One of the most remarkable public events in Russia is the Victory Day. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. The holiday marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in the Second World War in 1945. It became the end of the Great Patriotic War for the USSR, which lost about 25 million citizens in the four years of fighting and starvation.
Every year all cities across the country have lots of parades and celebrations. Even though the fact that the holiday is celebrated cheerfully, May 9 is a sad day for the majority of our population. Many people have lost close relatives and friends in this terrible war. Almost every family in Russia has a person who didn’t return from the battlefield. A great number of people were seriously injured and became disabled. On this day we are grateful to our saviors, to those who sacrificed their lives for us. That’s why we try to celebrate this day with honors.
There are some traditions that we follow. We give flowers, usually red carnations, to veterans in the street and lay wreaths at war memorial sites. Neighborhood schools may host a program prepared by the students, featuring wartime songs and poetry. Also, there is St. George ribbon campaign, which has occurred on the eve of the Victory Day for nine years already. Millions of Russians and compatriots in 100 countries take part in this campaign. Orange–black ribbons handed out by volunteers in the streets are one more sign of our commemoration of the Great Victory. At home, we gather around a festive table to honor survivors and honor those who passed away. We may also watch a favorite Soviet film based on the events of World War II.
I think it’s a great day in our history, but some part of the younger generation doesn’t understand the importance of this event, which I think is disrespectful. My grandparents took part in this war, and I’m proud of them.

For me it’s a great honor to celebrate May 9 every year. Victory Day is one of the most important holidays in our family. The parents of my dad remember Great Patriotic War and the parents of my grandparents were fighting and very active participated in the war. My granny says we lost many relatives and friends of the family during the war. So since we won my family is always celebrating Victory Day.
At school we also have a great program. During the week we speak about war and Victory, invite veterans, give them some presents and have a nice concert at school.
At home we watch movies about the war. I am very happy that my family touch me respect veterans and that times.
We have a big photo album with very old pictures at home. But this is a story of my family and I want to take care about those memories. Few times my teacher asked me to bring album to school because there we have lots of pictures.
Sometimes I like to sit with my granny and watch them. She tells me about her memories, how hard was that time, that she was hungry often. I want to cry when I listen to her. And I am so much happy that she is alive and can share her memories with me and my brother.
I think we must always remember and respect this day. Many years ago people didn’t sleep, didn’t eat and fought for us. Today we can see this beautiful sky, towns, shops, happy families and people around. I really appreciate everything what they had done for us.
I can tell hundred stories that my grams had shared to me. But all of them are truth. Now I know that was awful time for everyone: for men, women, children. And after so many years we must do everything to safe this beauty and piece around us.

Целую неделю накануне праздника мы говорим о войне и победе, приглашаем ветеранов, дарим им подарки и организуем замечательный концерт с участием учеников. Дома мы смотрим фильмы о войне. Я безумно рада, что родители научили меня уважать ветеранов и те далёкие военные годы.
Дома у нас есть большой альбом с очень старыми фотографиями. А это уже история моей семьи и я хочу уберечь каждое воспоминание. Несколько раз мой учитель даже просил принести альбом в школу, потому что там множество интересных фото.
Иногда мне нравится сесть с бабушкой и разглядывать наш семейный фотоальбом. Она рассказывает о своих воспоминаниях, как сложно было жить в те времена и как часто приходилось голодать. Мне часто хочется плакать, когда я слушаю бабушку. И я так счастлива, что она до сих пор жива и делится со мной и моим братом теми воспоминаниями. Я уверена, что мы обязаны помнить и уважать те страшные годы. Много лет назад люди голодали, не спали и воевали за нас. Сегодня мы можем видеть красивое небо над головой, города, магазины, множествосчастливых семей и людей вокруг. Я очень ценю тех людей и их отвагу, ведь они столько сделали для нас.

My family respects and likes different holidays. We celebrate them all together and sometime invite other family members and friends.
But there are some holidays that we don’t celebrate, but speak about history and respect that tradition. Well I mean Victory Day. I think it’s a great and important holiday, that every person has to respect.
We celebrate Victory Day in May 9. This is the day when the Great Patriotic War was finished. Our people fought a lot and suffered too much. We didn’t expect the beginning of that war, but German soldiers attacked us. My grandparents and my great grandparents were protecting our country as much as they could, but many our relatives died. We have a photo album with some pictures of that time and keep this memories.
At school we speak a lot about the Great Patriotic War and organize concerts on Victory Day. We invite some veterans and give them presents.
In the evening I go to the center with all my family. Victory Day is a day off, so people can go out and enjoy this time. We have a great concert on that day, street market and huge fireworks. Everyone enjoys this holiday, because we don’t really know what tragedy had happened in past. We read a lot about it, we watch movies, listen to the stories but can not even imagine what the war is.
I always say a lot of thanks to my grandparents and all veterans who protected our country. They sacrificed themself to give us future that we have now. And we must remember it forever.

Моя семья уважает и любит разные праздники. Мы празднуем их все вместе, иногда приглашаем родственников и друзей семьи. Но есть праздники, которые мы не отмечаем, а скорее, вспоминаем и относимся с почтением к традициям. Я говорю о дне Победы. Я считаю его важным и великим днём, который должен уважать каждый человек. Everyone needs a rest after hard work and public holidays are simply perfect for that. There are several holidays in spring and one of them is May 9, known in Russia as Victory Day. Since its appearance this holiday has always been grandiosely celebrated. May 9th has a long history. Almost seventy years ago Germany surrendered to the Soviet Union. On this day the Great Patriotic Was in Russia came to an end. More than twenty-five million people died during four years. It goes without saying that the end of this fighting saved many more other lives. That’s why this day is so important for the nation. It is especially cherished by the war veterans. Some of them are still alive. Although they are rather old nowadays, they still eagerly participate in all celebratory events connected with the Victory Day. On this day adults don’t work and children can skip the school. In many large cities local authorities organize military parades and fireworks. Veterans are highly regarded on this day. Younger generation prepares all sorts of performances for them, gives them flowers, postcards and lots of attention. Sometimes they receive honors and valuable presents from the mayor of the city. One of the symbols of this holiday is the Ribbon of Saint George. You can see people in street wearing it. It’s featured even on the cars. Traditionally, concerts and other events are held in the central square or park. Those, who stay at home, watch old Soviet films about the Great Patriotic Wars. Russia is rich in different traditions. There are dates and events in our country that are memorable to all Russian people. Victory Day is the greatest holiday in our country. It marks the Victory of our country in World War II, the Victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders.
The main celebration is held in Moscow. In Moscow at Poklonnaya Hill was recently constructed the Memorial Complex to commemorate the Victory of our people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
The Victory Parade to celebrate the defeat of Hitler Germany was held on here on June 24, 1945 to the roll of drums, soldiers threw down 2 hundred enemy standards in front of the Mausoleum.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a simple and dignified memorial to the soldiers who died for the country in World War II. It is here that all delegations lay wreaths. You will see the eternal flame burning at the Tomb and sometimes you

In all the towns are decorations, flags and slogans in the streets, in the shop windows and on the front of large buildings. On Victory Day morning there are meetings and demonstrations of the veterans who fought in the Great Patriotic War. On that day there usually is military parade in all big cities of our country. There are a lot of people in the streets and squares. They are all celebrating their holiday. People put flowers at the tombs of the soldiers, who were killed during the war. They lay flowers to those who did not live to see the Victory. War veterans tell the children about the war and how they fought for Victory. In the evening there is usually a holiday salute and a minute of silence to remember all those who did not come back from the Great Patriotic War.
Russian people are open-hearted, hospitable and friendly. Love for freedom has been a national character of our people. When Russia was attacked by the enemy the Russian people rose up in defence of their Motherland.
No enemy has been able to conquer our country!
There are more than 13 “hero-cities” in Russia because they fought so heroically during the war. The great sacrifices which people of these cities and towns made for the freedom and independence of our country, the countless hardships they went through during the war, the selfless efforts in the rear and at the front were not in vain.
Volgograd is a legendary city, because here in 1943 the Soviet Army won the great and glorious victory over the fascists. The symbol of Volgograd is the Mamaev Hill. It was the centre of fighting during the heroic defence of Stalingrad. The centre of Volgograd is the Square of the Fallen Heroes. In the middle of it there is a granite obelisk at the foot of it you can see the Eternal Flame.
I live in a small village Markuchi. It is my Motherland and I love my native place very much. I consider that I am very patriotic and my tiny village is the best place in the world! There is a monument for the Fallen Soldiers in the centre of our village. Every year our inhabitants celebrate the Victory Day. It’s a pity, but there are no war veterans in our village already but we have 5 toilers of the rear.
Many old residents were children during the war, and their life was very difficult. We celebrate all of them, invite them to school on the holiday concert. Young people must not forget the heroes, they must be ready to defend their country against all enemies.
The civilization was not crushed by the World War II and the ruins provided the stimulus to build a way of life again. The people felt free to reinvent themselves.
I appeal to all who hold dear cause of peace:

По Красной площади проедут легендарные машины военных лет, будет показана новая современная техника:
новая модификация танка «Армата»;
обновленная машина «Тайфун»;
БМП «Бумеранг», др.
Зрители парада увидят некоторые модели военных летательных аппаратов: МиГ-31, Су-35, Су-27, др. В апреле Министерство обороны России создало специальный web-ресурс. На нем можно ознакомиться с движением техники, прохождения парадных расчетов, узнать о моделях военных машин, которые будут показаны на мероприятии. Парад должен стать наиболее масштабным и грандиозным, по сравнению со всеми проходящими до этого со дня окончания войны. Начнется главное событие – военный парад в десять часов утра. May 9, 1945 entered the history of mankind as the day of the Great Victory over fascist Germany.
During the war the Soviet people mobilized all the forces for the struggle against the enemy. The country lived in accordance with the appeal: ‘Everything for the front, everything for the victory’. Operations at the front were supported by the partisan movement.
More than one million people took part in the partisan movement. The victorious march of the Soviet troops began in Stalingrad where in winter of 1942-1943 an enemy grouping was surrounded and destroyed. That was a crucial turning point in the war. In the summer of 1943 tank and armour divisions of the nazis were routed near Kursk.
Then victorious battles on the Dnieper, in Byelorussia, Moldavia, Ukraine and the Baltic republics followed. In 1944 the Red Army reached the Soviet border in the west.

Until today, I parade to the victory day only for watching TV. I know that this day was a great victory of the red army and the Soviet people over the fascists Germany. This year our family decided to go to the city center at the Grand opening of the parade.
Coming out of the house to the street with us had a lot of people who were going to go on holiday. There are some traditions that we follow. We give flowers, usually red carnations, to veterans in the street and lay wreaths at war memorial sites. Neighborhood schools may host a program prepared by the students, featuring wartime songs and poetry. Also, there is St. George ribbon campaign, which has occurred on the eve of the Victory Day for nine years already. Millions of Russians and compatriots in 100 countries take part in this campaign. Orange–black ribbons handed out by volunteers in the streets are one more sign of our commemoration of the Great Victory. At home, we gather around a festive table to honor survivors and honor those who passed away. We may also watch a favorite Soviet film based on the events of World War II.
I think it’s a great day in our history, but some part of the younger generation doesn’t understand the importance of this event, which I think is disrespectful. My grandparents took part in this war, and I’m proud of them.

For me it’s a great honor to celebrate May 9 every year. Victory Day is one of the most important holidays in our family. The parents of my dad remember Great Patriotic War and the parents of my grandparents were fighting and very active participated in the war. My granny says we lost many relatives and friends of the family during the war. So since we won my family is always celebrating Victory Day.
At school we also have a great program. During the week we speak about war and Victory, invite veterans, give them some presents and have a nice concert at school.
At home we watch movies about the war. I am very happy that my family touch me respect veterans and that times.
We have a big photo album with very old pictures at home. But this is a story of my family and I want to take care about those memories. Few times my teacher asked me to bring album to school because there we have lots of pictures.
Sometimes I like to sit with my granny and watch them. She tells me about her memories, how hard was that time, that she was hungry often. I want to cry when I listen to her. And I am so much happy that she is alive and can share her memories with me and my brother.
I think we must always remember and respect this day. Many years ago people didn’t sleep, didn’t eat and fought for us. Today we can see this beautiful sky, towns, shops, happy families and people around. I really appreciate everything what they had done for us.
I can tell hundred stories that my grams had shared to me. But all of them are truth. Now I know that was awful time for everyone: for men, women, children. And after so many years we must do everything to safe this beauty and piece around us.

В школе у нас тоже предусмотрена определенная программа. Целую неделю накануне праздника мы говорим о войне и победе, приглашаем ветеранов, дарим им подарки и организуем замечательный концерт с участием учеников. Дома мы смотрим фильмы о войне. Я безумно рада, что родители научили меня уважать ветеранов и те далёкие военные годы.
Дома у нас есть большой альбом с очень старыми фотографиями. А это уже история моей семьи и я хочу уберечь каждое воспоминание. Несколько раз мой учитель даже просил принести альбом в школу, потому что там множество интересных фото.
Иногда мне нравится сесть с бабушкой и разглядывать наш семейный фотоальбом. Она рассказывает о своих воспоминаниях, как сложно было жить в те времена и как часто приходилось голодать. Мне часто хочется плакать, когда я слушаю бабушку. И я так счастлива, что она до сих пор жива и делится со мной и моим братом теми воспоминаниями. Я уверена, что мы обязаны помнить и уважать те страшные годы. Много лет назад люди голодали, не спали и воевали за нас. Сегодня мы можем видеть красивое небо над головой, города, магазины, множествосчастливых семей и людей вокруг. Я очень ценю тех людей и их отвагу, ведь они столько сделали для нас.

One of the most remarkable public events in my country is the Victory Day. It is traditionally celebrated on the 9th of May. This patriotic holiday commemorates the victory of the USSR over the Nazi Germany. Every year in honour of this day in all cities across the country lots of cheerful parades and celebrations are held.

My family respects and likes different holidays. We celebrate them all together and sometime invite other family members and friends.
But there are some holidays that we don’t celebrate, but speak about history and respect that tradition. Well I mean Victory Day. I think it’s a great and important holiday, that every person has to respect.
We celebrate Victory Day in May 9. This is the day when the Great Patriotic War was finished. Our people fought a lot and suffered too much. We didn’t expect the beginning of that war, but German soldiers attacked us. My grandparents and my great grandparents were protecting our country as much as they could, but many our relatives died. We have a photo album with some pictures of that time and keep this memories.
At school we speak a lot about the Great Patriotic War and organize concerts on Victory Day. We invite some veterans and give them presents.
In the evening I go to the center with all my family. Victory Day is a day off, so people can go out and enjoy this time. We have a great concert on that day, street market and huge fireworks. Everyone enjoys this holiday, because we don’t really know what tragedy had happened in past. We read a lot about it, we watch movies, listen to the stories but can not even imagine what the war is.
I always say a lot of thanks to my grandparents and all veterans who protected our country. They sacrificed themself to give us future that we have now. And we must remember it forever.

Моя семья уважает и любит разные праздники. Мы празднуем их все вместе, иногда приглашаем родственников и друзей семьи. Но есть праздники, которые мы не отмечаем, а скорее, вспоминаем и относимся с почтением к традициям. Я говорю о дне Победы. Я считаю его важным и великим днём, который должен уважать каждый человек. Мы отмечаем День Победы 9 мая. Это тот самый день, когда закончилась Великая Отечественная война. Наши люди сражались и страдали много. Мы не ожидали начала войны и солдаты напали на нас. Мои дедушки и бабушки защищали нашу страну, как могли и многие погибли в те годы. У нас есть альбом с фотографиями тех времён и мы бережно храним их.
В школе мы много говорим о Великой Отечественной войне и устраиваем концерт посвящённый дню Победы. Мы приглашаем ветеранов и дарим им подарки.
Вечером мы идём на центр города всей семьёй. В День Победы у всех выходной, поэтому, люди выходят на прогулку и наслаждаются этим временем. Everyone needs a rest after hard work and public holidays are simply perfect for that. There are several holidays in spring and one of them is May 9, known in Russia as Victory Day. Since its appearance this holiday has always been grandiosely celebrated. May 9th has a long history. Almost seventy years ago Germany surrendered to the Soviet Union. On this day the Great Patriotic Was in Russia came to an end. More than twenty-five million people died during four years. It goes without saying that the end of this fighting saved many more other lives. That’s why this day is so important for the nation. It is especially cherished by the war veterans. Some of them are still alive. Although they are rather old nowadays, they still eagerly participate in all celebratory events connected with the Victory Day. On this day adults don’t work and children can skip the school. In many large cities local authorities organize military parades and fireworks. Veterans are highly regarded on this day. Younger generation prepares all sorts of performances for them, gives them flowers, postcards and lots of attention. Sometimes they receive honors and valuable presents from the mayor of the city. One of the symbols of this holiday is the Ribbon of Saint George. You can see people in street wearing it. It’s featured even on the cars. Traditionally, concerts and other events are held in the central square or park. Those, who stay at home, watch old Soviet films about the Great Patriotic Wars. Thus, they commemorate soldiers who lost their lives in that cruel war. Those, who bravely fought but survived, were all given Red Star medals.

Russia is rich in different traditions. There are dates and events in our country that are memorable to all Russian people. Victory Day is the greatest holiday in our country. It marks the Victory of our country in World War II, the Victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders.
The main celebration is held in Moscow. In Moscow at Poklonnaya Hill was recently constructed the Memorial Complex to commemorate the Victory of our people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.
The Victory Parade to celebrate the defeat of Hitler Germany was held on here on June 24, 1945 to the roll of drums, soldiers threw down 2 hundred enemy standards in front of the Mausoleum.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It is a simple and dignified memorial to the soldiers who died for the country in World War II. It is here that all delegations lay wreaths. You will see the eternal flame burning at the Tomb and sometimes you

In all the towns are decorations, flags and slogans in the streets, in the shop windows and on the front of large buildings. On Victory Day morning there are meetings and demonstrations of the veterans who fought in the Great Patriotic War. On that day there usually is military parade in all big cities of our country. There are a lot of people in the streets and squares. They are all celebrating their holiday. People put flowers at the tombs of the soldiers, who were killed during the war. They lay flowers to those who did not live to see the Victory. War veterans tell the children about the war and how they fought for Victory. In the evening there is usually a holiday salute and a minute of silence to remember all those who did not come back from the Great Patriotic War.
Russian people are open-hearted, hospitable and friendly. Love for freedom has been a national character of our people. When Russia was attacked by the enemy the Russian people rose up in defence of their Motherland.
No enemy has been able to conquer our country!
There are more than 13 “hero-cities” in Russia because they fought so heroically during the war. The great sacrifices which people of these cities and towns made for the freedom and independence of our country, the countless hardships they went through during the war, the selfless efforts in the rear and at the front were not in vain.
Volgograd is a legendary city, because here in 1943 the Soviet Army won the great and glorious victory over the fascists. The symbol of Volgograd is the Mamaev Hill. It was the centre of fighting during the heroic defence of Stalingrad. The centre of Volgograd is the Square of the Fallen Heroes. In the middle of it there is a granite obelisk at the foot of it you can see the Eternal Flame.
I live in a small village Markuchi. It is my Motherland and I love my native place very much. I consider that I am very patriotic and my tiny village is the best place in the world! There is a monument for the Fallen Soldiers in the centre of our village. Every year our inhabitants celebrate the Victory Day. It’s a pity, but there are no war veterans in our village already but we have 5 toilers of the rear.
Many old residents were children during the war, and their life was very difficult. We celebrate all of them, invite them to school on the holiday concert. Young people must not forget the heroes, they must be ready to defend their country against all enemies.
The civilization was not crushed by the World War II and the ruins provided the stimulus to build a way of life again. The people felt free to reinvent themselves.
I appeal to all who hold dear cause of peace:
“Let us stop those who are trying to push the world into an abyss!
Let our voice sound as loud as never before!”

9 мая сегодня для каждого россиянина священный день, ветеранов, свидетелей войны, которые способны рассказать о ней новым поколениям, становится с каждой годовщиной меньше. Практически каждая живущая в России семья имеет отношение к прогремевшей войне, у кого-то не вернулся родной человек с фронта, многие военнослужащие получили тяжелые раны. Женщины также сражались, они считали священным долгом бороться и защищать Родину. Одни работали медиками, а другие участвовали в кровавых боях, многие тяжело трудились на военном производстве. Юбилейные торжества
В честь знаменательной даты, 70-летия Победы, будет проведен самый масштабный парад за современную историю. В мероприятии будут принимать участие шестнадцать тысяч военнослужащих, 194 боевые машины, 150 воздушных суден. По Красной площади проедут легендарные машины военных лет, будет показана новая современная техника:
новая модификация танка «Армата»;
обновленная машина «Тайфун»;
БМП «Бумеранг», др.
Зрители парада увидят некоторые модели военных летательных аппаратов: МиГ-31, Су-35, Су-27, др. В апреле Министерство обороны России создало специальный web-ресурс. На нем можно ознакомиться с движением техники, прохождения парадных расчетов, узнать о моделях военных машин, которые будут показаны на мероприятии. Парад должен стать наиболее масштабным и грандиозным, по сравнению со всеми проходящими до этого со дня окончания войны. Начнется главное событие – военный парад в десять часов утра. Торжественные мероприятия, парады организовывают также в других городах, где также будет представлена военная техника, прозвучат салюты: Санкт-Петербург, Калининград, Севастополь, Волгоград, др.
May 9, 1945 entered the history of mankind as the day of the Great Victory over fascist Germany.
During the war the Soviet people mobilized all the forces for the struggle against the enemy. The country lived in accordance with the appeal: ‘Everything for the front, everything for the victory’. Operations at the front were supported by the partisan movement.
More than one million people took part in the partisan movement. The victorious march of the Soviet troops began in Stalingrad where in winter of 1942-1943 an enemy grouping was surrounded and destroyed. That was a crucial turning point in the war. In the summer of 1943 tank and armour divisions of the nazis were routed near Kursk.
Then victorious battles on the Dnieper, in Byelorussia, Moldavia, Ukraine and the Baltic republics followed. In 1944 the Red Army reached the Soviet border in the west.

Until today, I parade to the victory day only for watching TV. I know that this day was a great victory of the red army and the Soviet people over the fascists Germany. This year our family decided to go to the city center at the Grand opening of the parade.
Coming out of the house to the street with us had a lot of people who were going to go on holiday.
