“Books and friends should be few but good,” says an English proverb. “Except a living man there is nothing more wonderful than a book! It is a friend and a teacher. We learn many things by reading books. Books teach people to live. After reading some books it is easy to understand what should be done and what must not be done. One can learn a lot by reading books.
Different people like to read different kinds of books. It depends on one’s taste and character. Some people prefer detectives or science fiction. Others like historical books. Girls and women prefer love stories. Children like comics very much.
When you read books you find your selves in different lands. Together with the characters of the books you climb high mountains, go by ship in the stormy sea, fly into space. In a ward, you have a lot of adventures.

As opposed to computers books are portable and you can enjoy reading even in public transport.
Though I’m not a bookworm I like to spend my free time reading a good book. I’m fond of reading because it provides a lot of space for imagination: I like to conjure the characters and how they look like, I always try to predict how I would behave if I were in the shoes of this or that character. When I read a book I usually entirely immerse myself into it; I live in this imaginary world and enjoy it.

I am a bookworm, too. I have a very big collection of different books at home. Here you can find works of different authors: both classic and modern. There are even works of the ancient authors like Homer, for example. My grandmother began to collect books so she is a founder of our home library. I keep collecting books. As different members of our family take part in filling of our home library, it contains books of different genres.

There are fiction and non-Fiction books. Fiction books are thought up by authors though they can be based on true events. Non-Fiction books contain real facts.
Fiction literature offers a great variety of genres to readers: romance, historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, fables, fairy-tales, drama, poetry. Non-Fiction includes biographies and autobiographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs. Every reader has his favourite genre corresponding to his taste and character.
Why Do People Read?
People read books because they are a valuable source of information and knowledge. Studying is one of the main reasons why people read books. It is impossible to imagine modern school without books.
The programme material is contained mostly in textbooks. Reading develops mind and thinking abilities. Books consider the eternal questions of life, so they help us in everyday situations and stimulate our self-perfection.
My Favourite Book
One of my favourite books is “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway. The fisherman Santiago is very devoted to the sea where he has been fishing since his early days. He has always been prepared for the battle with a big fish.
The battle is dangerous and hard but the old man morally wins the battle. His words “man can be destroyed but not defeated” are the main idea of Hemingway’s masterpiece. This book inspires me greatly especially at the most difficult moments of my life. Isn’t it the value of literature?

Nowadays it’s
almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps,
there are more books on our planet than men alive.
Long before the
invention of printing people valued books as treasure troves of
the human knowledge and experience. Hand — written manuscripts
took months of writing and were collected by and kept in
monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between
three classes of them.
Firstly, books on
different branches of knowledge, works by brilliant minds of
mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous
dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read
at leisure.
Classics should
be taken a little at a time. One’s understanding of books by
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one’s
age and experience.
Serious books are
to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a
thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every
time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science
fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often
reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good
science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical
thinking, broader one’s outlook.
The same could be
said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute
details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces
of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of
psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying
goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of
knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can

На мой взгляд, хорошая фантастика
развивает воображение, логическое мышление, расширяет кругозор.
То же самое может быть сказано в
защиту детективов. Они описывают такие мелкие детали
повседневной жизни той или иной страны, которые очень интересны
любопытному читателю. Шедевры этого жанра сэра Артура Конан

анализа, проникновения в человеческую натуру.
Как говорится в старой пословице, не
хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство
самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые
жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом.

You and characters of books can find yourselves in different countries and have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of our favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, to be true friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them to us. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland.
Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read «Alice in the Wonderland», «Mowgli»? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island?
I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is «The Adventures of Tom Sawyer» by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides, he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends.
If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it in a library and read it. Books are worth reading. Really, they are our good friends.
Books stay with us during the whole life: in babyhood we hear parents read us fairy tales, in our teens we swallow exciting suspense novels page after page and when we become adults we still find gripping books that absorb us.
But today many people say that modern life is so fast and full of action that they don’t have time and desire to read books; they consider reading to be nothing more than waste of time. Furthermore there are a lot of people who are sure that products of modern technologies like computers can replace traditional books.
Nevertheless, there still exist people, who receive pleasure from the special atmosphere that books create and who believe that books will never disappear from their lives. They feel certain that books teach us what is right and what is wrong; they enrich the inner world of a reader and certainly entertain him. As opposed to computers books are portable and you can enjoy reading even in public transport.
Though I’m not a bookworm I like to spend my free time reading a good book. I’m fond of reading because it provides a lot of space for imagination: I like to conjure the characters and how they look like, I always try to predict how I would behave if I were in the shoes of this or that character. When I read a book I usually entirely immerse myself into it; I live in this imaginary world and enjoy it.

My name is Anastasia. I’m fourteen years old. I’m fond of reading. Books take an important place in my life. I was taught to like and take care of books from the childhood. I find out much new, useful and interesting information from books. They teach me to take right decisions and apprehend school subjects better. I can find an answer to any interesting question in books. I get knowledge from them. I like to read books about the Middle Ages and also I like historical and fantastic works. I plunge into another world at once. Also I like scientific stories about animals and plants. The book is a medicine for soul. When I finish reading of a good book I always feel upset because of its fast end. One famous writer said that books are our friends. I completely agree with him. It seems to me that books take an important place in our life and they are necessary for everybody.

It is definitely hard to imagine our life without books. I think it is one of the best inventions of the mankind. Many people all over the world like reading books. They often visit book shops and libraries and always find there something new and interesting. Such people who cannot imagine their lives without books are called bookworms.

I am a bookworm, too. I have a very big collection of different books at home. Here you can find works of different authors: both classic and modern. There are even works of the ancient authors like Homer, for example. My grandmother began to collect books so she is a founder of our home library. I keep collecting books. As different members of our family take part in filling of our home library, it contains books of different genres.

There are fiction and non-Fiction books. Fiction books are thought up by authors though they can be based on true events. Non-Fiction books contain real facts.
Fiction literature offers a great variety of genres to readers: romance, historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, fables, fairy-tales, drama, poetry. Non-Fiction includes biographies and autobiographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs. Every reader has his favourite genre corresponding to his taste and character.
Why Do People Read?
People read books because they are a valuable source of information and knowledge. Studying is one of the main reasons why people read books. It is impossible to imagine modern school without books.
The programme material is contained mostly in textbooks. Reading develops mind and thinking abilities. Books consider the eternal questions of life, so they help us in everyday situations and stimulate our self-perfection.
My Favourite Book
One of my favourite books is “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway. The fisherman Santiago is very devoted to the sea where he has been fishing since his early days. He has always been prepared for the battle with a big fish.
The battle is dangerous and hard but the old man morally wins the battle. His words “man can be destroyed but not defeated” are the main idea of Hemingway’s masterpiece. This book inspires me greatly especially at the most difficult moments of my life. Isn’t it the value of literature?

Books… I think that we can’t live without them. I consider that books are with us during all our life. When I was a child my parents read them to me. I was pleased to listen to the stories and tales. I learned a lot of interesting things from books. I remember, I liked thick books. Later I could read myself. I like to read books about animals, nature and children. I like to get presents on my birthday. I am happy if it is a book. It doesn’t matter what kind of book it is. I like to read almost all books. If I have got time I like to spend it with my favourite book. When I was fifteen I was fond of reading too.
But I preferred to read books about travels. I travelled with the heroes of the stories. I saw many interesting places and learned a lot of important facts about other countries and people. Now I like to read books on science. You can learn many things from books. I am sure that books play a very important role in my life. Our family has got many books. All the members of our family buy books and read them. My mother says that books help us in self-education. In ancient times books were written by hand. It was difficult to write a book with a pen. Then printing came into our life. Printing played an important role in the development of literature and culture. Now there are a lot of books in the shops, there are many books in our flats. But it is difficult to buy all books which we want to read. That’s why we get books in public libraries. There are some problems in our life and sometimes it is difficult to solve them. I think that books can help us. Last year I read a very interesting book “An American Tragedy” by Theodore Dreiser. This novel was published at the beginning of the 20th century. The novel describes the tragic fate of a boy and a girl, Clyde and Roberta by name. It is a sad story. This novel was written many years ago, but it is popular nowadays. Books must be our friends during all our life.

Books in Our Life
Nowadays it’s
almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps,
there are more books on our planet than men alive.
Long before the
invention of printing people valued books as treasure troves of
the human knowledge and experience. Hand — written manuscripts
took months of writing and were collected by and kept in
monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between
three classes of them.
Firstly, books on
different branches of knowledge, works by brilliant minds of
mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous
dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read
at leisure.
Classics should
be taken a little at a time. One’s understanding of books by
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one’s
age and experience.
Serious books are
to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a
thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every
time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science
fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often
reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good
science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical
thinking, broader one’s outlook.
The same could be
said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute
details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces
of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of
psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying
goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of
knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can
help us. Books must be our friends during all our life.

На мой взгляд, хорошая фантастика
развивает воображение, логическое мышление, расширяет кругозор.
То же самое может быть сказано в
защиту детективов. Они описывают такие мелкие детали
повседневной жизни той или иной страны, которые очень интересны
любопытному читателю. Шедевры этого жанра сэра Артура Конан
Дойла, Агаты Кристи и других показывают глубины психологического
анализа, проникновения в человеческую натуру.
Как говорится в старой пословице, не
хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство
самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые
жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом.
Книги должны быть нашими друзьями на протяжении всей жизни.
