    Part 1. Famous and Strange
Let us start with her character. It was strange that being so famous, she didn’t like it, on the contrary she avoided publicity and never gave speeches in public. By nature Agatha Christie was a very shy and reserved person and only close people could understand her complex personality.
In her childhood Agatha Christie was kind of slow-witted and hardly could express her feelings. When her mother noticed this strange peculiarity of her daughter’s character, she tried to get her into music. It worked. She played the piano very well but for the same reason she would never become a professional pianist. Even small audiences made Christie freeze up when playing the piano.
Growing older she didn’t change. The incident that happened to her at the age of 72 proves that fact. In 1962 she was invited to a party organized in her honor. It was the celebration of the 10th anniversary of her play “The Mousetrap”, which took place in London, in Savoy Hotel. But when the doorman, not knowing her personally, refused to let her in, Agatha Christie just sadly turned away and went home. As the guest of honor didn’t appear, the party was a failure. It is believed that Christie may have suffered from a chronic form of a mental disorder, called agoraphobia. This illness creates a great fear of public places.

    Part 2. Adventurous and Brilliant
Christie was born in an upper class family at Torquay, Devonshire. All her childhood she spent in a large villa on the English seashore. She was very happy as a child.
Little Agatha was allowed to do what she wanted and she often amazed family with her actions. Once, at a very young age, she persuaded her brother to go out to sea on a sailboat. At the age of 6, she climbed out the 4th floor window and walked along the foot-wide ledge.
In 1911, at the age of 21, she went up in an airplane, which was a new invention for that time. Despite her public shyness, Agatha was adventurous and brave.
Agatha got home education, which was common for the young women during the Victorian era. Agatha was a brilliant pupil, she demonstrated excellent abilities in mathematics, logic, and music. Later her mother sent her to Paris to take singing lessons. But Agatha didn’t have friends and was often lonely. Having nobody to speak to, she talked… to trees in her garden and the imaginary creatures who lived in it.
When Agatha grew up and turned into a tall slim blonde. Young men found her very charming and she had had many admirers before she finally married. She started writing stories at a young age competing with her mother, who also had such a hobby. When Agatha’s father died at an early age, the family got into money difficulties. And Agatha thought that she would earn money for her family, writing books. She signed her first publishing contract at the age of 29. As a result she became a famous writer, who knows whether it would be possible in other circumstances.

    Part 3. Married and Divorced
Agatha married Archie Christie in 1914 and took his last name. Twelve years she lived rather happily but in the year of 1926 the misfortune started. First Agatha’s mother died. Hardly could she recover from her grief, the same year her husband announced that he was going to divorce her and marry their mutual friend, Nancy Neele. Agatha went through a bitter divorce and, as a result, became very depressed and mentally exhausted. These two events influenced her greatly and soon after that she disappeared. Her car was found outside London and the police started searching the ponds for her body but 11 days later she was discovered staying at a hotel in the north of England, under the name of Teresa Neele.
She said that she remembered nothing only that she had been in a car accident, though there was no any sign of damage to her car. The doctors suggested that she had an amnesia but everybody thought that it was a lie. The last name Neele that she had used in the hotel appeared on the front pages of every newspaper in England. It was the name of the woman that her husband wanted to marry.
Christie didn’t like to remember that incident, and it only increased her hatred for the press for the rest of her life.
Despite the divorce, Agatha Christie was still the center of attention with men. And, at the age of 40, Agatha married Macmillian Mallown, who was 15 years younger than she. This marriage appeared to be arranged in heaven. They were madly happy. Her second husband adored her and they spent almost every day together. He was an archeologist and Agatha followed him to Egypt and other countries, helping him to arrange artefacts and make excavations. She was very worried that she would probably die earlier and it really happened. He lived rather lonely till the end of his life.

Part 4. The Secret of Christie’s Popularity
You still wonder why books by Agatha Christie have become so popular among many people of different nationalities? Here are some ideas.
First of all, she had a genius for constructing complex plots. She had no difficulties to find ideas for her novels. On the contrary, she would have 5 different stories in mind at the same time, and it took her much effort to concentrate on one of them.
Secondly, Christie had a genius to create her great detective Poirot in her first novel. He has became one of the most popular private detectives since Sherlock. He has an image of a funny little man, with an egghead and moustache. By the way, it is strange that Christie never mentioned his nation, his family and class.
Agatha Christie became well-known in 1926 after the publishing of her novel «The murder of Roger Acroyd». It is still considered her masterpiece. She was very creative and wrote at least one novel a year for the rest of her life. When Christie got tired of Poirot, she invented Miss Marple, an old lady with her own method of investigation.
The plots of her books always keep the reader in suspense because till the last page he cannot guess who the criminal is. Agatha Christie’s language is rather simple and language students are usually advised to read her books in the original.

  5. Agatha Christie’s books are so popular among readers of all ages that the number of her sold books can compete only the Bible and William Shakespeare’s works.
The famous writer was born on 15 September 1890 in Torquay, Devon (UK) in the Millers family. Christie is the surname of her first husband, not a pseudonym. Millers were wealthy migrants from the United States. All three children of the family got a very good education at home, including musical one. Unfortunately, Agatha had a strong fear of the stage and it prevented her from becoming a good musician.
This woman created the most popular characters in the world of crime market – Monsieur Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. In numerous books they were investigating crimes and demonstrated a sharp mind, nontrivial point of view and other talents of a true detective. The audience loved these characters as if they were real people. When Poirot died in one of the books, the newspaper had posted his obituary.

Agatha Christie was born at Torquay, Devonshire. She was educated at home and took singing lessons in Paris. She began writing at the end of the First World War. Her, first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, was published in 1920. That was the first appearance of Hercule Poirot, who became one of the most popular private detectives since Sherlock Holmes. This little Belgian with the egg-shaped head and the passion for order amazes everyone by his powerful intellect and is brilliant solutions to the most complicated crimes.
Agatha Christie became generally recognised in 1926, after the publishing of her novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It’s still considered her masterpiece. When Agatha Cristie got tired of Hercule Poirot she invented Miss Marple, a deceptively mild old lady with her own method of investigation. Agatha Christie’s success with millions of readers lies in her ability to combine clever plots with excellent character drawing, and a keen sense of humour with great powers of observation. 10.
Agatha Christie was sure the world’s best-selling crime writer. Moreover, she was an immensely prolific writer. 79 shot stories, 4 non-fiction ones and 19 plays were written by that strange woman. They were translated into 136 languages. Over 3 billion books by Agatha Christie were sold worldwide. She is popular for ingenuity of plots, which are classical murder mysteries: crimson places and a well-mannered murderer. Her way to present the stories was quite different from that of her colleagues. In the first place, her stories appealed to the readers inside, so you can’t find much blood and violence in her stories.
Agatha Christie created two major characters for her stories. Hercule Poirot, a Belgian, used to work in the Police, but by the time of the action he already retired. He can be described as a funny little man taken by many readers as a comic personage. He had a luxurious moustache and he was really proud of it.
Miss Marple was the complete opposite of Poirot. She wasn’t a professional and had never been one. She was just an old spinster, very modest but perceptive and not a flamboyant personality, who acted as a detective just by virtue of taking thought.
Agatha Christie’s favourite way of murdering was poisoning. She accurately described the process because she had learned a lot about poisons and other chemicals during World War II, while working in a hospital.
The reader has to solve the mystery and decide who the murderer is together with the author. Most of the crimes were committed in some closed surroundings with a limited number of people to suspect. Finally the identity of the murderer is revealed and the reader is hooked and starts looking for another book by Agatha Christie.
Agatha Christie lived between 1890 and 1976. She started writing stories at a very early age, at first to entertain herself. However, she managed to become famous. Not many people know that she used to write under a pen-name of Mary Westmacott. Later, already as a world-known writer, she tried to avoid publicity and stayed out of the public eye.

Agatha Christie was one of England’s most famous writers. Her crime and detective stories became famous for their clever plots. Agatha Christie was often called the queen of crime.
Agatha Christie was born in Devon, England in 1890 as the daughter of a British army captain. During the First World War she worked in a hospital as a nurse. Later on she got a job in a pharmacy. This influenced many of her crime stories because some of her victims were poisoned.
Agatha Christie was married twice and especially her second husband travelled a lot with her. Some of her novels, like “Death on the Nile” were set in the Middle East. “Murder on the Orient Express” was written in Istanbul.
At the beginning of the 1970s Agatha Christie became ill, but she went on writing. When she died in 1976 she had written over 60 novels, 150 short stories and 16 plays. Her stage play “The Mousetrap” is the longest running play in history. It was first performed in 1952 and after a record 23,000 performances it is still running today.
Many of Christie’s books and short stories have been turned into successful movies.
    Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple
In her works Agatha Christie created two great characters. Hercule Poirot is a Belgian detective who appeared in 33 of Agatha Christie’s novels. He his best known for his moustache. Poirot thinks logically and likes order. He examines the crime scene in detail and claims that every crime can be solved.
As time went on Agatha Christie became tired of her Belgian detective and wanted to get rid of him. But he was very popular among her readers. When he died in “Curtain” in 1978 he became the only fictional character to get an obituary in the New York Times.
Agatha Christie’s other well-known character was Miss Marple, an old woman who wants to be an amateur detective. She likes knitting, walking around the neighbourhood and she observes things very carefully. She became famous for solving cases where the police failed. In contrast to Hercule Poirot, Christie was very fond of Miss Marple.
    Plots
Almost all of Agatha Christie’s novels are whodunits. They focus on English people of the middle and upper classes.
Usually the detective comes across a murder scene by chance or is called by a friend who may be involved. He or she questions the suspects, examines the crime scene carefully and gives the reader clues so that they may have a chance to solve the crime themselves. In the course of the story one, or even a few, of the suspects usually die.
Finally the detective gets all the suspects together and gives away information that not everyone knows, until the real murderer is revealed.
In some of Agatha Christie’s stories the murderer escapes justice; sometimes they get killed. Twice the murderer turns out to be the narrator of the story.
