Television has become an essential part of our daily life. It gives us much useful and interesting information. It makes a great opportunity for education and entertaining. Television keeps us informed about the current events in the world. Nowadays it offers a wide variety of channels and all kinds of programmes and films which are able to satisfy any taste and any age. Besides, thanks to satellite TV, we can watch channels from different countries.
According to the statistics data, the most regular TV viewers are housewives, pensioners and children. My grandmother, for instance, is very fond of Russian long-running sagas and Brazilian soap-operas which always have a happy end. She finds them quite relaxing. As for me, the story lines in those soap-operas seem unreal and too dramatic. My grandfather loves all news programmes and documentaries devoted to our history. When my mum stays at home she prefers watching different women’s talk-shows, concerts, quiz-shows or reality-shows.
Actually I was also a real fan of a reality show “Last Hero”. I saw all 7 seasons of it but, alas, it finished in 2009. As far as I know this show was the Russian version of an American “Survivor”. The contestants of the show were sent to a desert island and then split up into tribes. I liked the idea of putting them in extraordinary and sometimes even dangerous circumstances. I always tried to figure out what I would have done if I had been sent to that island and had lived in a tribe too. The participants of this dynamic reality show had to fight hard because the winner’s prize was rather substantial.
And now I really enjoy a fantastic vocal talent show “Voice” presented by Dmitriy Nagiev. It started in 2012 and is broadcast every weekend. The format of “Voice” differs from other traditional music contests because the participants are already professional singers with fabulous vocal capabilities. The judges (Alexander Gradskiy, Dima Bilan, Pelageya and Leonid Agutin) evaluate the contestant’s voices and make decisions without looking at the singers, through a blind audition process. As soon as the judges have formed their teams they start competing with each other. Eventually only one singer will be honoured the grand prize and become “The vest voice”.
Luckily I am not a TV addict and I don’t spend all my leisure time in front of the so called “one-eyed living-room monster”. However I do my best not to miss my favourite programmes.

My favourite TV programme is one made by Dmitriy Krylov. It is a weekly programme. It is broadcast on Sunday. This programme is very popular in our country. They show many historical places, tell interesting facts about different countries and cities, broadcast interviews with famous people. I like this programme and try not to miss it.
I prefer to watch youth programmes such as «While Everybody’s at Home» on Sunday and «The Morning Star». In addition I like to see interesting films. It’s the second place after the Internet to know news quickly and the weather, to listen to the experts’ comments on political situation, to watch interesting films, to see the wild life or some countries you will have never been to.
Planet Earth
My favourite TV programme is Planet Earth on Discovery Channel. I think it’s by far the best source of information for those who are interested in the wondrous beauty of the planet Earth and want to know how the Earth works learning more about many facets of Earth including power and light, wind and fire, planets and stars and much more. I believe it beats all other forms of television programming.

Planet Earth is a 2006 television series produced by the BBC Natural History Unit. Five years in the making, it was the most expensive nature documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC, and also the first to be filmed in high definition. Planet Earth was first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC One in March 2006, and premiered one year later in the USA on the Discovery Channel. By June 2007, it had been shown in 130 countries worldwide.

The series comprises eleven episodes, each of which features a global overview of a different habitat on Earth. At the end of each fifty-minute episode, a ten-minute featurette takes a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of filming the series.

Let me tell you a little bit about my favourite show, which I’ve started watching recently. It’s called the Extra English. It is a sitcom about four students, who live in the hostel. All of them are funny and nice, each in their own way. However, being young and inexperienced, they often get into stupid situations. Hector is only happy to see them fail. He is a strict. He also likes playing mean tricks on them. His friend Nick often helps him.
Bridget on the contrary tries to stop them. She helps and supports the students in every possible way, because one of them is her son. Another noteworthy character in the show is Annie – a chief teacher. On the one hand, she tries to help them, on the other – she also likes playing tricks on poor youngsters. All in all the plot of the show is interesting and breathtaking.
I can watch these series nonstop. They are usually short and last only for 20 or 25 minutes. Each series is like a separate story, however the characters are the same. One of the main reasons why I prefer this show to others is its English implication. My dream is to become a teacher in the future, so I try to learn more about this noble profession.
Apart from funny parts, there are many useful series, which contain information about English-speaking country. To conclude, I’d like to say that I strongly recommend watching this show if you want to stay in good mood all day long.
