Books in Our Life
Nowadays it’s
almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps,
there are more books on our planet than men alive.
Long before the
invention of printing people valued books as treasure troves of
the human knowledge and experience. Hand — written manuscripts
took months of writing and were collected by and kept in
monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between
three classes of them.
Firstly, books on
different branches of knowledge, works by brilliant minds of
mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous
dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read
at leisure.
Classics should
be taken a little at a time. One’s understanding of books by
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one’s
age and experience.
Serious books are
to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a
thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every
time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science
fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often
reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good
science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical
thinking, broader one’s outlook.
The same could be
said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute
details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces
of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of
psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying
goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of
knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can

дадут пищу для размышлений каждый раз, когда он перечитывает их.
Многие люди увлекаются чтением фантастики, в том числе научной,
или детективов. Конечно, есть свои преимущества и недостатки у
этого вида литературы, относящегося к «легкому чтиву».
На мой взгляд, хорошая фантастика
развивает воображение, логическое мышление, расширяет кругозор.
То же самое может быть сказано в
защиту детективов. Они описывают такие мелкие детали
повседневной жизни той или иной страны, которые очень интересны
любопытному читателю. Шедевры этого жанра сэра Артура Конан
Дойла, Агаты Кристи и других показывают глубины психологического
анализа, проникновения в человеческую натуру.
Как говорится в старой пословице, не
хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство
самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые
жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом.

A book is one of the greatest wonders of world. Why are so many people fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. You and characters of books can find yourselves in different countries and have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of our favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, to be true friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them to us. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland.
Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read “Alice in the Wonderland”, “Mowgli”? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island?
I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides, he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends.
If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it in a library and read it. Books are worth reading. Really, they are our good friends.
And now I try to give my arguments. Firstly, I think that if you read books much you will be an interesting interlocutor. I suppose it is important in our life. People will be reaching out for you. You can make friends without problems. Besides, if you read much you can give more arguments in any dispute. It gives some advantages to you. It is equally important. Moreover, I believe that books can replace various modern technologies. For example, it may be the tablet. As for me, I like how old books smell.
But some people do not agree to my opinion. They think that you can make use of the Internet. Of course, they are sure that it is the best way to find any information you need.
I disagree with them. Moreover I am of opinion that if you say something clever and interesting without the Internet, you will be looking much cleverer. It is quite honorable in modern life.
In conclusion, I can say that the role of books in our life is very important. Well — read people are so interesting. Of course, you may have your own point of view, but I have expressed mine.
В наши дни существуют различные точки зрения о роли книг. Некоторые люди думают, что роль книг в нашей жизни мала. Но другие не согласны с этой точкой зрения. Если рассматривать этот вопрос, то я могу сказать, что роль книг в нашей жизни очень важна.

Я не согласна с этой точкой зрения. Я считаю, если ты говоришь какие-либо умные, интересные вещи без Интернета, вы можете выглядеть намного умнее. Это почетно в современной жизни.
В заключение, я могу сказать, что роль книг в нашей жизни очень важна. Начитанные люди – интересные. Конечно же, вы можете иметь свою точку зрения, а я высказала свою.

It is definitely hard to imagine our life without books. I think it is one of the best inventions of the mankind. Many people all over the world like reading books. They often visit book shops and libraries and always find there something new and interesting. Such people who cannot imagine their lives without books are called bookworms.
Безусловно, трудно представить себе нашу жизнь без книг. Я думаю, что книга – это одно из лучших изобретений человечества. Многие люди по всему миру любят чтение книг. Они часто посещают книжные магазины и библиотеки и всегда находят там что-то новое и интересное. Таких людей, которые не могут представить свою жизнь без книг, называют книжными червями.
I am a bookworm, too. I have a very big collection of different books at home. Here you can find works of different authors: both classic and modern. There are even works of the ancient authors like Homer, for example. My grandmother began to collect books so she is a founder of our home library. I keep collecting books. As different members of our family take part in filling of our home library, it contains books of different genres.

However it cannot be compared with reading a printed book when you feel it in your hands and smell it.

It’s like real life in miniature!
A book can be a faithful friend and a teacher. Reading a book you open new horizons for yourself. A book can form our values and characters. And I find it quite convenient because it saves a lot of time. But I’m sure that no matter how convenient it is to get a book online, there is still no bigger pleasure than reading a printed one.
I’m fond of reading different genres like historical novels, detectives or science fiction, tales and legends. In my small library at home, I have some printed books which are important to me. Books like Alice in Wonderland, Lord of the Rings, Life of Alexander the Great and others. I like to re-read them from time to time, sometimes I make some notes on their pages and just smell the scent of childhood and magic.

“Books and friends should be few but good,” says an English proverb. “Except a living man there is nothing more wonderful than a book! They teach us and open their hearts to us as brothers,” wrote Charles Kingsley, an English writer of the 19th century. The book is certainly one of the greatest human inventions. It is a friend and a teacher. We learn many things by reading books. Books teach people to live. After reading some books it is easy to understand what should be done and what must not be done. One can learn a lot by reading books.
Different people like to read different kinds of books. It depends on one’s taste and character. Some people prefer detectives or science fiction. Others like historical books. Girls and women prefer love stories. Children like comics very much.
When you read books you find your selves in different lands. Together with the characters of the books you climb high mountains, go by ship in the stormy sea, fly into space. In a ward, you have a lot of adventures.
I’ve recently read a book which has made a very deep impression on me. It’s called Gone with the Wind and it makes really unforgettable reading. The author of the book is Margaret Mitchell.
This book gave birth to special inner world in my mind and in my soul. I like to imagine main characters of my favorite book, their clothes, and faces. It is difficult for me to leave the characters of my favorite novel in the end of the book.
Nowadays it is almost impossible to imagine our life without books. People have a wish to learn and books satisfy this desire. Books are the source of knowledge and the means of self-perfection. The book is also a thing that makes us think. Books make us think about real values of life and the main principles of our existence on the Earth. Books tell us about the world around us and teach us to be brave and honest, to understand other people, to help the old people and the younger ones, to love our Motherland, to be a true friend. They help us to understand what is right and what is wrong.
There are books of all kinds: novels, historical novels, a science fiction, a biography, a classic, detective stories, fairy tails, adventure stories, humorous stories, a folktale. Books can be interesting, entertaining, exciting, powerful, witty. Some people read for insruction, other people read just for pleasure. Reading books also helps us in our education.
We can find all kinds of books in the libraries. In some libraries we can also find books in many foreign languages. Reading rooms are open to all who wish to work there.
There are a lot of famous names in the World literature. Ukrainian literature is presented by such names as T.Shevchenko, P.Mirny, I.Kotlyarevsky, M.Kotsyubinsky, I.Franko, L.Ukrainka, L.Kostenko and many others.
I think that serious books should be read thoughtfully and maybe more than once. To a thinking reader they may give new food for thought every time he rereads them.
As for me, I like to read adventure stories because it’s very interesting for me to follow the plot. I like that the characters of adventure stories are always eager to help each other in difficult situations. It’s amazing to get involved into imaginary world created by an author. While reading I live dozen of lives, have hundreds of adventures, visit thousands of fantastic places in different corners of our planet.
Sometimes it is rather difficult to solve some problems in our life. I think that books can help us and give the necessary advice. Undoubtedly, books must be our friends during all our life.
As an old proverb says, ‘A man cannot live on bread alone’.

There are fiction and non-Fiction books. Fiction books are thought up by authors though they can be based on true events. Non-Fiction books contain real facts.
Fiction literature offers a great variety of genres to readers: romance, historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, fables, fairy-tales, drama, poetry. Non-Fiction includes biographies and autobiographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs. Every reader has his favourite genre corresponding to his taste and character.
Why Do People Read?
People read books because they are a valuable source of information and knowledge. Studying is one of the main reasons why people read books. It is impossible to imagine modern school without books.
The programme material is contained mostly in textbooks. Reading develops mind and thinking abilities. Books consider the eternal questions of life, so they help us in everyday situations and stimulate our self-perfection.
My Favourite Book
One of my favourite books is “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway. The fisherman Santiago is very devoted to the sea where he has been fishing since his early days. He has always been prepared for the battle with a big fish.
The battle is dangerous and hard but the old man morally wins the battle. His words “man can be destroyed but not defeated” are the main idea of Hemingway’s masterpiece. This book inspires me greatly especially at the most difficult moments of my life. Isn’t it the value of literature?

Ещё мне нравятся научные рассказы о животных и растениях. Книга – лекарство души. Заканчивая читать хорошую книгу, я всегда жалею, что она так быстро закончилась. Один известный писатель сказал, что книги – это друзья. Я полностью с ним согласна. Мне кажется, что книги играют важную роль в жизни и необходимы каждому человеку.

I am a very curious person. I like everything new, I like to study and learn different facts, watch movies I have never seen and communicate with people. But the biggest passion I have is reading books. If you ask me which books I like to read, I have no answer for you. I think every genre is interesting, every genre has particular style and structure. And because all people have different preferences and mood, I can say that I am crazy about reading in general.
Now I like to read psychological books. Sometime I need to reread is twice or three times to understand. But when I got it, I learn something new for myself. Maybe in future I will chose a profession of psychologist or teacher.
I read almost everyday. My perfect day is when I have no school and other things to do, but sit at home or in the park with a book. I can stay like this few hours. Then time pasts very fast to me. Honestly I prefer reading to any movie. Reading helps me to develop my imagination, to practice my skills of shorthand, to learn and memorize new words and phrases.
It was not always so. When I was a child I didn’t like reading. Maybe because my grandad had a huge library at home and he was pushing me to read every day. Another thing is that I didn’t read well. Honestly I was the worth in my class. One summer our teacher gave us a list of books to read and we had a problem to find all these books in the central library. But likely my grandad had all of them at home. My classmates came to me often and actually they were so jealous that I have all these books right here. So this is the way how I made many friends and often we used to read together. My reading was becoming better and one day I realized that I can not live without it. I finished to read the books from my teacher’s list very fast but didn’t stop. Soon I have got favorire genres and writers. And I can tell you if you want to spend your time with use or spend money with benefit, get one book and enjoy reading.

Nowadays it’s
almost impossible to imagine our life without books. Perhaps,
there are more books on our planet than men alive.
Long before the
invention of printing people valued books as treasure troves of
the human knowledge and experience. Hand — written manuscripts
took months of writing and were collected by and kept in
monasteries with utmost care. We can distinguish books between
three classes of them.
Firstly, books on
different branches of knowledge, works by brilliant minds of
mankind. Secondly, textbooks, reference books and numerous
dictionaries. And at last, books of all kinds and genres to read
at leisure.
Classics should
be taken a little at a time. One’s understanding of books by
Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, Mopassan and Balzak depends on one’s
age and experience.
Serious books are
to be read conscientiously and maybe more than once. To a
thinking reader they will provide new food for thought every
time he rereads it. Many people indulge in reading science
fiction, fantasy or detective stories. Of course, there are some
advantages and disadvantages of this kind of literature, often
reffered to as «easy reading».
As for me, good
science fiction and fantasy develop imagination, logical
thinking, broader one’s outlook.
The same could be
said in favour of detective stories. They reveal such minute
details of everyday life in this or that particular country that
are of greatest interest for a curious reader. The masterpieces
of this genre by Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle, Agatha Christie and others, show the depths of
psychological analysis, the insight into the human nature.
As an old saying
goes, man cannot live on bread alone. Books are the source of
knowledge and the means of self — perfection. Sometimes it is
difficult to solve some problems in life. I think that books can
help us. Books must be our friends during all our life.

этого вида литературы, относящегося к «легкому чтиву».
На мой взгляд, хорошая фантастика
развивает воображение, логическое мышление, расширяет кругозор.
То же самое может быть сказано в
защиту детективов. Они описывают такие мелкие детали
повседневной жизни той или иной страны, которые очень интересны
любопытному читателю. Шедевры этого жанра сэра Артура Конан
Дойла, Агаты Кристи и других показывают глубины психологического
анализа, проникновения в человеческую натуру.
Как говорится в старой пословице, не
хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство
самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые
жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом.
Книги должны быть нашими друзьями на протяжении всей жизни.

A book is one of the greatest wonders of world. Why are so many people fond of reading? The world of books is full of wonders. You and characters of books can find yourselves in different countries and have a lot of adventures. The book is a faithful friend. They form our values and characters. We try to look like the characters of our favourite books: to be brave, honest, not to be silly and greedy, to be true friends. We enjoyed the beauty and wisdom of fairy-tales and fables when we were babies and Granny read them to us. They taught us to be kind, clever, hardworking, to understand other people and help them. They teach us to understand the beauty of nature, take care of it, to love our homeland.
Books have been with us since childhood. Who hasn’t read “Alice in the Wonderland”, “Mowgli”? Who hasn’t travelled with Marry Poppins to her imaginary world? Who hasn’t imagined himself to be Robinson Crusoe on the deserted island?
I have read a lot of interesting books, but my favourite book is “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain. This well-known book is popular with children all over the world. The main character of the book is Tom Sawyer, who lived in a small town on the Mississippi River. He was a boy with a wild imagination. He and his friends often dreamed of different adventures. Tom was naughty, kind and brave. Besides, he was noble. I like this boy because he teaches us to be true friends.
If you are not fond of reading, take a book to your liking or borrow it in a library and read it. Books are worth reading. Really, they are our good friends.
And now I try to give my arguments. Firstly, I think that if you read books much you will be an interesting interlocutor. I suppose it is important in our life. People will be reaching out for you. You can make friends without problems. Besides, if you read much you can give more arguments in any dispute. It gives some advantages to you. It is equally important. Moreover, I believe that books can replace various modern technologies. For example, it may be the tablet. As for me, I like how old books smell.
But some people do not agree to my opinion. They think that you can make use of the Internet. Of course, they are sure that it is the best way to find any information you need.
I disagree with them. Moreover I am of opinion that if you say something clever and interesting without the Internet, you will be looking much cleverer. It is quite honorable in modern life.
In conclusion, I can say that the role of books in our life is very important. Well — read people are so interesting. Of course, you may have your own point of view, but I have expressed mine.

It is definitely hard to imagine our life without books. I think it is one of the best inventions of the mankind. Many people all over the world like reading books. They often visit book shops and libraries and always find there something new and interesting. Such people who cannot imagine their lives without books are called bookworms.
Безусловно, трудно представить себе нашу жизнь без книг. Я думаю, что книга – это одно из лучших изобретений человечества. Многие люди по всему миру любят чтение книг. Они часто посещают книжные магазины и библиотеки и всегда находят там что-то новое и интересное. Таких людей, которые не могут представить свою жизнь без книг, называют книжными червями.
I am a bookworm, too. I have a very big collection of different books at home. Here you can find works of different authors: both classic and modern. There are even works of the ancient authors like Homer, for example. My grandmother began to collect books so she is a founder of our home library. I keep collecting books. As different members of our family take part in filling of our home library, it contains books of different genres.

My name is Anastasia. I’m fourteen years old. I’m fond of reading. Books take an important place in my life. I was taught to like and take care of books from the childhood. I find out much new, useful and interesting information from books. They teach me to take right decisions and apprehend school subjects better. I can find an answer to any interesting question in books. I get knowledge from them. I like to read books about the Middle Ages and also I like historical and fantastic works. I plunge into another world at once. Also I like scientific stories about animals and plants. The book is a medicine for soul. When I finish reading of a good book I always feel upset because of its fast end. One famous writer said that books are our friends. I completely agree with him. It seems to me that books take an important place in our life and they are necessary for everybody.

Books are wonderful! They accompany us during all our life. When you read you enrich your mind and broaden your knowledge. People who read books are intelligent. Books are also an entertainment. It’s like real life in miniature!

“Books and friends should be few but good,” says an English proverb. “Except a living man there is nothing more wonderful than a book! They teach us and open their hearts to us as brothers,” wrote Charles Kingsley, an English writer of the 19th century. The book is certainly one of the greatest human inventions. It is a friend and a teacher. We learn many things by reading books. Books teach people to live. After reading some books it is easy to understand what should be done and what must not be done. One can learn a lot by reading books.
Different people like to read different kinds of books. It depends on one’s taste and character. Some people prefer detectives or science fiction. Others like historical books. Girls and women prefer love stories. Children like comics very much.
When you read books you find your selves in different lands. Together with the characters of the books you climb high mountains, go by ship in the stormy sea, fly into space. In a ward, you have a lot of adventures.
I’ve recently read a book which has made a very deep impression on me. It’s called Gone with the Wind and it makes really unforgettable reading. The author of the book is Margaret Mitchell.
This book gave birth to special inner world in my mind and in my soul. I like to imagine main characters of my favorite book, their clothes, and faces. It is difficult for me to leave the characters of my favorite novel in the end of the book.
Nowadays it is almost impossible to imagine our life without books. People have a wish to learn and books satisfy this desire. Books are the source of knowledge and the means of self-perfection. The book is also a thing that makes us think. Books make us think about real values of life and the main principles of our existence on the Earth. Books tell us about the world around us and teach us to be brave and honest, to understand other people, to help the old people and the younger ones, to love our Motherland, to be a true friend. They help us to understand what is right and what is wrong.
There are books of all kinds: novels, historical novels, a science fiction, a biography, a classic, detective stories, fairy tails, adventure stories, humorous stories, a folktale. Books can be interesting, entertaining, exciting, powerful, witty. Some people read for insruction, other people read just for pleasure. Reading books also helps us in our education.
We can find all kinds of books in the libraries. In some libraries we can also find books in many foreign languages. Reading rooms are open to all who wish to work there.
There are a lot of famous names in the World literature. Ukrainian literature is presented by such names as T.Shevchenko, P.Mirny, I.Kotlyarevsky, M.Kotsyubinsky, I.Franko, L.Ukrainka, L.Kostenko and many others.
I think that serious books should be read thoughtfully and maybe more than once. To a thinking reader they may give new food for thought every time he rereads them.
As for me, I like to read adventure stories because it’s very interesting for me to follow the plot. I like that the characters of adventure stories are always eager to help each other in difficult situations. It’s amazing to get involved into imaginary world created by an author. While reading I live dozen of lives, have hundreds of adventures, visit thousands of fantastic places in different corners of our planet.
Sometimes it is rather difficult to solve some problems in our life. I think that books can help us and give the necessary advice. Undoubtedly, books must be our friends during all our life.
As an old proverb says, ‘A man cannot live on bread alone’.

There are fiction and non-Fiction books. Fiction books are thought up by authors though they can be based on true events. Non-Fiction books contain real facts.
Fiction literature offers a great variety of genres to readers: romance, historical novels, science fiction, fantasy, thrillers, fables, fairy-tales, drama, poetry. Non-Fiction includes biographies and autobiographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, almanacs. Every reader has his favourite genre corresponding to his taste and character.
Why Do People Read?
People read books because they are a valuable source of information and knowledge. Studying is one of the main reasons why people read books. It is impossible to imagine modern school without books.
The programme material is contained mostly in textbooks. Reading develops mind and thinking abilities. Books consider the eternal questions of life, so they help us in everyday situations and stimulate our self-perfection.
My Favourite Book
One of my favourite books is “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway. The fisherman Santiago is very devoted to the sea where he has been fishing since his early days. He has always been prepared for the battle with a big fish.
The battle is dangerous and hard but the old man morally wins the battle. His words “man can be destroyed but not defeated” are the main idea of Hemingway’s masterpiece. This book inspires me greatly especially at the most difficult moments of my life. Isn’t it the value of literature?

Как говорится в старой пословице, не хлебом единым жив человек. Книги — источник знания и средство самосовершенствования. Иногда очень трудно решить некоторые жизненные проблемы. Я думаю, что книги помогают нам в этом. Книги должны быть нашими друзьями на протяжении всей жизни.

My name is Anastasia. I’m fourteen years old. I’m fond of reading. Books take an important place in my life. I was taught to like and take care of books from the childhood. I find out much new, useful and interesting information from books. They teach me to take right decisions and apprehend school subjects better. I can find an answer to any interesting question in books. I get knowledge from them. I like to read books about the Middle Ages and also I like historical and fantastic works. I plunge into another world at once. Also I like scientific stories about animals and plants. The book is a medicine for soul. When I finish reading of a good book I always feel upset because of its fast end. One famous writer said that books are our friends. I completely agree with him. It seems to me that books take an important place in our life and they are necessary for everybody.
Меня зовут Анастасия. Мне 14 лет. Я очень люблю читать. Книги в моей жизни имеют большое значение. Любить и беречь книги родители научили меня с детства. Из книг я узнаю много нового, полезного и интересного. Они учат меня принимать правильные решения и лучше воспринимать школьные предметы. В книгах я могу найти ответ на любой интересующий меня вопрос. Из них я черпаю новые знания. Люблю читать про средневековье, исторические и фантастические произведения. Я сразу окунаюсь в другой мир. Ещё мне нравятся научные рассказы о животных и растениях. Книга – лекарство души. Заканчивая читать хорошую книгу, я всегда жалею, что она так быстро закончилась. Один известный писатель сказал, что книги – это друзья. Я полностью с ним согласна. Мне кажется, что книги играют важную роль в жизни и необходимы каждому человеку.

I am a very curious person. I like everything new, I like to study and learn different facts, watch movies I have never seen and communicate with people. But the biggest passion I have is reading books. If you ask me which books I like to read, I have no answer for you. I think every genre is interesting, every genre has particular style and structure. And because all people have different preferences and mood, I can say that I am crazy about reading in general.
Now I like to read psychological books. Sometime I need to reread is twice or three times to understand. But when I got it, I learn something new for myself. Maybe in future I will chose a profession of psychologist or teacher.
I read almost everyday. My perfect day is when I have no school and other things to do, but sit at home or in the park with a book. I can stay like this few hours. Then time pasts very fast to me. Honestly I prefer reading to any movie. Reading helps me to develop my imagination, to practice my skills of shorthand, to learn and memorize new words and phrases.
It was not always so. When I was a child I didn’t like reading. Maybe because my grandad had a huge library at home and he was pushing me to read every day. Another thing is that I didn’t read well. Honestly I was the worth in my class. One summer our teacher gave us a list of books to read and we had a problem to find all these books in the central library. But likely my grandad had all of them at home. My classmates came to me often and actually they were so jealous that I have all these books right here. So this is the way how I made many friends and often we used to read together. My reading was becoming better and one day I realized that I can not live without it. I finished to read the books from my teacher’s list very fast but didn’t stop. Soon I have got favorire genres and writers. And I can tell you if you want to spend your time with use or spend money with benefit, get one book and enjoy reading.
