New Year in Russia is the most awaited, beautiful and fabulous holiday. Every year, Russians celebrate it on the night of December 31 to January 1. Already at the beginning of December in all cities of Russia streets are decorated with colored lights and lanterns, huge, green Christmas trees are being installed, which shine from a variety of colored light bulbs and Christmas tree decorations. New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much, especially little children. People don’t go to work on that day, and children don’t go to school. New Year is considered a family holiday and is usually celebrated at home.
People buy a lot of tasty food and drinks and decorate their houses with garlands, candles and toys. They usually have a beautiful fir-tree, which stands in the corner of the room. Parents put presents for their children under these trees.

Preparations for this celebration are starting early. Everything begins with general cleaning. Than rooms are decorating with beautiful toys, garlands, holiday lights and candles. But most beautiful decorations are New Year and Christmas wreaths with conifer branches, bright ribbons and figures of angels.
Dishes on holyday table are always special. And the most important moment of celebration is coming of New Year with chiming clock. Last toll marks beginning of grand firework which may last for whole hour. Than all guests, relatives and friends, begin celebrations with dances and contests which last for the whole night. And first thing to do at next is to check all presents.
It is best when whether at New Year is cold and snowy. Colorful lights are flashing in all windows. Everybody is celebrating and having fun. Apparently because New Year is mutual celebration it is so much fun to celebrate it.

New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.
Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.

We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.
Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, “Best wishes for the New Year!”
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.
The New Year’s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.
It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year’s Eve.
I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

In England the New Year is not as widely or as enthusiastically observed as Christmas. Some people ignore it completely and go to bed at the same time as usual on New Year’s Eve. Many others, however, do celebrate it in one way or another, the type of celebration varying very much according to the local custom, family tradition and personal taste.
The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o’clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. It is an indication of the relative unimportance of the New Year in England that the television producers seem unable to find any traditional English festivities for their programmes and usually show Scottish ones.
January 1st, New Year’s Day, is now a public holiday, fortunately for those who like to celebrate most of the night. Some people send New Year cards and give presents but this is not a widespread custom. This is the traditional time for making “New Year resolutions”, for example, to give up smoking, or to get up earlier. However, these are generally more talked about than put into practice.

New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much, especially little children. People don’t go to work on that day, and children don’t go to school. New Year is considered a family holiday and is usually celebrated at home.
People buy a lot of tasty food and drinks and decorate their houses with garlands, candles and toys. They usually have a beautiful fir-tree, which stands in the corner of the room. Parents put presents for their children under these trees.
In the evening on the 31st of December people see the old year in. People enjoy their holiday dinner in a good company. There are many different concerts and shows on TV, and at midnight the president addresses people with traditional words of congratulation. Young people usually organize a dance party or go out to celebrate New Year and to watch fireworks. One of the most favorite and greatest holidays in Russia is New Year. Towns and villages are getting ready for the celebration two months in advance. People start to buy presents for friends and families, think about menu for New Year’s dinner, decorate houses and gardens. Children especially adore this holiday.
First of all all schools have Christmas celebration. This is special magical time when pupils dress up in funny costumes, learn poems and songs, dance around Christmas tree and have fun.
The parents prepare presents for their children, cook family dinner, invite relatives and friends and watch New Year’s programs.
In every town in the center the government put a big Christmas tree. At night December 31 people from all the town and close villages come to the center for concert program, dance at the disco, congratulate each other and make pictures.
It’s a beautiful holiday for adults and children. New Year in Russia has a specific charm, because it’s usually snowy and frosty outside. What can be better playing snowballs or making a snowman. The is magic in the air all around. People make a wish and get ready to start a new life in a new year.
All my family is Russian. Couple of times we celebrated New Year in hot countries, but the feeling is completely different. New Year is the best of holydays. At New Year’s Eve always appears this strange expectation of something big, new and great. Joyful atmosphere is all around. Everybody is busy picking nice Christmas trees, presents and feasts for holyday table. It seems like fairytale since childhood.
Preparations for this celebration are starting early. Everything begins with general cleaning. Than rooms are decorating with beautiful toys, garlands, holiday lights and candles. But most beautiful decorations are New Year and Christmas wreaths with conifer branches, bright ribbons and figures of angels.
Dishes on holyday table are always special. And the most important moment of celebration is coming of New Year with chiming clock. Last toll marks beginning of grand firework which may last for whole hour. Than all guests, relatives and friends, begin celebrations with dances and contests which last for the whole night. And first thing to do at next is to check all presents.
It is best when whether at New Year is cold and snowy. Colorful lights are flashing in all windows. Everybody is celebrating and having fun. Apparently because New Year is mutual celebration it is so much fun to celebrate it.

My father is excellent at cooking so he always makes meat dumplings, cooks chicken with oranges and his special vegetable pie. My brother and I cook some salads and my mother bakes fruit tarts. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.
I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

My mum and I decorate our flat with tinsel of different colours. We also decorate the New Year tree with colourful lights, tinsel, toys and balls. In Russia all the cities are decorated and so is Krasnoyarsk. Families go shopping and buy various presents. My mother and I choose presents together. Some people make presents themselves. And all people put presents under the tree. The Russian people also prepare a traditional New Year dish. It’s a pancake. I like them very much. At New Year my family first cooks Russian salad. We cook meat in aspic, beetroot salad, chicken, potatoes, herrings in a “fur muff” and pickled vegetables. We also buy caviar and tangerines. They are delicious!
At Christmas people in Russia go to churches. At Christmastime they tell fortunes, eat pancakes, wear costumes and masks, and some people swim in an ice hole. In Krasnoyarsk is the river Yenisey. At Christmas “walruses” swim in it. In winter it is very cold to swim in the river but I know that they will be healthy. In the past the Russian people also sang “kolyadki”, danced in a circle and played near the bonfire at Christmas. It is dangerous. But in the past it was our tradition.

Holidays are very pleasant days, because these are days when people don’t have to work, but have an opportunity to relax, meet friends, give presents and say many pleasant words to people whom they love. New Year is one of these holidays. The New Year’s festivities begin on December 31 and continue into the early hours of January 1.
New Year is a great holiday. Everybody likes it very much. Especially this holiday is loved by children. New Year is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home with members of the family and friends. People decorate their houses, send greeting cards and buy gifts for kids, relatives and friends. A New Year’s tree is a symbol of celebration. It is usually covered with coloured balls and strings of coloured lights.
New Year’s Eve is a time for fun. People spend the holiday at home or in restaurants. The most popular New Year’s Eve drink is champagne. Champagne is the drink that symbolizes celebration and it is often served for the midnight toast. At 12 o’clock everybody raises a glass of champagne and says “Happy New Year!” New Year’s Eve festivals often continue until two or three o’clock in the morning.
New Year’s Day is a special day. Many people make New Year resolutions, give up bad habits or plan for future. From the ancient times to the present New Year’s customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future.

New Years Celebrations Around the World 2012
New Year is the most long-awaited (долгожданный) holiday. Many people associate it with magic and gifts. First of all it is surrounded by the wonderful smell of tangerines and Christmas trees, which helps to create a festive mood (праздничное настроение). People of all ages truly (искренне) believe that in New Year their goals (цели) and wishes will come true.
New Year is an international holiday, but in every country it is celebrated in many different ways (разными способами) and each family has their own traditions. For example, in Australia, people celebrate the New Year on the beach or go on picnics with friends. In Italy, the New Year begins on January 6. Here people believe in the good fairy Befana, who gives stars and gifts for everyone. In Israel, people at on the New Year eat only sweets and avoid bitter (горький) food. In Spain on this day there is a tradition to swallow (глотать) one grape (виноград) for every time the bell chimes (звон курантов) and make a wish.
On New Year my family and I decorate the house and the Christmas tree and give each other gifts, wishing success (успех) in the New Year.
New Year’s Eve is my favorite holiday and I always look forward (ждать с нетерпением) to it.
What is New Year’s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year’s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year’s day is different from the American New Year because we don’t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year’s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians’ New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don’t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake ” Banh Chung”?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.
Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called ” Tet Nguyen Dan”?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

I help my mother to prepare a festive table on December 31. New Year’s Eve always seems to me magical and unforgettable. At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them. Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.
Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.
My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.
For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.
At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

We always celebrate New Year at home. A week before the holiday we begin to decorate our house with lights and garlands. We also put up a New Year tree and decorate it with balls, cones, icicles and other toys, tinsel and lights. Under the tree we usually put statuettes of Father Frost and Snow Maiden. We put New Year presents there too.
On the 31st of December we always cook salads. My mother usually roasts meat and boils potatoes. She always bakes our favourite Napoleon cake. We watch New Year programmes and films on TV.
At about ten o’clock we all sit down at the table and have a meal. Just before midnight we light sparklers and my father opens a bottle of champagne. We watch the president’s speech on TV, and then while the clock is striking midnight, we make wishes and drink champagne. After that we go to the balcony to watch fireworks.
When we come back into the room we open our presents. I usually get a lot of presents for the New Year. And I always try to give presents to my parents, grandparents and friends.

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year’s Day, Christmas, Women’s Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.
I like New Year’s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.
Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.
The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work.
We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.
Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, “Best wishes for the New Year!”
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.
The New Year’s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.
It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year’s Eve.
I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

In England the New Year is not as widely or as enthusiastically observed as Christmas. Some people ignore it completely and go to bed at the same time as usual on New Year’s Eve. Many others, however, do celebrate it in one way or another, the type of celebration varying very much according to the local custom, family tradition and personal taste.
The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o’clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. There is a lot of drinking, mainly beer, wine, gin and whisky; sometimes the hosts make a big bowl of punch which consists of wine, spirits, fruit juice and water in varying proportions. There is usually a buffet supper of cold meat, pies, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and biscuits. At midnight the wireless is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben, and on the hour a toasts and Auld Lang Syne (a song by Robert Burns) is sung. Then the party goes on.
Another popular way of celebrating the New Year is to go to a New Year’s dance. Most hotels and dance halls hold a special dance on New Year’s Eve. The hall is decorated, there are several different bands and the atmosphere is very gay.
The most famous celebration is in London round the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus where crowds gather and sing and welcome the New Year. In Trafalgar Square there is also a big crowd and someone usually falls into the fountain.
Those who have no desire or no opportunity to celebrate the New Year themselves can sit and watch other people celebrating on television. It is an indication of the relative unimportance of the New Year in England that the television producers seem unable to find any traditional English festivities for their programmes and usually show Scottish ones.
January 1st, New Year’s Day, is now a public holiday, fortunately for those who like to celebrate most of the night. Some people send New Year cards and give presents but this is not a widespread custom. This is the traditional time for making “New Year resolutions”, for example, to give up smoking, or to get up earlier. However, these are generally more talked about than put into practice.
Also on New Year’s Day the “New Year Honours List” is published in the newspapers, i.e. a list of those who are to be given honours of various types — knighthoods, etc.
