Among the most urgent social problems of modern world is discrimination. Discrimination is treating someone in a worse way than other people for some reasons. And there are many types of it.
For example, discrimination of disabled people. Nowadays there are not so many jobs that these people can do. Companies often refuse to give jobs to them because it is not comfortable or they can spoil the image of the firm. There is also sex discrimination. For example often women can’t get a good job or in some countries they get less money than men. Young women can’t often get a job because the employer thinks they are going to get pregnant soon. Or in the opposite, some jobs are only given to young and pretty girls and then they come across the cases of sexual harassment. In some countries women and men don’t have equal rights.
The most often cases of discrimination is racism and religion discrimination. There are so many conflicts happening around the world because of skin colour. People fight and even kill each other just because they have different colour of skin. I think this is very stupid, it doesn’t have any sense, such people don’t fight to freedom or some ideas, they just behave in a foolish way. They are very limited in their world perception and understanding.
The same is with religion discrimination. Every country has its own religion, which is considered the main. But there are also people who have other beliefs and they also have the right to exist in the same state and have equal rights.
So I think discrimination is something that humiliates all the people — the ones who are discriminated as well as those who discriminate.

  2. Discrimination Essay, Research Paper
Discrimination You see it everyday, people treating each other as though we are not all equals. As though we are not all human. Discrimination! Whether it is on the street or on the job, you see it everywhere. There is discrimination against the mentally and physically challenged, against people of different cultures, and people of the opposite sex, just to name a few. A co-worker of mine shared a story with me about when she was in 3rd grade, in Kansas City, Kansas. She remembers being on the playground with the rest of the kids and seeing the special ed kids come out to play. But you could tell them apart from the rest of the kids because they were made to wear red vests any time they were outdoors. She believed this was so the teachers could tell them apart from the rest of the kids. But she also remembers when the other students saw these red vests they all chanted, Special Ed in the red. All of the kids would stay on the opposite side of the playground as the Special Ed kids. Many people don t realize the affect that this type of treatment may have on a person. Now some of these Special Ed students may not realize what is going on, but many of them do. To think that this kind of treatment was allowed. Another thing mentioned was that when a student was in trouble for wrong doing, that student was sent to the Special Ed Room for the day as their punishment. So they believed it was a punishment to have to be in Special Ed. All types of discrimination are wrong, but to discriminate against those who for the most part cannot defend themselves is worse. Another type of discrimination is discrimination against people of different cultural backgrounds. The team leader at my job is a black woman. She lives in my hometown, Knoxville. She moved to Knoxville in about 6th grade with her mom, dad, and a younger brother and sister. When she moved to small town Knoxville, there were no blacks, at least no young ones. So the school system was completely white students. Coming from a very culturally mixed school, this was a culture shock to her. Her first day of school was a new experience for her. She had some girls trying to be her friend. But she had her first encounter with racism. She was catching a lot of racial slurs. By mid afternoon she had had enough of this school. She decided she was never coming back. She was walking down the hall, and she saw her younger sister being picked on. Her sister had her hair in little braids, and the boy who was picking on her grabbed her by her braids and told her she was just a Niger, and she didn t belong there. Well the two sisters ended up in the office, but the white boy got to return to class. The girls mom was called and brought in. As soon as the mother confronted the principal, she was told that their family was in fact Niger s and they might as well get used to it. You think they had enough, but they stayed there. Shortly after all this, the younger of the sisters was riding her bike around the block that she lived on. On the other side of the block from them, a man saw the little girl riding and pulled a gun on her and started calling her obscene names telling her to get back home. The girl, scared to death, went home and told her parents about the incident, and the police were called. The only thing the police said to the man with the gun was that he shouldn t be doing that to little kids, sort of a slap on the hand. I believe that someday everyone will realize that all people are equal, regardless of race, color, or background. Until then people who have never done a terrible thing to others in their whole life will get discriminated against, just because they are not exactly the same as another human.
Another example of discrimination is sexual discrimination. In the workplace and in sports are two popular places you see this. Many women get discriminated against. They get told they are not big enough for the job, or it is a job for men. Also for sports, women get told that it is a sport for men, like football and wrestling to name a few. Woman will get injured in a man s sport. I remember when I was in 7th grade; I wanted to try out for wrestling. I thought, if men can do it then why can t women. I had seen girls from other schools wrestling, and I thought it was a good idea. I no more than asked the coach when I got denied. He said that wrestling wasn t a place for girls, which is what I expected to hear. I argued for a few weeks, but at that age I didn t want to make a big fuss about it, so I dropped it. Today I notice many women in wrestling. So it looks like the world is starting to slowly accept women in men s sports. On the flip side men may get discriminated against also. A man may try to get a job in a female dominated environment. He may get denied the job because of other reasons but really because he is male. I personally don t think there are as many examples for sexual discrimination against men as there is for women. But all in all both men and women do get discriminated against for their sex. God created all men and woman equal, it is just taking us a long time to realize it. Someday all people will realize this, and when they do, this world will be a better place to live. Discrimination will never go away completely but if more people in this world would look at each other as human and equals, it would make living for many a lot easier and happier.

  3. Our nowadays’ society is ruled by adults and it seems like the whole system works just for those who are older than twenty and younger than fifty. Ageism has become another form of discrimination, and although for most of us it does not seem as dreadful as, for instance, prejudice based on racial or gender differences, its silent existence spoils our life. It is a very complex problem and definitely not easy to overcome. It runs through the whole social system, and the first step to solving it should be a change in our own perception of age.
On the one hand, it seems quite easy to change one’s attitude to the problem of age. We all were at one point young and we all will be at one point old and retired. But on the other hand, this kind of age perception has been implemented in our minds for years, and all the laws and policies just contribute to this kind of negative attitude. Thus, for example, if we take a look at the elderly people in European countries, we will notice that most of them are quite positive about their life in general and some even think that their life has just started. However, in our country it is exactly the opposite – people perceive retirement as the end of their lives. And those who are under age are entirely dependent on their parents, lacking an opportunity to at least partially fend for themselves. And, moreover, employers tend to abuse the rights of teenage workers by paying them much less than adults.
In my opinion, the reason for such a difference is in the financial situation. So, the subsistence level for younger and older people is much lower than for adults, and employment opportunities are also quite scarce. These are the two problems which should be solved. First of all, the subsistence level should be made equal with that of adults, and, second of all, there should be changes in legislation: employers who refuse to hire a worker on the grounds of his/her age should be fined.
To conclude the above mentioned, I would like to emphasise that there are several steps to be taken in solution of the ageism problem: the younger and the older should be made equal in their rights with adults by law; they should be given more employment opportunities according to their professionalism but not the age. Finally and most importantly, our own attitude towards age should change.

  4. Robert Francis, Fair and Unfair: “The beautiful is fair. The just is fair. Yet one is commonplace and one is rare, One everywhere, one scarcely anywhere. So fair unfair a world. Had we the wit To use the surplus for the deficit, We`d make a fairer world of it”.
Our life is closely connected to survival. And survival, in its turn, – to competition. But if we were equal, there would be no point to compete. Some people are always better than others. But it is not so important as everybody will finally die.
Life is not fair. It is like playing cards. Some people have a really good hand, so they have great chances to win. Some people have a terrible hand thus they are doomed to failure. Still if you lose this game, you can always as for a second round. The game of life does not give you such an honor.
When we talk about survival, we should talk not only about genetics, but also about the environment that influence this factor that makes people be the way they are now. Here we should mention different kinds of discrimination: racial discrimination, sexual, job, age, religious, social and other kinds of discrimination. There is a quotation of Martin Luther, German Leader of the Protestant Reforma (1483-1546): “An earthly kingdom cannot exist without inequality of persons. Some must be free, some serfs, some rulers, some subjects”.
Describing racial discrimination, we should say that people have always considered representatives with fair complexion to be better than those with dark skin. It is a great prejudice that being born black means to be born a “slave”. Fortunately, some people tend to break these stereotypes; they struggle for recognition. For example, people with black skin are good at playing basketball, their music is known all over the world, and there are a lot of gifted black-skinned actors who regularly steal the show.
In Russia people from China, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and other Oriental countries are prejudiced greatly.
Another inequality is age discrimination. While in Europe people under fifty have all the chances to restart their lives, to receive education, get married or just travel – it is considered to be quite normal. While in Russia it is frowned upon. People under fifty should think about their old age and how to earn money to pay their bills. The older people become, the less chances for gaining something new in life they have. Besides, for example, in Russia people under their thirty five have problems to change a job or to find a new one.
Especially women experience such a problem. It is called sex discrimination. In some firms it is impossible for women to have a career development. Or their male colleagues have higher salaries being at the same position. It is not surprising that such phenomenon as feminism inexorably spreads all over the World.
Sex discrimination is especially common for Muslim and Arabian countries. Women in these countries have a lot of different prohibitions. As Enid Bagnold, British Novelist, Playwright (1889-1981) said: “Sex is the great inequality, the great miscalculator, the great Irritator”. And it is true.
So we can say that injustice is everywhere. Life is endless, peace in the whole World is impossible, and mud will never turn into gold.
There is unequally in the educational system. In some countries education is very expensive so that not everyone can afford it. The same situation exists with the medical care, when people die because they simply have mo money for appropriate medical treatment.
Somebody is born to be rich, somebody – to be poor, somebody is born to be happy but silly, somebody – poor but smart. And wise versa. There can be a lot of different variations.
Some people are handsome, some are not. Some people are mentally or physically ill, some are lucky to be healthy. Some people grow up in children`s homes, some have loving families. Some people live in luxurious mansions located on the ocean’s beach and enjoy their lives. And some people even have no roofs over their heads.
Contradiction is everywhere. “Some will always be above others. Destroy the inequality today, and it will appear again tomorrow”, – Ralph Waldo Emerson, American Poet, Essayist (1803-1882). Such is the truth of our life.
Some people may seem to be the minions of fortune, and some have to do their best to achieve something in life.
Somebody has an incurable disease but dreams to reach a success in life, contribute to the history of mankind, or just do something good for his or her family or other people. Somebody was given everything for that purpose except the wish to care about people.
However, there is another great quotation, and I fully agree with it. “There is no good in living in a society where you are merely the equal of everybody else. The true pleasure of life is to live with your inferiors”, – William M. Thackeray, Indian-born British Novelist (1811-1863). We all are individuals with an individual destiny. May be we cannot make our marks on history of the World, but we can make it on history of our family, the people who we love and care. And may be, if we look upon the problem of unfairness from the other point of view, it would not seem so frightening. May be our mote should be like: “Well, I do not have THIS, but I have THAT. I am not THIS kind of person, but I am ANOTHER kind. I AM an individual”. I suppose we should always see all the pluses and positive moments in our life and be grateful for it. And maybe then life will not seem so unfair. I suppose this choice is up to everyone. For me, life is life, maybe it is not fully fair at some points, but still, it is quite good. We are already lucky because we were selected to come into the world. Is not it the first our fairness? – I suppose, it is.

  6. For some people, [i] life success lies primarily in the family’s income. For others — something quite different. They are alien to money problems. They are passionate about their work and find peace of mind in completely different values. And it is also a kind of “life success.” In my view, it is enclosed in a set of moral satisfaction, peace of mind and physical well-being. Only with the combination of these benefits a person can feel happy and then his head free from everyday worries, he does not have to think about the “daily bread.” He has a desire to work, implement good ideas. And it’s not just a career, but personal happiness. A person who has your favorite job and is making progress or has admirers of his talent, without a home can not be fully satisfied with life. Only family well can make a person truly happy. Such people have a success in life is associated with warmth, positive energy, obtained in the family. But success in life at the same time as the tape: one lucky, others not. On the other hand, the man is the creator of his own happiness. Each must be persistence, patience, and most importantly — the desire to achieve something in life. Maybe with my point of view, many will disagree, perhaps, for their success in life — something completely different. But this one can be answered: “How many people, so many opinions.”

  7. Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another — or the belief that another person is less than human — because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes.
Racism on the part of Western powers toward non-Westerners has had a far more significant impact on history than any other form of racism (such as racism among Western groups or among Easterners, such as Asians, Africans, and others). The most notorious example of racism by the West has been slavery, particularly the enslavement of Africans in the New World (slavery itself dates back thousands of years). This enslavement was accomplished because of the racist belief that Black Africans were less fully human than white Europeans and their descendants.
This belief was not “automatic”: that is, Africans were not originally considered inferior. When Portuguese sailors first explored Africa in the 15th and 16th centuries, they came upon empires and cities as advanced as their own, and they considered Africans to be serious rivals. Over time, though, as African civilizations failed to match the technological advances of Europe, and the major European powers began to plunder the continent and forcibly remove its inhabitants to work as slave laborers in new colonies across the Atlantic, Africans came to be seen as a deficient “species,” as “savages.” To an important extent, this view was necessary to justify the slave trade at a time when Western culture had begun to promote individual rights and human equality. The willingness of some Africans to sell other Africans to European slave traders also led to claims of savagery.
One important feature of racism, especially toward Blacks and immigrant groups, is clear in attitudes regarding slaves and slavery. Jews are usually seen by anti-Semites as subhuman but also superhuman: devilishly cunning, skilled, and powerful. Blacks and others are seen by racists as merely subhuman, more like beasts than men. If the focus of anti-Semitism is evil, the focus of racism is inferiority — directed toward those who have sometimes been considered to lack even the ability to be evil (though in the 20th century, especially, victims of racism are often considered morally degraded).
All of these arguments are based on a false understanding of race; in fact, contemporary scientists are not agreed on whether race is a valid way to classify people. Skin color, hair, facial shape – are not of much scientific significance.

  8. Racism Essay, Research Paper
    Racism
    What is racism?
Racism is the mistreatment of a group of people on the basis of race, colour, and religion. The term racism may also mean a blind and pointless hatred, envy or prejudice.
Some expressions of racism are obvious, such as graffiti, intimidation or abuse.
Racial and ethnic slurs or “jokes” are other examples of obvious racial discrimination. But these are often ignored because people do not know how to deal with them.
Other expressions of racism are subtler, such as discrimination in offering jobs, letting flats and admission to clubs.
What is meant by discrimination? stereotype? prejudice?
DISCRIMINATION is the denial of equality based on personal characteristics, such as race and colour. Discrimination is usually based on prejudice and stereotypes.
STEREOTYPE means “set image”. When applied to people, stereotyping refers to forming an instant or fixed idea of a group of people, usually based on false or incomplete information. They are often negative.
PREJUDICE literally means to “prejudge” based on ideas that are formed without any knowledge about others. It is difficult to prevent prejudice attitudes.
What are the effects of racial discrimination?
Racism can leave people with their insides burnt out, with no self confidence and this makes them slip lower and lower down, until there is no where else to go, by no fault of their own. This can destroy families and whole communities.
If people are physically abused it can leave a mark not only on the outside but also on the inside, where it matters most.
What can be done to prevent racial discrimination in school?
? Refuse to listen or tell racist jokes and insults.
? Organise poster or essay competitions in school.
? Watch and discuss videos on discrimination and racism.
? Find out about human rights groups, and what they do to change peoples view.
? Develop a class policy against all forms of discrimination.
    Conclusion
I personally think that racism is foolish. People should just take it that whatever colour your skin is or whatever background they come from people are still people. It?s not what?s on the inside that counts it?s what a person has inside. People can dislike someone because of their personality, but when it?s because of the colour of their skin it?s a different matter. It shows that they have nothing on the inside and because of their skin colour they think they are superior. Well I think they are wrong.

  9. In mass media we often hear the word “racial discrimination”. It means the abuse of human rights of a group (or several groups) of population basing on the human race or nationality. Racial discrimination in different forms exists in different countries all over the world.
The very term first appeared in the middle of the XIX century, though the very discrimination existed for a long time. When people talk about the racial discrimination they mean the discrimination of Negroes in Colonial America, though it is not quite correct. The first discriminated group of people on the territory of America was the Indians – the native population which nowadays almost disappeared. Then Negroes were brought to the continent in the beginning of the XVII century to become slaves. Despite the fact, that slavery was abolished in the XIX century, Negroes remained a rightless group of population for a long time. Until the 1960s they could not study in schools with “white” children, could not use the same public transport and hospitals. There were special waiting areas for them. The courts rendered more severe sentences to the black people. This period of American history is reflected in many books and films. The situation started to change only in the second part of the XX century. Now any discrimination in the USA and in most civil countries is forbidden.
There is one more notion, which is connected with the term. The term “segregation” means the separation of several groups of population. It is a mistake to think that it existed only in the USA. The same situation took place in Europe, Arabian countries and Russia.
Now when in many countries there are special anti-segregation laws the term “positive segregation” is used. It means that the groups of population which used to be discriminated get some specific benefits to compensate the previous violation of their rights. Sometimes it is done alongside with the violation of other groups.
Nowadays racial segregation mostly exists in human minds. Most of people in Europe are afraid of immigrants from the Middle East. It creates tension in the society, bringing serious problems to people’s life.
