits New York for the first time wonders at the modern architecture. The Statue of Liberty, which is on Liberty Island, was a present from France in 1876 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of American independence. This statue and a few 18th and 19th century churches, hospitals, newspaper offices and other buildings are the only examples of «old» architecture in New York. Wherever your eyes travel, everywhere you can see sky-scrapers.

America gave the world a lot of great people, such as Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King. This list is endless. We should not forget about Christopher Columbus, because he had discovered this previously unknown continent.
A lot of cultures, mentalities and nations are intertwined in America. This has formed the current face of the country. Today, the US is a prosperous country, “the first economy of the world”. Many people want to go to the US to get an education, make a career, or just see this truly amazing place.
There are so many beautiful cities in America: big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami as well as little provincial towns. I want to pick out New York City among big cities. I associate New York with lots of yellow taxis on Times Square, crowds of people, who hurry somewhere and of course with skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty. Recently, I wanted to “taste “The Big Apple””. No matter how stupidly it sounds, this ambition appeared, when I was playing video game `Grand theft Auto IV`.
That would be so nice to wake up in the morning and go for a walk on Manhattan, visit the famous Wall Street, see Columbia University, stroll along Broadway, stare at the colorful advertising signs in Times Square. Then, we can go to Central Park for a walk, encountering running people in tracksuits, mummies with prams, people walking their dogs or to sit on green grass. After this we can pop to coffee shop and then go to Liberty Island where a statue with the same name is located, which has become a national symbol of America.
New York is the capital of American fashion. Fashion Weeks are held there. New York City is not only a big beautiful city, but it is one of the world economic centers. Also there is the headquarters of UN.
California will certainly leave nobody indifferent. San Francisco with Cable Cars and Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and high technologies, San Diego and its Zoo – that`s California.
There are most picturesque beaches of the West coast. I would be glad to be on of these beaches. Lying on golden sand and the sun gently caressing your skin, ocean softly roaring, boys and girls in swimsuits playing beach volleyball and the rescuers attentively watching over what is happening. California is an excellent place for surfing. I would take a lesson from local surfing instructors.
There is also Hollywood in the Golden State, it is the well-known suburbs of Los Angeles. Hollywood had discovered the world-famous stars like Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. It is noteworthy, that the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is actor too. By the way, I want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It is interesting, that there are two towns, which name is Washington, in America except the capital of the US. The capital of the US, Washington D.C., deserves attention too. What can I say about this city? The government of the USA is situated there and a number of government buildings, like United States Capitol, residence of president of the United States, the White House, and Supreme Court of the United States. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities of America. Architecture of US Capitol and Supreme Court of the US is amazing. In the US capital we can also see The Lincoln Memorial, inside which the statue of sixteenth president is located. You must see this.
United States of America is a truly great country, with special lifestyle, unique people and its own traditions. My cherished dream is to go there and learn how America really is.

Как было бы здорово проснуться утром и пойти гулять по Манхэттену, посетить знаменитую Уолл-стрит, посмотреть на Колумбийский университет, прогуляться по Бродвею, полюбоваться на цветастые вывески на Таймс-Сквер. Пройтись по Центральному парку, встречая на своём пути пробегающих мимо людей в спортивных костюмах, мамочек с колясками, людей, выгуливающих собак, или посидеть на зелёной травке. После можно забежать в кофейню, а затем отправиться на остров свободы, на котором находится одноимённая статуя, ставшая национальным символом Америки.
Нью-Йорк также является американской столицей моды. Там проводятся Недели Моды. Следует сказать о том, что Нью-Йорк – это не просто большой красивый город, а ещё и один из экономических центров мира. Также здесь расположена штаб-квартира ООН.
Калифорния наверняка не оставит никого равнодушным. Сан-Франциско со своими трамвайчиками и мостом “Золотые ворота”, Силиконовая долина с высокими технологиями, Сан-Диего со своим зоопарком – всё это Калифорния.
Именно там находятся самые живописные пляжи Западного побережья. Я был бы очень рад оказаться на одном из них. Лежишь на золотистом песке, а солнце нежно ласкает твою кожу, океан тихо шумит, парни и девушки в купальных костюмах играют в пляжный волейбол, спасатели на своих вышках внимательно следят за происходящим. Калифорния – превосходное место для занятий сёрфингом. Надо бы взять пару уроков у местных инструкторов.
Также в “Золотом штате” находится Голливуд, знаменитый район Лос-Анджелеса. Именно Голливуд открыл миру всемирно известных звёзд, среди которых можно выделить Одри Хепбёрн, Кирк Дуглас, Харрисон Форд, Мэрил Стрип. Примечательно, что губернатор Калифорнии, Арнольд Шварценеггер, тоже актёр. Кстати, обязательно надо посетить “Аллею славы”.
Очень интересен тот факт, что помимо столицы в Америке есть ещё два города с названием Вашингтон. Столица США, Вашингтон, тоже заслуживает внимания. Что же можно сказать о политическом центре страны? Там сосредоточено правительство и ряд правительственных зданий, таких, как Капитолий, резиденция президента США – Белый дом, Верховный суд США. Вашингтон – это один из красивейших городов Америки. Архитектура Капитолия и Верховного суда поражает воображение. Также в столице США можно увидеть мемориал Линкольна, в помещении которого находится статуя шестнадцатого президента. Это нужно видеть вживую.

It is because New York is the home of the United Nations and the largest investment market in the world. When first immigrants came to this land, they bought Manhattan Island for $24 from local Indians. Then they founded there a first colony and now when people in New York talking about New Yorkers they usually talk about people, who live on Manhattan.
New York has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. The Bronx is famous for a zoo, which is situated there. Manhattan is the center of New York City. Near 1 million people live here, but over than 5 million come here to work from all parts of the city every day. The main street, Broadway, is also here. And there are a lot of other famous streets which known nationwide. Wall Street is famous for finance. Madison Avenue means advertising, and Fifth Avenue is famous for world-class shopping. There is a famous crossing Times Square. It famous for Theatre district, there are more than thirty theaters there, and every evening they play their plays. Central Park is also there. There you can see people walking their dogs, having a rest or playing games.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great collection from all over the world. It’s located in Central Park. There are a lot of famous neighborhoods on Manhattan. The Village is famous for some poets and writers, who wrote about it. SoHo is an enclave of artists. Harlem has a priceless musical heritage. And the China Town with its main street – Canal.
Most of New York’s skyscrapers are located on the island of Manhattan. There are such buildings as Art Deco Chrysler Building and there were twin towers of the World Trade Center. One of the famous building in the world is the Statue of Liberty. It was built in 1886. It was a present from the people of France. About 12 million immigrants passed through New York when they came to America. When you come to New York by sea the first thing, which you will see it is the Statue of Liberty, America’s symbol of freedom!

Originally, New York was a city of Dutch colonists who had settled on the territory of local Indian tribes. There are two more world-famous streets — Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Broadway is the centre of the theatres and night life. It is known as “The Great White Way” because of the electric signs which turn night into day.
It is the city that never goes to sleep. Buses and sub-way run all night. There are many drugstores and restaurants which never close their doors. There are cinemas with films that start at midnight. Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club avenue.
New York is the largest port in America. More than half the trade of the United States goes through this city.
There are many places of interest in New York. They are: the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others. When you come to New York you see lots of cars, big and small, black and yellow, old and modem; you do not see any trees or flowers in the streets, but only cars. You’ll see and hear advertisements everywhere. There is no getting away from them. Advertisements fill the newspapers and cover the walls, they are on menu-cards and match-boxes, they are shouted through loud speakers and shown in the cinemas.

Speaking about New York one can’t but mention the outstanding role, the city plays, in the cultural life of the country. New York has many museums and art galleries which have collected works of art of many peoples and of all times. Many of them are on constant display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of Art.
Most of the theatres and cinemas are in or near Broadway, the longest street and the biggest shopping district in Мел York. The Metropolitan and Modern Arts Museums attract many visitors.

The US is state with rich cultural heritage and fascinating history. It has passed a long way of formation and has earned respect from other countries. During the Second World War the US had been a reliable support for the Soviet Union because it had helped much in the fight against the fascism.
America gave the world a lot of great people, such as Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King. This list is endless. We should not forget about Christopher Columbus, because he had discovered this previously unknown continent.
A lot of cultures, mentalities and nations are intertwined in America. This has formed the current face of the country. Today, the US is a prosperous country, “the first economy of the world”. Many people want to go to the US to get an education, make a career, or just see this truly amazing place.
There are so many beautiful cities in America: big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami as well as little provincial towns. I want to pick out New York City among big cities. I associate New York with lots of yellow taxis on Times Square, crowds of people, who hurry somewhere and of course with skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty. Recently, I wanted to “taste “The Big Apple””. No matter how stupidly it sounds, this ambition appeared, when I was playing video game `Grand theft Auto IV`.
That would be so nice to wake up in the morning and go for a walk on Manhattan, visit the famous Wall Street, see Columbia University, stroll along Broadway, stare at the colorful advertising signs in Times Square. Then, we can go to Central Park for a walk, encountering running people in tracksuits, mummies with prams, people walking their dogs or to sit on green grass. After this we can pop to coffee shop and then go to Liberty Island where a statue with the same name is located, which has become a national symbol of America.
New York is the capital of American fashion. Fashion Weeks are held there. New York City is not only a big beautiful city, but it is one of the world economic centers. Also there is the headquarters of UN.
California will certainly leave nobody indifferent. San Francisco with Cable Cars and Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and high technologies, San Diego and its Zoo – that`s California.
There are most picturesque beaches of the West coast. I would be glad to be on of these beaches. Lying on golden sand and the sun gently caressing your skin, ocean softly roaring, boys and girls in swimsuits playing beach volleyball and the rescuers attentively watching over what is happening. California is an excellent place for surfing. I would take a lesson from local surfing instructors.
There is also Hollywood in the Golden State, it is the well-known suburbs of Los Angeles. Hollywood had discovered the world-famous stars like Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. It is noteworthy, that the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is actor too. By the way, I want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It is interesting, that there are two towns, which name is Washington, in America except the capital of the US. The capital of the US, Washington D.C., deserves attention too. What can I say about this city? The government of the USA is situated there and a number of government buildings, like United States Capitol, residence of president of the United States, the White House, and Supreme Court of the United States. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities of America. Architecture of US Capitol and Supreme Court of the US is amazing. In the US capital we can also see The Lincoln Memorial, inside which the statue of sixteenth president is located. You must see this.
United States of America is a truly great country, with special lifestyle, unique people and its own traditions. My cherished dream is to go there and learn how America really is.

В Америке переплелись множество культур, наций, менталитетов, которые сформировали нынешний облик страны. Сегодня США – это процветающая страна, “первая экономика мира”. Многие люди стремятся попасть туда: получить образование, сделать карьеру или просто увидеть это поистине удивительное место.
Как много в Америке прекрасных городов. Как мегаполисов: Нью-Йорк, Лос-Анджелес, Майами, так и маленьких провинциальных городков. Среди больших городов хочется отметить Нью-Йорк. Нью-Йорк ассоциируется у меня с множеством жёлтых такси на Таймс-Сквер, толпами людей спешащих куда-то, ну и, конечно же, небоскрёбами и Статуей Свободы. Совсем недавно я загорелся желанием “попробовать “Большое яблоко” на вкус”. Как бы это глупо ни звучало, но это желание появилось у меня после того как я поиграл в игру Grand Theft Auto IV.
Как было бы здорово проснуться утром и пойти гулять по Манхэттену, посетить знаменитую Уолл-стрит, посмотреть на Колумбийский университет, прогуляться по Бродвею, полюбоваться на цветастые вывески на Таймс-Сквер. Пройтись по Центральному парку, встречая на своём пути пробегающих мимо людей в спортивных костюмах, мамочек с колясками, людей, выгуливающих собак, или посидеть на зелёной травке. После можно забежать в кофейню, а затем отправиться на остров свободы, на котором находится одноимённая статуя, ставшая национальным символом Америки.
Нью-Йорк также является американской столицей моды. Там проводятся Недели Моды. Следует сказать о том, что Нью-Йорк – это не просто большой красивый город, а ещё и один из экономических центров мира. Также здесь расположена штаб-квартира ООН.
Калифорния наверняка не оставит никого равнодушным. Сан-Франциско со своими трамвайчиками и мостом “Золотые ворота”, Силиконовая долина с высокими технологиями, Сан-Диего со своим зоопарком – всё это Калифорния.
Именно там находятся самые живописные пляжи Западного побережья. Я был бы очень рад оказаться на одном из них. Лежишь на золотистом песке, а солнце нежно ласкает твою кожу, океан тихо шумит, парни и девушки в купальных костюмах играют в пляжный волейбол, спасатели на своих вышках внимательно следят за происходящим. Калифорния – превосходное место для занятий сёрфингом. Надо бы взять пару уроков у местных инструкторов.
Также в “Золотом штате” находится Голливуд, знаменитый район Лос-Анджелеса. Именно Голливуд открыл миру всемирно известных звёзд, среди которых можно выделить Одри Хепбёрн, Кирк Дуглас, Харрисон Форд, Мэрил Стрип. Примечательно, что губернатор Калифорнии, Арнольд Шварценеггер, тоже актёр. Кстати, обязательно надо посетить “Аллею славы”.
Очень интересен тот факт, что помимо столицы в Америке есть ещё два города с названием Вашингтон. Столица США, Вашингтон, тоже заслуживает внимания. Что же можно сказать о политическом центре страны? Там сосредоточено правительство и ряд правительственных зданий, таких, как Капитолий, резиденция президента США – Белый дом, Верховный суд США. Вашингтон – это один из красивейших городов Америки. Архитектура Капитолия и Верховного суда поражает воображение. Также в столице США можно увидеть мемориал Линкольна, в помещении которого находится статуя шестнадцатого президента. Это нужно видеть вживую.
Соединённые Штаты Америки поистине великая страна, с особым укладом жизни, с уникальными людьми и своими традициями. Моя заветная мечта – побывать там и узнать о том, какая она, настоящая Америка.

New York City isn’t the capital of USA and it isn’t the capital of New York State, but residents of the “Big Apple” considering their city the capital of the globe. It is because New York is the home of the United Nations and the largest investment market in the world. When first immigrants came to this land, they bought Manhattan Island for $24 from local Indians. Then they founded there a first colony and now when people in New York talking about New Yorkers they usually talk about people, who live on Manhattan.
New York has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx. The Bronx is famous for a zoo, which is situated there. Manhattan is the center of New York City. Near 1 million people live here, but over than 5 million come here to work from all parts of the city every day. The main street, Broadway, is also here. And there are a lot of other famous streets which known nationwide. Wall Street is famous for finance. Madison Avenue means advertising, and Fifth Avenue is famous for world-class shopping. There is a famous crossing Times Square. It famous for Theatre district, there are more than thirty theaters there, and every evening they play their plays. Central Park is also there. There you can see people walking their dogs, having a rest or playing games.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great collection from all over the world. It’s located in Central Park. There are a lot of famous neighborhoods on Manhattan. The Village is famous for some poets and writers, who wrote about it. SoHo is an enclave of artists. Harlem has a priceless musical heritage. And the China Town with its main street – Canal.
Most of New York’s skyscrapers are located on the island of Manhattan. There are such buildings as Art Deco Chrysler Building and there were twin towers of the World Trade Center. One of the famous building in the world is the Statue of Liberty. It was built in 1886. It was a present from the people of France. About 12 million immigrants passed through New York when they came to America. When you come to New York by sea the first thing, which you will see it is the Statue of Liberty, America’s symbol of freedom!
