New Year Celebration in Russia
New Year in Russia is the most awaited, beautiful and fabulous holiday. Every year, Russians celebrate it on the night of December 31 to January 1. Already at the beginning of December in all cities of Russia streets are decorated with colored lights and lanterns, huge, green Christmas trees are being installed, which shine from a variety of colored light bulbs and Christmas tree decorations. Shop windows are decorated with Christmas lights. Everything around is soaked with magic and it seems as if you were caught in a fairy tale.
It is customary to celebrate New Year in Russia with family. People are carefully preparing for this holiday, and adults and children are looking forward to it. Fir-trees are set up and decorated in apartments and houses, everyone gives presents to each other, many guests are invited, and festive tables are laid with various treats. At 12 o’clock at night, when the Kremlin chimes on Red Square in Moscow begin to beat the last minute of the outgoing year, everyone makes wishes for the next year and raises their glasses of champagne. At this last minute of the year ended, the President of Russia congratulates all Russians on the New Coming Year. As soon as the chimes beat off the last blows, volleys of holiday fireworks and salute begin to explode from everywhere. The night sky is lit up with bright, colorful flashes. People congratulate each other on the New Year in coming, wish for the fulfillment of desire and all the best in the New Year.
Children are especially waiting for this holiday, as they believe that Santa Claus will come to them on a magical New Year’s Eve and put gifts under the Christmas tree, which they asked him in their letters to him. I think each family has its own tradition during this day and I want to share some of mine. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.
I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don’t go to school and my parents don’t go to work.
We usually have got a very interesting New Year’s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.
Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, “Best wishes for the New Year!”
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

In England the New Year is not as widely or as enthusiastically observed as Christmas. Some people ignore it completely and go to bed at the same time as usual on New Year’s Eve. Many others, however, do celebrate it in one way or another, the type of celebration varying very much according to the local custom, family tradition and personal taste.
The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o’clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. There is a lot of drinking, mainly beer, wine, gin and whisky; sometimes the hosts make a big bowl of punch which consists of wine, spirits, fruit juice and water in varying proportions. There is usually a buffet supper of cold meat, pies, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and biscuits. At midnight the wireless is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben, and on the hour a toasts and Auld Lang Syne (a song by Robert Burns) is sung. Then the party goes on.
Another popular way of celebrating the New Year is to go to a New Year’s dance. Most hotels and dance halls hold a special dance on New Year’s Eve. The hall is decorated, there are several different bands and the atmosphere is very gay.
The most famous celebration is in London round the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus where crowds gather and sing and welcome the New Year. In Trafalgar Square there is also a big crowd and someone usually falls into the fountain.
Those who have no desire or no opportunity to celebrate the New Year themselves can sit and watch other people celebrating on television. It is an indication of the relative unimportance of the New Year in England that the television producers seem unable to find any traditional English festivities for their programmes and usually show Scottish ones.
January 1st, New Year’s Day, is now a public holiday, fortunately for those who like to celebrate most of the night. Some people send New Year cards and give presents but this is not a widespread custom. This is the traditional time for making “New Year resolutions”, for example, to give up smoking, or to get up earlier. However, these are generally more talked about than put into practice.

What is New Year’s?

It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.
Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.
My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.
For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.
At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.

New Year in Russia is the most awaited, beautiful and fabulous holiday. Every year, Russians celebrate it on the night of December 31 to January 1. Already at the beginning of December in all cities of Russia streets are decorated with colored lights and lanterns, huge, green Christmas trees are being installed, which shine from a variety of colored light bulbs and Christmas tree decorations. Shop windows are decorated with Christmas lights. Everything around is soaked with magic and it seems as if you were caught in a fairy tale.
It is customary to celebrate New Year in Russia with family. People are carefully preparing for this holiday, and adults and children are looking forward to it. Fir-trees are set up and decorated in apartments and houses, everyone gives presents to each other, many guests are invited, and festive tables are laid with various treats. At 12 o’clock at night, when the Kremlin chimes on Red Square in Moscow begin to beat the last minute of the outgoing year, everyone makes wishes for the next year and raises their glasses of champagne. At this last minute of the year ended, the President of Russia congratulates all Russians on the New Coming Year. As soon as the chimes beat off the last blows, volleys of holiday fireworks and salute begin to explode from everywhere. The night sky is lit up with bright, colorful flashes. People congratulate each other on the New Year in coming, wish for the fulfillment of desire and all the best in the New Year.
Children are especially waiting for this holiday, as they believe that Santa Claus will come to them on a magical New Year’s Eve and put gifts under the Christmas tree, which they asked him in their letters to him. Holidays make our lives lively and interesting. We can have some fun, relax and don’t feel any pressure. Within the year there are a lot of holidays such as Mother’s Day, Victory Day, Christmas, May Day. Since childhood, my favorite holiday is New Year. We celebrate it on the 1st of January.

I think each family has its own tradition during this day and I want to share some of mine. In my household we usually start getting ready for New Year in advance: we find the best presents, buy lots of food and adorn our flat with different garlands and the New Year tree. Sometimes we create our own costumes for New Year party because it’s a funny tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year in unusual clothes.
My father is excellent at cooking so he always makes meat dumplings, cooks chicken with oranges and his special vegetable pie. My brother and I cook some salads and my mother bakes fruit tarts. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.
I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year’s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year’s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.
My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.
All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o’clock in the evening.
At 12 o’clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, “Best wishes for the New Year!”
I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

In England the New Year is not as widely or as enthusiastically observed as Christmas. Some people ignore it completely and go to bed at the same time as usual on New Year’s Eve. Many others, however, do celebrate it in one way or another, the type of celebration varying very much according to the local custom, family tradition and personal taste.
The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o’clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. There is a lot of drinking, mainly beer, wine, gin and whisky; sometimes the hosts make a big bowl of punch which consists of wine, spirits, fruit juice and water in varying proportions. There is usually a buffet supper of cold meat, pies, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and biscuits. At midnight the wireless is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben, and on the hour a toasts and Auld Lang Syne (a song by Robert Burns) is sung. Then the party goes on.
Another popular way of celebrating the New Year is to go to a New Year’s dance. Most hotels and dance halls hold a special dance on New Year’s Eve. The hall is decorated, there are several different bands and the atmosphere is very gay.
The most famous celebration is in London round the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus where crowds gather and sing and welcome the New Year. In Trafalgar Square there is also a big crowd and someone usually falls into the fountain.
Those who have no desire or no opportunity to celebrate the New Year themselves can sit and watch other people celebrating on television. It is an indication of the relative unimportance of the New Year in England that the television producers seem unable to find any traditional English festivities for their programmes and usually show Scottish ones.
January 1st, New Year’s Day, is now a public holiday, fortunately for those who like to celebrate most of the night. Some people send New Year cards and give presents but this is not a widespread custom. This is the traditional time for making “New Year resolutions”, for example, to give up smoking, or to get up earlier. However, these are generally more talked about than put into practice.
Also on New Year’s Day the “New Year Honours List” is published in the newspapers, i.e. a list of those who are to be given honours of various types — knighthoods, etc.

The most common type of celebration is a New Year party, either a family party or one arranged by a group of young people. This usually begins at about eight o’clock and goes on until the early hours of the morning. There is a lot of drinking, mainly beer, wine, gin and whisky; sometimes the hosts make a big bowl of punch which consists of wine, spirits, fruit juice and water in varying proportions. There is usually a buffet supper of cold meat, pies, sandwiches, savouries, cakes and biscuits. At midnight the wireless is turned on, so that everyone can hear the chimes of Big Ben, and on the hour a toast is- drunk to the New Year, and Auld Lang Syne (The days of long ago, a song by Robert Burns) is sung. Then the party goes on.
What is New Year’s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year’s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year’s day is different from the American New Year because we don’t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year’s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians’ New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don’t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake ” Banh Chung”?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.
Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called ” Tet Nguyen Dan”?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

In the city the streets and shop windows are decorated with bright and motley garlands. A huge Christmas tree is put at the main square. We begin to prepare for the holiday. We buy Christmas-tree decorations, tinsel and gifts for each other at New Year’s fairs. At the end of December we put artificial Christmas tree and decorate it for the holiday.
I help my mother to prepare a festive table on December 31. New Year’s Eve always seems to me magical and unforgettable. At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them. Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.

As for me, I start thinking of New Year presents at the beginning of December. I usually prepare handmade postcards for people I love and value. They say that I make fantastic postcards. That’s because I attended some scrapbooking classes several years ago.
Starting from the end of November all the shops, offices and other places in the street wear special, festive decorations and remind a fairy tale. As for my family, we start decorating the house in the middle of December.
My father usually buys a tall fir-tree and sets it up in the living-room. My brother and I happily decorate it with bright thematic toys, garlands and confetti.
For the New Year feast my mum cooks special dishes. Every year, on the 31st of December there are plenty of sweet cookies, some vegetable salads, a roasted chicken and a bottle of champagne on our table.
At midnight my dad fills everyone’s glasses with champagne and says the toast to welcome the coming year. We also turn on the TV to hear the chimes of the Kremlin. At the same time I know that somewhere in London my English penfriend listens to the chimes of famous Big Ben.
