  1. USA. It is faraway country, on the other side of the world. It is country of contrasts and great opportunities. There are a number of time zones and two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic, between us. And what attracts me to it?
The US is state with rich cultural heritage and fascinating history. It has passed a long way of formation and has earned respect from other countries. During the Second World War the US had been a reliable support for the Soviet Union because it had helped much in the fight against the fascism.
America gave the world a lot of great people, such as Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King. This list is endless. We should not forget about Christopher Columbus, because he had discovered this previously unknown continent.
A lot of cultures, mentalities and nations are intertwined in America. This has formed the current face of the country. Today, the US is a prosperous country, “the first economy of the world”. Many people want to go to the US to get an education, make a career, or just see this truly amazing place.
There are so many beautiful cities in America: big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami as well as little provincial towns. I want to pick out New York City among big cities. I associate New York with lots of yellow taxis on Times Square, crowds of people, who hurry somewhere and of course with skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty. Recently, I wanted to “taste “The Big Apple””. No matter how stupidly it sounds, this ambition appeared, when I was playing video game `Grand theft Auto IV`.
That would be so nice to wake up in the morning and go for a walk on Manhattan, visit the famous Wall Street, see Columbia University, stroll along Broadway, stare at the colorful advertising signs in Times Square. Then, we can go to Central Park for a walk, encountering running people in tracksuits, mummies with prams, people walking their dogs or to sit on green grass. After this we can pop to coffee shop and then go to Liberty Island where a statue with the same name is located, which has become a national symbol of America.
New York is the capital of American fashion. Fashion Weeks are held there. New York City is not only a big beautiful city, but it is one of the world economic centers. Also there is the headquarters of UN.
California will certainly leave nobody indifferent. San Francisco with Cable Cars and Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and high technologies, San Diego and its Zoo – that`s California.
There are most picturesque beaches of the West coast. I would be glad to be on of these beaches. Lying on golden sand and the sun gently caressing your skin, ocean softly roaring, boys and girls in swimsuits playing beach volleyball and the rescuers attentively watching over what is happening. California is an excellent place for surfing. I would take a lesson from local surfing instructors.
There is also Hollywood in the Golden State, it is the well-known suburbs of Los Angeles. Hollywood had discovered the world-famous stars like Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. It is noteworthy, that the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is actor too. By the way, I want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It is interesting, that there are two towns, which name is Washington, in America except the capital of the US. The capital of the US, Washington D.C., deserves attention too. What can I say about this city? The government of the USA is situated there and a number of government buildings, like United States Capitol, residence of president of the United States, the White House, and Supreme Court of the United States. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities of America. Architecture of US Capitol and Supreme Court of the US is amazing. In the US capital we can also see The Lincoln Memorial, inside which the statue of sixteenth president is located. You must see this.
United States of America is a truly great country, with special lifestyle, unique people and its own traditions. My cherished dream is to go there and learn how America really is.

Grand Theft Auto IV.

The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world after Russia, Canada and China. It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Atlantic seaboard, across the central plains, over the Rocky Mountains to the densely populated West Coast and then to the island state of Hawaii. The USA also includes Alaska in the north of the continent. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometres. The USA borders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. It also has a sea-border with Russia.
The USA is made up of 50 states and the District of Columbia, a special federal area where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The population of the country is about 239 millions. The USA is called the “nation of immigrants”. The country was settled, built and developed by generations of immigrants and their children. Many different cultural traditions, ethnic sympathies, racial groups and religious affiliations make up the people of the USA.
If we look at the map of the USA, we can see lowlands and mountains. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak is Mount McKinley which is located in Alaska. It is 6193 metres high.
The United States is a land of rivers and lakes. The northern state of Minnesota is known as the land of 10 000 lakes. The largest and deepest lakes in USA are the five Great Lakes on the border with Canada. America’s largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Mississippi is the world’s third longest river after the Nile and the Amazon.
The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast.
The history of this land is long. In prehistoric times hunters crossed from Siberia to Alaska by land.
Gradually they moved southwards and settled all over North and South America. Each tribe developed its own language and customs.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean. Instead of reaching India as he had expected he landed on an island off a continent unknown to Europeans. Thinking that he was in India, Columbus called the people he met there Indians.
Other explorers arrived from Europe. Spanish troops conquered vast parts of Central and South America which are now called Latin America. The French founded settlements in the north. In 1620 the first English party left England for America. They were Puritans, religious people, driven out of the official Church.
The newcomers settled at Plymouth Bay. Some of them died of cold and hunger during the first winter in America. The Indians showed the white settlers how to fish and plant crops. Some settlers traded with the local population and some regarded them as enemies.
In 1783 independence from Britain was gained by 13 North American colonies. They formed the United States of America. In 1789 George Washington was elected the first president of the USA. New states joined the Union and the country grew westwards. Gold and silver were discovered on the Pacific coast and thousands of people rushed there across the continent. New towns sprang up and quickly grew. In the southern states white farmers used black slaves to work on their huge plantations. When slavery was abolished in the North the southern states left the Union and formed the Confederacy. Civil war between the North and South broke out. In 1S65 the Union won and slavery was abolished all over the USA.
Nowadays, the USA is a highly developed industrial country. It is the world’s leading producer of copper and oil and the world’s second producer of iron ore and coal. Among the most important manufacturing industries are aircraft, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, armaments, furniture and paper.
American farmers plant spring wheat in the western plains. They raise corn, wheat and beef cattle in the Midwest. Florida and California are famous for their vegetables and fruit production, and the northwestern states are known for apples, pears, berries and vegetables.
There are many important cities in the USA, for example New York, one of the largest cities in the world, a great seaport and financial centre, Chicago near the Great Lakes, one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA, and the second largest after New York. Boston is one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. Now it is a big cultural centre with three universities. Los Angeles in California is a centre of modern industries and show business. Other big cities in the USA are Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, Detroit etc.
The USA as an independent state was set up by the Constitution in 1787. Under the Constitution the federal government is divided into three branches. The legislative branch is exercised by the Congress. The Congress consists of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 100 senators and 435 members in the House of Representatives. The executive branch is .leaded by the President chosen in nation-wide elections every four years together with the Vice-President. The judicial branch is made up of Federal District Courts, 11 Federal Courts and the Supreme Court. Federal judges are appointed by the President for life. There are two main political parties in the USA: the Republicans and the Democratics.
From the beginning of the twentieth century the USA became the world’s leading country.

  7. American way of life
The United States of America is always heard. This country is full of contradictions, but tourists who have visited it, come back contented and fascinated by it. Americans are a sociable and hospitable people, and to understand their way of life, you need to spend some time in their midst, to live among them. Americans are simple in communication, friendly to guests and strangers. They easily lead friends who are sincere in communication, but at the same time they live in houses fenced with a fence or lawn, and never are interested in the affairs of neighbors. They never discuss politics, religion and income in casual conversations.
Most Americans live in the affairs and concerns of their families and homes. They keep their homes and lawns clean, and love to do any homework on their own. Once a week they visit the supermarket and make large supplies of products. They do not like cash, they prefer credit cards. Americans are victims of advertising, and despite of the level of income, they always buy everything at a discount.
The exemplary American family gathers once a week for dinner to learn the weekly events and news. They rarely prepare food at home, like to eat in restaurants, cafes, pizzerias. In this regard the most of the population is suffering from obesity.
Teenagers moonlight on different jobs: washing machines, cutting lawns, working as waiters. At 16 years old they get a driver’s license and have their own car.
Almost all Americans are involved in public joint activities: attending various courses, playing tennis and golf, clubs, charity, church meetings once a week. Americans are sure that the person himself is building his own destiny, so from a small age, special emphasis is placed on upbringing and education. They do everything themselves, their own mind, and not for beautiful eyes. That is why they have a high standard of living.

  8. There are very many large cities in the USA.
Washington, the capital of the United States of America, is situated on the Potomac River. In comparison with such ancient historical cities as, for example, Rome, London, Moscow or Paris, Washington is quite young. The capital owes much to the first Presidento f the USA — George Washington. It was G. Washington, who chose the place for the capital and laid in 1790 the corner-stone of the Capitol, where Congress sits. Washington has many historical places. The largest and highest among the buildings is the Capitol with its great House of Representatives and the Senate chamber. There are no sky-scrapers in Washington because no other building must be higher than the Capitol.
New York is the largest city in the USA and the biggest sea-port. It is situated in the mouth of the Hudson River. New York was founded by the Dutch. It is interesting to know that Manhattan Island — the central part of New York — was bought from the local Indians by the Dutch for 24 dollars. That was the most profitable commercial deal in the US history. Today Manhattan is the heart of business and commercial life of the country. New York is the city of skyscrapers. The highest of them is the 102–storeyed building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway, there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.
Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.
Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest after New York.
Los Angeles, in California, is the centre of modern industries. Not far from Los Angeles there is Hollywood, the centre of the US film industry.

  12. Every nation has different customs and traditions, its own way of life.
In Europe there are people who have lived in the same house and been in the same job for 20, 30 or more years. That’s not the American way of life. The Americans love change, they call it the spirit of adventure, a spirit that they think is more characteristic of America than of Europe. They like to move away, to change houses and jobs.
While the Englishman thinks it is ill mannered to ask private questions, the American doesn’t feel that at all. He will tell you all about himself, his wife and family, and ask where you have come from, what your job is, how you like America and how long you are staying. The American prefers sociability. In his home he doesn’t object to being seen by everyone — he actually likes it.
With this sociability goes overwhelming hospitality. A national Thanksgiving Day is perhaps the only holiday spent by the Americans at home. Table decorations follow a traditional pattern — a harvest of Indian corn, apples, oranges, walnuts and grapes. Flowers also bring the fall scene indoors. The centrepiece is the traditional roast turkey.
Still another American tradition concerns Halloween. Its origin dates back hundreds of years to the Druid festival. The Druid New Year began on November 1, marking the beginning of winter and the reign of the Lord of Death. The custom of telling ghost stories on Halloween comes from the Druids. On this occasion children usually wear ghost costumes or false faces. They also carve out rounded eyes in pumpkins and put burning candles inside them to make them visible from far away.
In Texas, where the West begins, the biggest annual festival — the Fat Stock Show — is held. Its rodeo, hold together with the stock show, is the biggest indoor rodeo on the earth.
And, of course, no nation can exist without humour. As they themselves say, an American must have one wife, two cars, three children, four pets, five suits, six acres, seven credit cards — and is lucky to have eight cents in his pocket.

  14. I think everybody who is planning to visit any foreign country, should understand that he will not avoid the culture shock. Naturally, someone is affected with it more strongly, and someone almost doesn’t notice it, but always there is a culture shock! I want to say that there can be more than one shock. I’ll share my impressions and whether I felt a cultural shock being in another country or not.
This summer it was the first time I have been abroad and have felt the atmosphere of another world! Having participated in the program «Work & Travel», I visited the United States of America. The United States is a country where people have anotherworld-view, have another culture and traditions. The Americans have their own principles and symbols, which they value very much. Therefore, finding yourself being in their midst, you involuntarily start to feel ill at ease.
When I arrived to the U.S., I was happy realizing that I`m on the another continent, in New York, in Manhattan! In such moments you are full of emotion! But it doesn’t last for a long time. Concerns and problems begin to fill in your mind. There are no friends nearby, parents are far away, and everybody around speaks another language. At that time the culture shock begins to appear.
At first I missed my parents and home very much. I liked everything, but I knew that all that wasn`t native for me. In the first three weeks, during which I was getting to know America closer and closer, I definitely decided that I don’t want to live in the U.S. It’s much better to live in the native country and just to travel into the others. Now I can’t say what Ididn’t like in America in that period, but I was confident that I can live only in Russia! At that time I was ran by the same culture shock.
I didn’t intend to fight with it. Day after day I found new occupations for myself, visited new places and met new people. Gradually I began to realize that it became more interesting to be in ambient atmosphere which is alien to me. My first negative impression was replaced by curiosity and a desire to discover something new. And then I began to feel how a new cultural shock started appear that imprinted on me much stronger.
I lived in a small town of Portland on the Atlantic coast. This neat and comfortable town receives thousands of visitors from different spots around the world. It seemed like every resident was waiting just for you. Undoubtedly, I was especially impressed by the relationships between people. For every situation the absolute equality of strangers and mutual respect are inherent.
Courtesy, understanding and frank support come from most of the passers-by. I often was looking for different objects, and always passers-by didn’t remain indifferent. Strangers were willing to help me, to show the necessary road or to the desired location. Once, I was offered the help of a girl from a passing car. She noticed me walking with the map and didn’t hesitate to stop with the desire to help.
A kind smile, the ubiquitous apologies for the slightest inconvenience and wishes of a good day assuredly have impressed me! Also, I could not help noticing a high degree of confidence. Most clearly I remember the case at the station in one of the closest islands, where bikes were provided for rent. The best way to enjoy the beauties of the island – to take a bike and explore every small place of the earth, which is washed by the ocean from all sides. When I got a bicycle I wasn’t asked for any documents in pledge. Arriving at the end of the day to return it to the station, I expected to meet with the employee, who would put a bike to the parking himself. Instead, I saw an inscription on the fence «Please do not take bikes after 6 pm» and placed it myself. There were a lot of interesting stories, and after each respect to the Americans only increased.
As I was staying in the city, the culture shock was growing! I can’t not help saying about the impression which was made by Americans’ attitude to the culture. Very small in area city has managed to accommodate dozens of architectural sights, historical monuments, beautiful parks and squares. Every important event in the history of the city and the country is not forgotten and displayed in the original monument.
There are a lot of picture galleries and thematic museums which are opened for everybody who likes arts. It’s very surprising that visiting many world famous exhibition centers, such as National Gallery of art or National Air and Space Museum in Washington is free. It’s a unique opportunity to learn about global arts and increase your own level of culture.
During this summer I visited several annual festivals, weekly live music concerts of young performers. The big amount of different tours by unusual outward buses and active participation of every inhabitant of the country in national holidays – all that surprised me and it really caused a cultural shock.
I want to note one more feature of American life, the impressions of which, I think, has also become part of the culture shock. I’m talking about the opportunity of freely and easily enjoying nature. Americans provide a lot of ways of plunging into nature environment and feel its power. Walking on water among the islands and on a boat in the moonlight, sailing on a yacht with a sail on the fast waves on the wild places with cries of seagulls, rafting and bike riding in the deep forests – all this you could try, being in a small town of Portland.
I can tell a long story about what I remember from the summer tour. Now I remember the first drops of rain that fell on me in the U.S., and sadness that I felt when leaving this terrific place. I remember the meetings and I don’t want to remember the moment of parting. This trip allowed me to see the world in new ways, taught me a lot and I got a great life experience.
A lot of days I spent like in a fairy tale! I close my eyes and I see a bright light of the lighthouse shining in the infinite distance, the flight of seagulls, reflections of lights in the water. I remember the sound of the surf and liners’ whistles! I remember my first working day. What my job taught me. But I`m glad – I`m really glad that I`m back in Russia! Here I was born, here is my family and here is my home! There is no any country which can replace my motherland! Nevertheless I`m happy that I managed to discover the new frontiers of our world, to open an interesting country USA! I`m happy that I have been there!

  15. The USA has its own federal holidays. Together with international holidays, like New Year and Christmas, the Americans celebrate a number of their own ones. They have got two military holidays. Summer in the USA finishes with Labor Day which symbolizes the end of the vacations. Also in America people celebrate such holidays as St. Valentine’s Day, Halloween and St. Patrick’s Day. These holidays are very colorful, cheerful and each of them brings unique atmosphere. So, no wonder, that a tradition to celebrate them has spread over Исправлено: them have spread over the Atlantic Ocean. It is important to mention that the Americans are family people and they try to spend all the holidays together with their relatives exchanging presents and having fun.

  16. American holidays are strikingly different in origin and show surprising similarities in the manner of their celebration. No matter what the holiday’s origin is, they all seem to be the same thing. A holiday has simply become, for most Americans, a day off from work, though some (for example, Thanksgiving and Christmas) retain some individuality.
The major holidays in the USA are:
    New Year’s Day, January, 1st:
People stay awake until after midnight on December 31st to “watch the Old Year out and the New Year in.” Many parties are given on this night. Theatres, night clubs, restaurants are crowded. When midnight comes, they greet the New Year: people gather in the streets of big cities, they ring bells, blow whistles and automobile horns, some shoot off guns and firecrackers.
    Valentine’s Day, February, 14th:
It is not a national holiday. Banks and offices do not close, but it is a happy little festival in honour of St Valentine, patron of sweethearts and lovers. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by the exchange of “valentines.” A “valentine” may mean a special greeting card or a little present. The greeting cards are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts.
    Washington’s Birthday, February, 22d:
In addition to commemorating the birth of the United States’ first President, it’s a great day for shoppers. The department stores of Washington, DC, stated a national tradition of sales marked by unusual bargains. It is not a national holiday. Many schools, offices and banks close for this day, some stay open. The US Congress observes the birthday of George Washington with speeches and readings from his works.
    Easter:
Easter is in memory of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon between March, 22, and April, 25. The 40 days before Easter are called Lent. Just before Easter, schools and colleges usually close. Students have a week or ten days of spring vacation. Easter is a church holiday, and many churches have an outdoor sunrise service. People give each other presents of eggs which are the symbol of new life. There is a popular belief that wearing three new things on Easter will bring good luck throughout the year.
    Memorial Day, May, 30th:
It is a national holiday. Schools, banks and offices close for the day. On that day, Americans honour the servicemen who gave their lives in past wars. Schools, clubs and churches decorate the cemeteries. They put up the flags on the graves of the army, navy and airmen. They hold memorial services in churches, halls, parks and cemeteries. In addition to solemn services Memorial Day is often marked by other, more joyful ceremonies: colourful parades, sports competitions.
    Independence Day, July, 4th:
On this day, in 1776, America signed the Declaration of Independence. It is a national public holiday celebrated with fireworks and speeches praising “Americanism, democracy, free enterprise”.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September:
It is a holiday of recreation. It marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. Vacation time is over. Resorts, camps and beaches close … Parents go to summer camps and take their children back home.
    Halloween, October, 31st:
Halloween is the day or evening before All Saints’ Day. Halloween customs date back to a time when people believed in devils, witches and ghosts. They thought that these evil spirits could do all kinds of damage to property. Some people tried to ward off witches by painting magic signs on their barns. Others tried to scare them away by nailing a piece of iron, such as a horseshoe, over the door. Now most people do not believe in evil spirits. On this day they just have a nice holiday. Children dress up as ghosts and witches and go out into the streets to beg. They go from house to house and say: “Trick of treat!”, meaning “Give me a treat or I’ll play a trick on you”. People give them candy, cookies and apples. A favourite custom is to make a jack-o’-lantem. Children scrape out a pumpkin and cut the outlines of eyes, nose and mouth in its side. They light a candle inside the pumpkin to scare their friends. This custom refers to a man named Jack who still wanders around the earth lighting his way with a pumpkin lantern.
    Veterans Day:
On this day, the radio and television broadcast services held at the National Cemetery in Arlington. High officials come from Washington to attend these services. They place a wreath of flowers at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All stand in silence for a few minutes at eleven o’clock to honour the memory of the servicemen killed in the two World Wars.
Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November:
In the USA it is a national holiday. It was first celebrated in 1621 by the Pilgrim Fathers after their first good harvest. Thanksgiving is a family day, for it is customary for all members of the family to gather at the home of their parents. The family eats a large traditional dinner, usually with turkey, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.
    Christmas Day, December, 25th:
It is usually a one-day official holiday, but it is preceded and followed by festive parties, and marked by special church services, gift-giving and feasting. Christmas is a family holiday. Schools and colleges close between Christmas and New-Year’s Day. People stay at home and spend the time with their families. Everybody tries to come home for Christmas. People send cards or Christmas greetings to family and friends away from home. Every family tries to have a Christmas tree, which is beautifully decorated. Santa Claus comes from the North Pole in his sleigh, dressed in red cap and jacket, entering the house from chimney. He is a merry and fat individual. He has gifts of whatever kind you may wish for — nothing is too fabulous nor too trivial for him to provide.

Over the last 400 years millions of people have come to start a new life in this “New World”. The people of the United States are a mixture of many different nationalities. These different people brought to their new land a wonderful mixture of customs and traditions. The German brought Christmas trees. The Irish brought St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The Scots brought Halloween. The US government has three branches. The 1st branch is the Congress. The Congress is a meeting of representatives from all states. The people elect those representatives. The Congress makes the laws that everybody must obey. The Congress meets in the US Capitol in Washington, D.C. The Congress is divided into two parts, the Senate and the House of Representatives. Every state, no matter how large or small, sends two people to the Senate. These people are called senators. There are one hundred senators in the Senate. A senator’s term is six years. Each state also sends people to the House of Representatives. They are called congressmen or congresswomen. The number of congressmen from each state depends on the number of people who live in the state. All in all there are 425 congressmen in the House of Representatives. A representative’s term is two years. The Constitution gives many powers to the Congress. One important power of the Congress is the power to declare war. The 2nd branch of government is the President and his helpers. They carry out the laws that the Congress makes. The President signs bills and then they become law. The Vice President and members of the Cabinet help the President to make decisions. The US President is Commander in Chief of the country’s armed forces. A person who wants to become President must be at least 35 years old and must live in the United States for at least 14 years before becoming President. The President’s term is four years and one can be President for one or two terms, but not longer. The 3rd branch of government is the Supreme Court. It is made up of nine judges – the most important judges in the land. They have to make sure that the President and the Congress follow the Constitution. Americans are very proud of their Constitution. It was written more than 200 years ago and it is still working!
