As for me, I enjoy shopping. My friend Julia and I visit a big shopping mall Mega almost every week. It is situated in the far district of the city. We go there by bus after lunch and come back late in the evening. Every time we buy different things: sometimes for me, sometimes for her, sometimes for both of us. When I don’t need anything, I just follow Julia and help her to choose. She does the same for me. I never feel bored, we talk a lot. After the shopping we usually go to one of the cafes to have a bite. If there is an interesting movie in the cinema, we buy tickets and watch it.
It is always a big joy to make these shopping trips with Julia. I don’t see anything bad about them. Most of all, I enjoy buying new clothes, accessories and cosmetics. Well, to be honest, sometimes I buy things that I don’t really need – when there is a sale or when I am in a bad mood. After shopping I feel happier, it helps to get rid of stress.
I think there is nothing wrong with shopping for pleasure. It is all right to give money for things that make you feel good. We should just remember that there’s a sensible limit for any pleasure. If you know when to stop, shopping can’t do you any harm. It will only bring positive emotions.

Well, all this stuff you may buy at a market place and very often it is cheaper and of better quality. There are also big supermarkets where you can buy everything. Such shops are very universal and well-stocked. Moreover, we can order goods by telephone and with the help of different catalogues and fashion magazines.
Going shopping in my city is a wonderful and instant way of participating in everyday life here. Most shops in my place open at 9 a. m. and close at 8 p.m., they are opened from Monday to Sunday. Most grocery shops are opened also on Sunday. Actually, there are many big and small shops in my district. The largest department store is situated near my house and it houses everything from bags to household gadgets and bed-linen. When I’m done with everything on the list, I head for the till and pay for my purchase. When I don’t want to spend time doing the shopping myself I can have food delivered to my place. I choose what I need from an online catalogue; place my order on the site and wait for a courier to deliver it.
Buying clothes
If I need some clothes I go shopping in a department store or a shopping centre because they offer good value. I can easily claim that the Russians are highly adventurous shoppers. Despite the fact that we prefer reliability and high-quality, we can easily buy even a faulty good provided we really like it. Nevertheless, shopping habits totally depend on a person`s income rate.
Shopping for clothes is the most exiting kind of shopping, so I`d like to start with it. Upper and upper-middle classes prefer brand name high quality designer clothes. I personally strongly doubt about the quality of such things but it`s absolutely obvious that they help to enhance the status of the owner. Wearing designer clothes with an embroidered logo isn`t regarded as naff in Russia, but it`s a clear indicator of a person`s social status. Moreover, they prefer making their purchases in department stores or shopping centers. However, middle and low classes prefer buying own-brand clothes or generics of the lower quality as they are significantly cheaper. Their favourite places to shop are market places as well as shopping centres.
Shopping for food is not so exiting, but it is vitally important for everyone. The majority of Russian people buy their produces in various supermarkets in spite of the fact that the prices there are twice or even three times as high as at market, but the range of goods is definitely bigger. Thus, there are a lot of market places in Russian towns and cities where you can find different food: fruit, vegetable, meet, cheese, poultry, ect. However, one should be careful when making a purchase there: not only might the product quality may be law, but also the shopper might be twisted round the finger! I should mention that there are practically no corner shops in Russia as the market was cornered by supermarket chains and it has became impossible for them to compete with `trade giants`.
So, these are the main shopping habits in Russia. However, they have slightly changed under the influence of European and American lifestyle and all the social barriers are beginning to dilute.

What is shopping? It is rather a tricky question, in my opinion, as for different people shopping means different things: it may be a household duty, a favourite leisure activity or something else. For most men it is an ordeal, they can hardly bear more than twenty minutes in any shop and prefer doing any kind of hard work to accompanying their wives or girlfriends in a boutique or a supermarket. For women shopping for clothes, toiletries or jewelries is a kind of entertainment, they can spend hours choosing a T-shirt or a pair of shoes, trying them on or even window-shopping. Although the word shopaholic was coined a few years ago the phenomenon itself has been excsting for hundreds of years. Fortunately I am not crazy about shopping, but I always shop around before making a purchase, however I am compelled to admit that modern department stores and malls have an irresistible fascination, especially at Christmas time when they are lit by light and beautifully decorated.
By the way, a few years ago we had no idea of what a mall is, they were associated with the USA or Western Europe. As far as I know American teenagers who spent most of their time in malls were even called mall rats. Now we have in Saratov and have got used both to the word and these huge shopping centers.
Modern technology affects people`s lifestyles and daily routine. Now we can do our shopping not only in stores or markets but also on the Internet. No doubt shopping online is more convenient and less time consuming but on the other hand buying clothes without trying them on or perfume without smelling it may not seem a good idea.
While Internet purchases seem to be themost advanced kind of shopping flea markets attract more and more people. Lots of people go there in search of bargains. Shopping for food is less exciting but may be more essential. One can choose between small groceries and big food shops, chain stores and supermarkets. In contrast to small shops they are more spacious and well laid out, with the goods arranged tidily and attractively on long lines of shelves and in refrigerator units. A bewildering multitude of signs, posters and advertising displays draw the attention of customers to this or that product or “special offer”. Because of their big size big stores are able to offer a much wider selection of good than their small competitors and at a lower price. So they are large, efficient, well organized and modern but at the same time somewhat soulless and impersonal. Nevertheless very few people feel nostalgic about the time when there were neither supermarkets nor food on the shelves of local shops.

На мой взгляд, это очень сложный вопрос, так как для разных людей шопинг означает различные вещи: это может быть бытовая обязанность, любимый способ проведения досуга или что-то другое. Для большинства мужчин это испытание, они с трудом могут перенести больше 20 минутв любом магазине и предпочитают делать любой вид тяжелой работы чем сопровождать их жен или девушек в бутике или супермаркете. Для женщин покупка одежды, туалетных принадлежностей или ювелирных изделий – это своего рода развлечение, они могут часами выбирать футболку или пару обуви, примеряя их или просматривая витрины. Хотя слово шопоголик было введено несколько лет назад, сам феномен существует сотни лет. К счастью, я не схожу с ума по шопингу, но я всегда обойду все магазины, прежде чем сделаю окончательный выбор, однако я вынуждена признать, что в современных универмагах и торговых центрах есть непреодолимое очарование, особенно во время Рождества, когда они освещены огоньками и красиво украшены.
Кстати, несколько лет назад мы понятия не имели о том, что такое торговый центр, они ассоциировались с США или Западной Европой. Насколько я знаю, американских подростков, которые проводили большую часть своего времени в торговых центрах даже называли mall rats. Теперь и в Саратове есть всемирно известные торговые центры.

Нет сомнений, что онлайн-покупки более удобные и менее трудоёмкие, но с другой стороны покупка одежды без примерки или духи, не нюхая их, не может показаться хорошей идеей.

Modern information technologies have influenced greatly people’s lifestyle and their daily routine. Today we can do shopping not only at markets and stores but also on the Internet. There is a great variety of online shops on the Internet and they sell all kinds of goods: from cars or airplane tickets to books or food. You can buy anything just with a few clicks of the mouse. The first online store appeared in England in 1979. And since then shopping online has become really popular and widely-used. Currently the largest world online corporations are “Amazon” and “eBay”.
It is often faster and cheaper to buy online. For instance, finding and buying books on a website is easier and more convenient than walking around a large bookstore. Moreover, customers save not only their time but money as well: warehouses are normally cheaper than shops, so online companies offer lower prices even when delivery charges are included. Although shipping a small number of items from another country could be sometimes quite expensive.
It goes without saying that not all products can be purchased online as easy as books. People prefer to try on clothes, for example, to feel the quality and choose the right size. So they often go shopping first, choose the product in stores and then place an order for it online, having found some attractive discount.
Online shopping is also an ideal way of buying goods for extremely busy people or for the disabled. Online stores are usually available 24 hours a day. All you need is the Internet access and a valid method of payment: credit cards, electronic money or cash on delivery.
The main disadvantage of online shopping is insecurity. There is always a small risk that your financial and personal information might be exploited by hackers. Other frustrating disadvantages are additional costs for delivery and long waiting time, up to several weeks. Besides, online shopping is a bit risky because you can get goods of bad quality, broken or even wrong items.
As we can see, shopping on the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages. To my mind, it is a very useful and convenient invention. We should just be careful when choosing a website and placing orders.

Some people
are fond of shopping. Others consider it to be a waste of time.
Different people have different attitude to shopping. It is
usually considered that all women love shopping, while all men
hate it. In reality there are women who are indifferent to the
process of purchasing things and there are men who find shopping
to be the best entertainment.
Personally, I like shopping. To my mind, it is a wonderful
leisure activity. I often go shopping just to pass the time, to
get pleasure or to plan a later purchase. Besides, sometimes I
make purchases online. It is very fast and convenient. You have
access to the information about the particular product and you
can look at it. What is more, you don’t even have to leave your
house. It helps you save much time and effort and encourages you
to purchase more products.
However, some people hate shopping and consider it to be a
terrible waste of time and money. It drives them crazy to look
for the things they need and to wait in long lines to buy them.
They prefer to purchase everything they need in the nearest
supermarket. Sometimes they buy clothes in the sales without
paying attention to their quality and price. Such people take
the first thing that falls into their hands and don’t try to
look for something cheaper and better as they can’t stand the
process of exploring shop-windows and counters. But I think that
department stores and supermarkets save plenty of time and make
our lives easier.
To conclude, shopping is a part of people’s daily lives. But
it’s up to you to decide how much time and money to spend on
shopping. Some people
like supermarkets and shopping centers. However, others say that
they have too many disadvantages. Nowadays there are a lot of shops, supermarkets and shopping

To sum up, I think that supermarkets and shopping centers are
very useful. But when you go there, you should try to be
economical and buy only the things you need. Otherwise, you risk
spending too much money. Some people
enjoy buying different things, while others say that our lives
would be better if we bought fewer goods. To buy or not to buy? That is the question. Modern society
is often called consumer society, because buying goods and
services is considered to be very important. What people need
depends on their age, character, way of life and other factors.
But do we really need as much as we buy?
Personally, I am fond of shopping. I often buy things which I
don’t really need, but which make my life a little happier such
as an MP3 player, designer jeans, beautiful postcards or a bar
of chocolate. There is always a wide choice of different goods
in every shop and supermarket and when I see beautifully shaped
bottles and bright wraps, I can’t resist the temptation to buy

rubbish and causing pollution. Besides, if we don’t buy so many

working day and we will have more spare time. It will give us an
opportunity to go in for sports, to travel and what not.
To conclude, when we go shopping, we should think about what we
really need to buy. It is also useful not to take much money
with you and to make a list of goods you need, so that you will
not be influenced by advertisements, discounts or promotions.
Our lives may become happier and healthier if we buy less. Some people
think that excessive shopping is a hobby and the way to spend
your free time. Others say that shopaholism is a disease with
its specific symptoms. Many people, especially women, consider shopping to be a
leisure activity. They go shopping to pass the time and to get
pleasure. However, love for shopping is all right until it turns
into addiction.
To my mind, shopaholism is becoming a global problem, with the
growth of advertizing and online trading. It can be compared
with smoking, alcoholism or drug abuse. People who are addicted
to shopping say that the act of buying gives them a high like a
drug. Shopaholics often feel satisfaction when they are in the
process of purchasing. Shopping gives them a sort of euphoria
and excitement. It helps them forget about their sorrow. But
there is usually a feeling of disappointment afterwards,
followed by guilt. Shopaholics feel either regretful or
depressed when they get home. Some people become so ashamed of
their problem that they may commit suicide. Furthermore,
shopaholism leads to emotional, social and financial problems.
The consequences also include ruined relationships, health
problems, extreme levels of debt or even theft.
Nevertheless, some people do not realize how destructive the
nature of shopaholism is. They don’t take any measures when
their friends or relatives spend much time and money on buying
useless things. But they must understand that shopaholism is not
just love for shopping. I think that people who are addicted to
shopping must receive treatment for shopaholism.
To conclude, shopaholism is a serious disorder which can lead to
numerous problems. That’s why it is essential to notice early
signs of this addiction. If you catch the trouble early, the
problem may be easy to fix.

Department stores carry clothing for men, women and children, china and glassware, household electric appliances, furniture and other goods. However, many people don’t like to shop in big department stores as they are often overcrowded.
In my city we also have got a great number of shops. Most of them open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 or 9 at night. Smaller shops normally have a lunch break. Nearly all shops are closed on Sundays. I should say that all the shops are equally popular with customers, though some of them are really expensive. But they are not always quality shops. That’s why many people these days prefer to do the shopping at the market where the prices are more reasonable.
In our family it’s my father who does most of the shopping. He usually shops in the supermarket, where he goes to the grocery department, the greengrocery, the meat and fish counters and buys all the stuff we need for our large family. He usually does it once a week.
For me and my mother on the other hand going shopping is a kind of pastime and even entertainment. We can spend hours and hours dropping in at one shop after another in search of something special or unusual. More than often we buy things that we practically don’t need.
I love shopping for clothes. The last shopping round I made with my friend a few days ago. We set out midmorning and managed to go round all the shops in the city which where worth visiting. First we went to the central department store but the goods there were the same as everywhere else and more expensive. Besides we didn’t see any fashion clothes for the young. The only good thing about such stores is that they normally have a good selection of cosmetics and perfumery. So we didn’t miss a chance to pick up some mascara and hair spray. After that we had a quick look at the footwear, haberdashery and ready-made clothes and were ready for a snack at McDonalds. Then we dropped in at some small shops which offer fashionable clothes and a half-price sale is a usual thing there. After going through the latest cuts of shirts and skirts I found a lovely little dress for myself but they didn’t have my size. So I told myself that next time I wouldn’t wait for amazing items to go on sale — it’s not worth the disappointment when they disappear before you can make your purchase. Then we moved on to another shop that had «А Huge Sale» sign on the door. After making our way through the crowd each of us grabbed piles of clothes and waited in the line for the fitting rooms. We tried on the selected items but didn’t buy anything as even the sale prices were too high for us.
Indeed, shopping is a pleasant pastime when you can afford to buy the things you like.

I should say that I am one of those boys who hate shopping and the idea of doing the shopping drives me mad, though, of course, I like delicious food and nice clothes. It means somebody has to do it for you. In our family it’s my mother’s responsibility. She knows what to buy and where to buy at a cheaper price. I live in a small town, so there are not many shops here, to say nothing of supermarkets. Most shops are situated in the centre of the town and there is a two-storeyed department store in the central square and it is always overcrowded. The market is opposite the department store and people, mostly women and girls, go there to shop but in my opinion they more often go to look at the things than to buy. I don’t understand this kind of pastime.
I seldom go shopping, but I know where this or that thing can be bought. For example, if I want to save time, I go to the nearest food store where I can buy everything I need: bread, milk, sugar, eggs, butter and so on. I prefer this shop because the goods are ready-weighed and ready-packed. I find it convenient and always go there if my mother forgets to buy something and I am sent for it.
I also know that department stores have a lot of departments: stationary, millinery, footwear, sportswear goods, perfumery, jewellery, ready-made women’s and men’s clothes. All the things for sale are on the counters and in the shop windows so the customers can choose what they want.
As I have said I am not keen on shopping at all and when my parents ask me to buy something, I am always reluctant to do it. From time to time my mother takes me to a department store when we need to buy some clothes or shoes for me. I hate trying things on in a fitting-room. Most of all I like book and music shops. I can stay there for hours leafing through pages of some historical books or going through piles of CDs or records. These shops are worth visiting even if you don’t intend to make a purchase there as they offer a wide selection of books on music. But regular shopping is really boring and tiresome.
When we want to buy something, we go to a shop. The shop assistant shows the customer various goods and sells them. We pay at the cash-desk. The goods can be wrapped up or packed in a box or parcel.

It’s widely known that most people especially women enjoy going shopping. It gives them joy and pleasure. I think shopping could be divided into two types: shopping for food and for all the other stuff.

As for the first type, we do it every day as we always need such products as bread, milk, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Some people prefer to shop in the supermarket. They find it very convenient to buy everything they need in one place because supermarkets indeed offer a great variety of food products. However, others still like going to the food markets as they believe that prices there are much lower. Anyway, it’s up to the person to decide where to shop. I think it’s very useful to make a shopping list beforehand in order not to waste time remembering what things you need to buy.
Shopping for clothes
To my mind, the second type of shopping is much more popular with women as they shop for clothes and accessories. They also have a choice whether to go to single specialized shops and boutiques or to spend time in a shopping centre with numerous shops, cafes and entertainments in them. Such places are very comfortable for the whole family.
Fashion
Nowadays the most important thing for many people especially youngsters is to look cool and fashionable. That’s why they spend lots of money on widely known brands such as Nike, Adidas and many others. These companies in their turn spend huge amounts of money on advertising their goods. Sometimes they organize sales in order to attract new customers.

As for me, I enjoy shopping. My friend Julia and I visit a big shopping mall Mega almost every week. It is situated in the far district of the city. We go there by bus after lunch and come back late in the evening. Every time we buy different things: sometimes for me, sometimes for her, sometimes for both of us. When I don’t need anything, I just follow Julia and help her to choose. She does the same for me. I never feel bored, we talk a lot. After the shopping we usually go to one of the cafes to have a bite. If there is an interesting movie in the cinema, we buy tickets and watch it.
It is always a big joy to make these shopping trips with Julia. I don’t see anything bad about them. Most of all, I enjoy buying new clothes, accessories and cosmetics. Well, to be honest, sometimes I buy things that I don’t really need – when there is a sale or when I am in a bad mood. After shopping I feel happier, it helps to get rid of stress.
I think there is nothing wrong with shopping for pleasure. It is all right to give money for things that make you feel good. We should just remember that there’s a sensible limit for any pleasure. If you know when to stop, shopping can’t do you any harm. It will only bring positive emotions.

Говоря о покупках, не могу не отметить очень специфический феномен в нашей жизни – рекламу. Нам приходится слушать объявления и смотреть рекламу по крайней мере сто раз в день. Она проникает в наше сознание и заставляет нас носить определенную одежду и обувь, она принуждает нас постоянно жевать жвачку, чистить зубы только Colgate и пить кофе Nescafe.
Так как существует большое количество разных товаров, то есть и много магазинов, которые продают тот или иной вид продукции. Вот краткий список различных видов магазинов. В универмагах есть много разных отделов: галантерея, головные уборы, парфюмерия, канцтовары, кожгалантерея, спортивные товары, фарфор и стекло, ткани, белье, отделы мужской и женской одежды. В отделе женской одежды можно выбрать платья, юбки, блузки, пальто, нижнее белье. В отделе мужской одежды можно купить костюмы, свитеры, кардиганы, пуловеры, брюки и шерстяные куртки. Мы идем в молочный магазин, чтобы купить молоко, сливки, сыр. Рыбные консервы, икра, крабы, лобстеры, и различные виды рыб — карп, треска, лосось, форель, скумбрия – можно приобрести в рыбном отделе. Сахар, манная крупа, гречка, рис, кофе, спагетти, лапша продаются у бакалейщика. В овощном магазине можно найти всевозможные овощи и фрукты. Все эти продукты вы можете купить и на рынке – часто дешевле и лучшего качества. Есть также большие супермаркеты, где можно купить все и сразу. Такие магазины универсальны и хорошо укомплектованы. Более того, мы можем заказывать товары по телефону и с помощью различных каталогов и модных журналов.
В моем городе поход по магазинам – способ поучаствовать в повседневной жизни города. Большинство магазинов здесь открывается в 9 утра и закрываются в 8 часов вечера. Работают они с понедельника по воскресенье. Большинство продуктовых магазинов открыты и в воскресенье. В моем районе есть много больших и малых магазинов. Крупнейший универмаг расположен рядом с моим домом и в нем есть все: от пакетов до бытовой техники и постельного белья. На первом этаже находится впечатляющий торговый зал, выложенный плиткой. В зале множество полок с рыбой, сырами, мясом и другими продуктами. Есть и другие отделы – стекло, электроника и посуда. Наш универмаг имеет хороший ассортимент и шикарный выбор различных товаров.
В моем городе есть несколько рынков с удивительным ассортиментом товаров. Если вы хотите посетить самый большой рынок, вам нужны крепкие ноги, удобная обувь и много времени. На рынке продается все, что только можно вообразить, от крошечных открывашек до телевизоров, здесь также предоставлен разнообразный спектр торговых услуг. Так, в городе есть много мест, где можно купить еду, подарки, одежду и другие вещи.

As you can see it’s rather long, so if you asked me if I’m a «basket-person» or a «trolley-person» I would take a shopping cart and go down the aisles. When I’m done with everything on the list, I head for the till and pay for my purchase. When I don’t want to spend time doing the shopping myself I can have food delivered to my place. I choose what I need from an online catalogue; place my order on the site and wait for a courier to deliver it.
Buying clothes
If I need some clothes I go shopping in a department store or a shopping centre because they offer good value. I never go to boutiques or upmarket shops because they are rather pricy and I can’t afford them. I often go shopping online. There are great benefits of shopping online. Competition is high, so there are always great sales and promotions. You also save time by shopping online.

I can easily claim that the Russians are highly adventurous shoppers. Despite the fact that we prefer reliability and high-quality, we can easily buy even a faulty good provided we really like it. Nevertheless, shopping habits totally depend on a person`s income rate.
Shopping for clothes is the most exiting kind of shopping, so I`d like to start with it. Upper and upper-middle classes prefer brand name high quality designer clothes. I personally strongly doubt about the quality of such things but it`s absolutely obvious that they help to enhance the status of the owner. Wearing designer clothes with an embroidered logo isn`t regarded as naff in Russia, but it`s a clear indicator of a person`s social status. Moreover, they prefer making their purchases in department stores or shopping centers. However, middle and low classes prefer buying own-brand clothes or generics of the lower quality as they are significantly cheaper. Their favourite places to shop are market places as well as shopping centres.
Shopping for food is not so exiting, but it is vitally important for everyone. The majority of Russian people buy their produces in various supermarkets in spite of the fact that the prices there are twice or even three times as high as at market, but the range of goods is definitely bigger. Thus, there are a lot of market places in Russian towns and cities where you can find different food: fruit, vegetable, meet, cheese, poultry, ect. However, one should be careful when making a purchase there: not only might the product quality may be law, but also the shopper might be twisted round the finger! I should mention that there are practically no corner shops in Russia as the market was cornered by supermarket chains and it has became impossible for them to compete with `trade giants`.
So, these are the main shopping habits in Russia. However, they have slightly changed under the influence of European and American lifestyle and all the social barriers are beginning to dilute.

Тем не менее, в российских городах множество рынков, где можно приобрести различные продукты: фрукты, овощи, мясо, сыры, птицу и т.д. Но вам следует быть осторожным, делая покупки на рынке, так как качество продуктов может быть низким, и продавцы могутвас попросту обмануть. What is shopping? It is rather a tricky question, in my opinion, as for different people shopping means different things: it may be a household duty, a favourite leisure activity or something else. For most men it is an ordeal, they can hardly bear more than twenty minutes in any shop and prefer doing any kind of hard work to accompanying their wives or girlfriends in a boutique or a supermarket. For women shopping for clothes, toiletries or jewelries is a kind of entertainment, they can spend hours choosing a T-shirt or a pair of shoes, trying them on or even window-shopping. Although the word shopaholic was coined a few years ago the phenomenon itself has been excsting for hundreds of years. Fortunately I am not crazy about shopping, but I always shop around before making a purchase, however I am compelled to admit that modern department stores and malls have an irresistible fascination, especially at Christmas time when they are lit by light and beautifully decorated.
By the way, a few years ago we had no idea of what a mall is, they were associated with the USA or Western Europe. As far as I know American teenagers who spent most of their time in malls were even called mall rats. Now we have in Saratov and have got used both to the word and these huge shopping centers.
Modern technology affects people`s lifestyles and daily routine. Now we can do our shopping not only in stores or markets but also on the Internet. No doubt shopping online is more convenient and less time consuming but on the other hand buying clothes without trying them on or perfume without smelling it may not seem a good idea.
While Internet purchases seem to be themost advanced kind of shopping flea markets attract more and more people. Lots of people go there in search of bargains. Shopping for food is less exciting but may be more essential. One can choose between small groceries and big food shops, chain stores and supermarkets. In contrast to small shops they are more spacious and well laid out, with the goods arranged tidily and attractively on long lines of shelves and in refrigerator units. A bewildering multitude of signs, posters and advertising displays draw the attention of customers to this or that product or “special offer”. Because of their big size big stores are able to offer a much wider selection of good than their small competitors and at a lower price. So they are large, efficient, well organized and modern but at the same time somewhat soulless and impersonal. Nevertheless very few people feel nostalgic about the time when there were neither supermarkets nor food on the shelves of local shops.

The first online store appeared in England in 1979. And since then shopping online has become really popular and widely-used. Currently the largest world online corporations are “Amazon” and “eBay”.
It is often faster and cheaper to buy online. For instance, finding and buying books on a website is easier and more convenient than walking around a large bookstore. Moreover, customers save not only their time but money as well: warehouses are normally cheaper than shops, so online companies offer lower prices even when delivery charges are included. Although shipping a small number of items from another country could be sometimes quite expensive.
It goes without saying that not all products can be purchased online as easy as books. People prefer to try on clothes, for example, to feel the quality and choose the right size. So they often go shopping first, choose the product in stores and then place an order for it online, having found some attractive discount.
Online shopping is also an ideal way of buying goods for extremely busy people or for the disabled. Online stores are usually available 24 hours a day. All you need is the Internet access and a valid method of payment: credit cards, electronic money or cash on delivery.
The main disadvantage of online shopping is insecurity. There is always a small risk that your financial and personal information might be exploited by hackers. Other frustrating disadvantages are additional costs for delivery and long waiting time, up to several weeks. Besides, online shopping is a bit risky because you can get goods of bad quality, broken or even wrong items.
As we can see, shopping on the Internet has both advantages and disadvantages. To my mind, it is a very useful and convenient invention. We should just be careful when choosing a website and placing orders.

usually considered that all women love shopping, while all men
hate it. In reality there are women who are indifferent to the
process of purchasing things and there are men who find shopping
to be the best entertainment.
Personally, I like shopping. To my mind, it is a wonderful
leisure activity. I often go shopping just to pass the time, to
get pleasure or to plan a later purchase. Besides, sometimes I
make purchases online. It is very fast and convenient. You have
access to the information about the particular product and you
can look at it. What is more, you don’t even have to leave your
house. It helps you save much time and effort and encourages you
to purchase more products.
However, some people hate shopping and consider it to be a
terrible waste of time and money. It drives them crazy to look
for the things they need and to wait in long lines to buy them.
They prefer to purchase everything they need in the nearest
supermarket. Sometimes they buy clothes in the sales without
paying attention to their quality and price. Such people take
the first thing that falls into their hands and don’t try to
look for something cheaper and better as they can’t stand the
process of exploring shop-windows and counters. But I think that
department stores and supermarkets save plenty of time and make
our lives easier.

To sum up, I think that supermarkets and shopping centers are
very useful. But when you go there, you should try to be
economical and buy only the things you need. Otherwise, you risk
spending too much money.

bottles and bright wraps, I can’t resist the temptation to buy
things.
However, some people say that if we bought only what we needed,
there would be enough for everybody. If we buy fewer goods, we
will become “conservers” because it will help save natural
resources. Some products have too much packaging, creating more
rubbish and causing pollution. Besides, if we don’t buy so many
things, we won’t have to work so much. We will reduce our
working day and we will have more spare time. It will give us an
opportunity to go in for sports, to travel and what not.
To conclude, when we go shopping, we should think about what we
really need to buy. It is also useful not to take much money
with you and to make a list of goods you need, so that you will
not be influenced by advertisements, discounts or promotions.
Our lives may become happier and healthier if we buy less.
Some people
think that excessive shopping is a hobby and the way to spend
your free time. Others say that shopaholism is a disease with
its specific symptoms.
Many people, especially women, consider shopping to be a
leisure activity. They go shopping to pass the time and to get
pleasure. However, love for shopping is all right until it turns
into addiction.
To my mind, shopaholism is becoming a global problem, with the
growth of advertizing and online trading. It can be compared
with smoking, alcoholism or drug abuse. People who are addicted
to shopping say that the act of buying gives them a high like a
drug. Shopaholics often feel satisfaction when they are in the
process of purchasing. Shopping gives them a sort of euphoria
and excitement. It helps them forget about their sorrow. But
there is usually a feeling of disappointment afterwards,
followed by guilt. Shopaholics feel either regretful or
depressed when they get home. Some people become so ashamed of
their problem that they may commit suicide. Furthermore,
shopaholism leads to emotional, social and financial problems.
The consequences also include ruined relationships, health
problems, extreme levels of debt or even theft.
Nevertheless, some people do not realize how destructive the
nature of shopaholism is. They don’t take any measures when
their friends or relatives spend much time and money on buying
useless things. But they must understand that shopaholism is not
just love for shopping. I think that people who are addicted to
shopping must receive treatment for shopaholism.
To conclude, shopaholism is a serious disorder which can lead to
numerous problems. That’s why it is essential to notice early
signs of this addiction. If you catch the trouble early, the
problem may be easy to fix.

wants. You pay money to the cashier and he gives you back the

Department stores carry clothing for men, women and children, china and glassware, household electric appliances, furniture and other goods. However, many people don’t like to shop in big department stores as they are often overcrowded.
In my city we also have got a great number of shops. Most of them open at 9 a.m. and close at 8 or 9 at night. Smaller shops normally have a lunch break. Nearly all shops are closed on Sundays. I should say that all the shops are equally popular with customers, though some of them are really expensive. But they are not always quality shops. That’s why many people these days prefer to do the shopping at the market where the prices are more reasonable.
In our family it’s my father who does most of the shopping. He usually shops in the supermarket, where he goes to the grocery department, the greengrocery, the meat and fish counters and buys all the stuff we need for our large family. He usually does it once a week.
For me and my mother on the other hand going shopping is a kind of pastime and even entertainment. We can spend hours and hours dropping in at one shop after another in search of something special or unusual. More than often we buy things that we practically don’t need.
I love shopping for clothes. The last shopping round I made with my friend a few days ago. We set out midmorning and managed to go round all the shops in the city which where worth visiting. First we went to the central department store but the goods there were the same as everywhere else and more expensive. Besides we didn’t see any fashion clothes for the young. The only good thing about such stores is that they normally have a good selection of cosmetics and perfumery. So we didn’t miss a chance to pick up some mascara and hair spray. After that we had a quick look at the footwear, haberdashery and ready-made clothes and were ready for a snack at McDonalds. Then we dropped in at some small shops which offer fashionable clothes and a half-price sale is a usual thing there. After going through the latest cuts of shirts and skirts I found a lovely little dress for myself but they didn’t have my size. So I told myself that next time I wouldn’t wait for amazing items to go on sale — it’s not worth the disappointment when they disappear before you can make your purchase. Then we moved on to another shop that had «А Huge Sale» sign on the door. After making our way through the crowd each of us grabbed piles of clothes and waited in the line for the fitting rooms. We tried on the selected items but didn’t buy anything as even the sale prices were too high for us.
Indeed, shopping is a pleasant pastime when you can afford to buy the things you like.

I should say that I am one of those boys who hate shopping and the idea of doing the shopping drives me mad, though, of course, I like delicious food and nice clothes. It means somebody has to do it for you. In our family it’s my mother’s responsibility. She knows what to buy and where to buy at a cheaper price. I live in a small town, so there are not many shops here, to say nothing of supermarkets. Most shops are situated in the centre of the town and there is a two-storeyed department store in the central square and it is always overcrowded. The market is opposite the department store and people, mostly women and girls, go there to shop but in my opinion they more often go to look at the things than to buy. I don’t understand this kind of pastime.
I seldom go shopping, but I know where this or that thing can be bought. For example, if I want to save time, I go to the nearest food store where I can buy everything I need: bread, milk, sugar, eggs, butter and so on. I prefer this shop because the goods are ready-weighed and ready-packed. I find it convenient and always go there if my mother forgets to buy something and I am sent for it.
I also know that department stores have a lot of departments: stationary, millinery, footwear, sportswear goods, perfumery, jewellery, ready-made women’s and men’s clothes. All the things for sale are on the counters and in the shop windows so the customers can choose what they want.

These shops are worth visiting even if you don’t intend to make a purchase there as they offer a wide selection of books on music. But regular shopping is really boring and tiresome.

It’s widely known that most people especially women enjoy going shopping. It gives them joy and pleasure. I think shopping could be divided into two types: shopping for food and for all the other stuff.
Shopping for food
As for the first type, we do it every day as we always need such products as bread, milk, eggs, vegetables and fruits. Some people prefer to shop in the supermarket. They find it very convenient to buy everything they need in one place because supermarkets indeed offer a great variety of food products. However, others still like going to the food markets as they believe that prices there are much lower. Anyway, it’s up to the person to decide where to shop. I think it’s very useful to make a shopping list beforehand in order not to waste time remembering what things you need to buy.
Shopping for clothes
To my mind, the second type of shopping is much more popular with women as they shop for clothes and accessories. They also have a choice whether to go to single specialized shops and boutiques or to spend time in a shopping centre with numerous shops, cafes and entertainments in them. Such places are very comfortable for the whole family.
Fashion
Nowadays the most important thing for many people especially youngsters is to look cool and fashionable. That’s why they spend lots of money on widely known brands such as Nike, Adidas and many others. These companies in their turn spend huge amounts of money on advertising their goods. Sometimes they organize sales in order to attract new customers.
Buying things on line
One more modern tendency is to shop on the Internet where you can buy all sorts of things. Besides, it’s really easy and time saving. I should say that prices are quite the same as in other shops.

We go to the butcher’s to buy some kinds of meat: pork, veal, mutton or beef and we can buy some poultry there as well: chickens, ducks, geese or turkeys.
A milk shop is call a dairy. There we buy dairy products: milk, butter, cheese, cream.
When we run out of bread we go to the bakers and ask for a loaf of white or brown bread.
A cake shop sells pastries and cakes of all kinds. The confectioner always does a good trade selling sweets, chocolates, chocolate bars, toffees and other tempting things that make every child’s mouth water.
Many large shops called department stores sell various goods under one roof and you can find there everything you need.
Department stores have a lot of departments: stationery, hosiery, millinery, footwear, sport goods, leather goods, perfumery, jewelry, ready-made women’s and men’s clothes. All the things are on the counters and in the shop windows so the customers can choose what they want.
At the stationery we buy paper, ink, pens, ball-pens, pencils, erasers and felt-tip pens.
In the millinery we buy hats, caps.
In the shoe or footwear department there are many kinds of shoes, boots, sandals, slippers and top-boots.
In the knitwear department we can find all kinds of knitted goods: pullovers, sweaters, cardigans, etc.
If we want new gloves or ties, handkerchiefs or shirts we go to the men’s outfitters.
In the men’s clothing department you can choose suits, trousers, overcoats, ties, etc. In the knitwear department one can buy sweaters, short-sleeved and long-sleeved pullovers, woollen jackets and other clothing for men.
In the women’s clothing department we can choose coats, jackets, dresses, costumes, jumpers, blouses, skirts, underwear and many other things for women.
In the perfumery they have face creams and face powders, lipsticks, scents, lotions and shampoos.
A big store is really a very interesting place. We can simply walk round the store without buying anything at all.

В отделе трикотажа мы можем найти все виды вязаных товаров: пуловеры, свитеры, жакеты и т. д.
Если нам нужны новые перчатки или галстуки, носовые платки или рубашки, мы идем в галантерею.
В отделе мужской одежды вы можете выбрать костюмы, брюки, пальто, галстуки и т. д. В отделе трикотажа можно купить свитера, пуловеры с длинными и короткими рукавами, шерстяные жакеты и другую одежду для мужчин.
В отделе женской одежды мы можем выбрать пальто, жакеты, платья, костюмы, джемперы, блузки, юбки, нижнее белье и много других вещей для женщин.
В парфюмерии есть кремы и пудры для лица, помады, духи, лосьоны и шампуни.
Большой магазин — действительно очень интересное место. Мы можем просто ходить по магазину, вообще ничего не покупая.
