Great Britain, or The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is one of the most economically and culturally influential countries. Four parts of the state (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) are ruled by one monarch, the Government and the Parliament, although each part is autonomy, has unique mentality and culture. Great Britain was incredibly powerful in the past, as British Empire owing numerous colonies, but now does not lose ground as well.

The kingdom respects its traditions, so the British are thought to be conservative people. However, Great Britain became the hotbed of industrial revolution, and nowadays it has the improved postindustrial economy. Its capital, London, is a global trading and financial center. British cities (London, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow), as well as rural areas (picturesque hills, forests, and villages), are attractive for tourists.

Hi, everyone! If you’re an English learner you should be familiar with the country where people speak this language as the mother tongue. Furthermore, this knowledge is particularly important for better understanding and feeling the language. So, I’d like to let you know more about Great Britain, its inhabitants and their customs, and traditions.
Firstly, we should take into consideration the full name of this country – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the fact that it includes four magnificent countries: Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland. So Great Britain is really diverse and involves the features of its unique parts and their nationalities. Each country is charming on its own. Scotland is famous for its whiskey, kilts and amazing highlands. Ireland fascinates with its music, dances and Irish beer. England attracts people by its sights, phone boxes, red buses and such a special atmosphere.
As far as I know Great Britain is one of the biggest European countries, but it really differs from any other. First of all, it’s located on the British Isles and is separated from its neighbors by seas. This fact actually explains the main characteristics of the British — conservatism and isolation. Moreover, it’s a well-known fact that the UK has a unique polity — a constitutional monarchy which is the symbol of the country. The real power belongs to the parliament, but the monarch Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal family are of the great honor in the UK. They live in Buckingham palace in London, in the place which is famous for its guards and the great ceremony of their changing. Everyone who comes there wants to take a photo with the guard and make him move. As the nation with the Royal family, the British are known as very polite people with perfect manners.
As for me, I have never been to this country, but I dream to do it one day. I’m fascinated with British music, literature and especially the weather. I think the rainy and foggy weather covers some kind of mystery that I’d like to unravel.

The United Kingdom or The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the island state in the Western Europe.
The capital of Great Britain is London. It`s the cultural center of the country. There is an International London Heathrow Airport, a famous Tower Bridge over the river Thames, a Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery of Art and many other beautiful places to visit.
London is situated on the British islands and it is settled down on a zero meridian which is also called Greenwich.
The English sometimes callLondon The Big Smoke or The Great Smoke.
The are about 60 million people living in Great Britain. Most of them are English, Scottish and Irish.
They also have many traditions,like wearing kilts in Scotland and cooking special food for festivals. They celebrate many events in different ways. But all the members of the family take part in it.
People in Great Britain are kind and polite.
Many famous people was born and lived in Great Britain.
William Shakespeare is one of them. He wrote many plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet”, “Macbeth” and others. Most of them are tragedies.
Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He lived in Stratford – on – Avon with his wife Anne Hathaway and his children.
The best writer of his time was as good actor as a writer. He appeared in his own plays at the Globe Theatre and other London theatres.
I know Great Britain is by the right considered The state of the future and I would like to go to London and see the most beautiful sights in the capital of this country. I hope my wish will come true.

As the country is surrounded by many seas there are some great ports at the seaside: London, Glasgow, Plymouth and others.
Wales is a country of lakes.

Foreigners have many ideas about what the English like. For example, some people say the English are always cold and reserved, this means that they don’t talk much to strangers, and don’t show much emotion. A reserved person never tells you anything about himself. But the people of the North and West of Britain are much less reserved than those of the South and East. Some believe the English eat porridge for breakfast and read The Times every day. Many Australians believe that the English always whine and call them “whining poms”. The Welsh, Scottish and Irish also have a thing or two to say about what they think the English are like with reference to the British Empire. And, of course, the English themselves have plenty of ideas about what they are, such as being proud of having one of the oldest parliament in the world.
English people are famous for their habit of politeness. It is considered polite to give up one’s seat to a woman who is standing, to open a door for her, carry things for her, and so on. Most British people expect the person in front of them to hold the door open for them. People think you are rude, if you don’t do this. Most British people queue when they are waiting for a bus or waiting to be served in a shop. But during the rush hour, when a bus or train arrives, people often push forward to make sure they get on. This is called jumping the queue. British people keep their old traditions and are very proud of them. They are famous for their sense of humour. English people show great love for animals. And, of course, English people are fond of sports. Many continentals think life is a game; the English think cricket is a game. To many Englishmen cricket is both a game and a standard of behaviour. When they consider something unfair, they say “That isn’t cricket”.
The traditional love of English people for tea is well known. They like to drink tea with milk. They have their five-o’clock tea not only at home or in offices, but also in tea-rooms and tea-shops, which can be found in every town.
A nation is born from its land, its history, its art, its traditions and its institutions. These things work together to make people what they are. But above all, a nation is made up of people, and although there are things they all share, all of those people are different. We can say there is still a “British nation,” and one of the most characteristic features of Englishmen is their traditions, which they respect, and which they have kept for centuries. The traditions don’t only accumulate the experience and wisdom of many generations, but they bring some stability into the rapidly changing world.

Many centuries ago the islands were inhabited by Celts. Their tribes were developing into kingdoms when Julius Caesar invaded Britain in 55 B.C. The Roman invasion began in AD 43. The Romans withdrew in 407. The tribes of Angles and Saxons crossed the Channel and overran all England except Cornwall and Wales. Christianity was introduced in the 6th century by missionaries from Rome.
The surface of the British Isles varies very much. The north of Scotland is mountainous and is called the Highlands, while the south, which has beautiful valleys and plains, is called the Lowlands. The north and the west of England are mountainous, but all the rest — east, centre and south-east — is a vast plain. The mountains are not very high. There are a lot of rivers in Great Britain, but they are not very long. The Severn is the longest river, while the Thames is the deepest and the most important one.

E ngland is the largest and the richest country of Great Britain. The capital of England is London but there are other large industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and other famous and interesting cities such as York, Chester, Oxford and Cambridge. Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric places in the world. This ancient circle of stones stands in Southwest England. It measures 80 metres across and made with massive blocks of stone up to four metres high. Why it was built is a mystery.
Not far from Stonehenge stands Salisbury Cathedral. It is a splendid example of an English Gothic Cathedral; inside there is one of four copies of Magna Charta and the oldest clock in England. Chester is very important town in the north-west of England. In the past it used to be a Roman fort; its name comes from the Latin word castra, meaning “fortified camp”. In Chester there is a famous museum which contains over 5000 ancient and modern toys.
Oxford is the home of the oldest university of England. The most famous college is Christ Church. It has a great hall which was built during the reign of Henry VIII and its chapel has become the Cathedral of Oxford. Cambridge is the home of Britain’s second oldest university. York was the capital of Northern England. It is one of the best preserved medieval cities of Europe. It was built by Romans, conquered by Anglo-Saxons and ruled by the Vikings. Birmingham is often called the “City of 1,500 trades” because of the great variety of its industries.

Firstly, we should take into consideration the full name of this country – the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the fact that it includes four magnificent countries: Scotland, Wales, England and Ireland. So Great Britain is really diverse and involves the features of its unique parts and their nationalities. Each country is charming on its own. Scotland is famous for its whiskey, kilts and amazing highlands. Ireland fascinates with its music, dances and Irish beer. England attracts people by its sights, phone boxes, red buses and such a special atmosphere.
As far as I know Great Britain is one of the biggest European countries, but it really differs from any other. First of all, it’s located on the British Isles and is separated from its neighbors by seas. This fact actually explains the main characteristics of the British — conservatism and isolation. Moreover, it’s a well-known fact that the UK has a unique polity — a constitutional monarchy which is the symbol of the country. The real power belongs to the parliament, but the monarch Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal family are of the great honor in the UK. They live in Buckingham palace in London, in the place which is famous for its guards and the great ceremony of their changing. Everyone who comes there wants to take a photo with the guard and make him move. As the nation with the Royal family, the British are known as very polite people with perfect manners.
As for me, I have never been to this country, but I dream to do it one day. I’m fascinated with British music, literature and especially the weather. I think the rainy and foggy weather covers some kind of mystery that I’d like to unravel.

The United Kingdom or The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the island state in the Western Europe.
The capital of Great Britain is London. It`s the cultural center of the country. There is an International London Heathrow Airport, a famous Tower Bridge over the river Thames, a Westminster Abbey, the National Gallery of Art and many other beautiful places to visit.
London is situated on the British islands and it is settled down on a zero meridian which is also called Greenwich.

Many famous people was born and lived in Great Britain.
William Shakespeare is one of them. He wrote many plays like “Romeo and Juliet”, “Hamlet”, “Macbeth” and others. Most of them are tragedies.
Shakespeare was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He lived in Stratford – on – Avon with his wife Anne Hathaway and his children.
The best writer of his time was as good actor as a writer. He appeared in his own plays at the Globe Theatre and other London theatres.

The UK is a constitutional monarchy. In law, Head of the State is Queen. In practice, Queen reigns, but does not rule. The country is ruled by the elected government with the Prime Minister at the head. The British Parliament consists of two chambers: the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
There are three main political parties in Great Britain: the Labour, the Conservative, and the Liberal parties.

The homeland of this language is England. And it is interesting to me to find out more about this country.
Great Britain is a state which united four amazingly beautiful countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Each of them has a right to be proud of its own centuries-old traditions, history, marvelous nature, museums and monuments, holidays and festivals.
Great Britain is a country with a great number of historical sites. In this country there are lots of famous buildings, castles with their ancient history, old bridges and museums.
A famous tower clock Big-Ben and Buckingham Palace are located here. The royal family lives In this palace.
There are also ancient mansions with family ghosts in Great Britain. No country in the world has such a big number of old mansions and fortresses, like Great Britain.
It’s a country of amazing beauty with its rich history and old traditions, as well as the homeland of many outstanding people: Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, Charles Darwin, etc. Each corner of this country is saturated with the historical past of the kingdom.
It seems magical to me, because a real queen, a princess and princes exist in it till now. Great Britain is a country which preserved ancient culture and traditions.
The British are very well brought up and educated. They differ in their politeness, restraint, accuracy and love for cleanness and order. But what impresses me most is that they are very proud of the traditions of their country and that they follow them accurately.
My dream is to visit this beautiful country, where there are lots of enigmatic and mysterious things.

Foreigners have many ideas about what the English like. For example, some people say the English are always cold and reserved, this means that they don’t talk much to strangers, and don’t show much emotion. A reserved person never tells you anything about himself. But the people of the North and West of Britain are much less reserved than those of the South and East. Some believe the English eat porridge for breakfast and read The Times every day. Many Australians believe that the English always whine and call them “whining poms”. The Welsh, Scottish and Irish also have a thing or two to say about what they think the English are like with reference to the British Empire. And, of course, the English themselves have plenty of ideas about what they are, such as being proud of having one of the oldest parliament in the world.
English people are famous for their habit of politeness. It is considered polite to give up one’s seat to a woman who is standing, to open a door for her, carry things for her, and so on. Most British people expect the person in front of them to hold the door open for them. People think you are rude, if you don’t do this. Most British people queue when they are waiting for a bus or waiting to be served in a shop. But during the rush hour, when a bus or train arrives, people often push forward to make sure they get on. This is called jumping the queue. British people keep their old traditions and are very proud of them. They are famous for their sense of humour. English people show great love for animals. And, of course, English people are fond of sports. Many continentals think life is a game; the English think cricket is a game. To many Englishmen cricket is both a game and a standard of behaviour. When they consider something unfair, they say “That isn’t cricket”.
The traditional love of English people for tea is well known. They like to drink tea with milk. They have their five-o’clock tea not only at home or in offices, but also in tea-rooms and tea-shops, which can be found in every town.
A nation is born from its land, its history, its art, its traditions and its institutions. These things work together to make people what they are. But above all, a nation is made up of people, and although there are things they all share, all of those people are different. We can say there is still a “British nation,” and one of the most characteristic features of Englishmen is their traditions, which they respect, and which they have kept for centuries. The traditions don’t only accumulate the experience and wisdom of many generations, but they bring some stability into the rapidly changing world.

Let me introduce myself. I`m Pavel Losev. I`m eleven. I have been studying English for 2 years.
I dream of visiting Great Britain some day. I know about Great Britain much. The full name of the country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It is on the British Isles. The head of the royal family is Queen Elizabeth 2. She lives in Buckingham Palace in London. It is a very beautiful building. You can see the soldiers in red uniforms and black hats here. In Great Britain people speak English.
London, the capital of the country, looks like one great beautiful park. It stands on the riverThames. There are many bridges but the most beautiful bridge is Tower Bridge.
English children like to celebrate Halloween in autumn. They wear the costumes of witches, wizards and ghosts. Trick or Treat! They are fond of “mirror pictures”. You can make it from paper, paints and paintbrushes.
In winter English people celebrate Christmas. On the 25th of December they give each other presents and send Christmas cards: “We wish you a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” Children find the presents in their stockings near the beds. Everybody can taste Christmas dinner with roast turkey and pudding. Christmas is coming! The goose is getting fat! You can hear the Queen`s speech on television and see a Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square in London.
Everybody knows the famous tradition of English tea drinking! Every evening at 5 o`clock English people gather together in their families and drink tea. Home, sweet home! They love and take care of their homes and their country.
I would like to learn English and become an interpreter, to win the contest of City & Guilds and see Buckingham Palace in London.

На иллюстрации в моем учебнике – это очень красивое здание, здесь можно увидеть и королевских гвардейцев в красных костюмах и черных шапках. В Великобритании все разговаривают на английском языке.
Столица страны, Лондон, похожа на чудесный зеленый парк. Стоит на реке Темзе. Много мостов. Среди них самый привлекательный, на мой взгляд, – Башенный мост.
Осенью английские ребята отмечают Хэллоуин, канун Дня всех святых. Они наряжаются в костюмы ведьм, чародеев и привидений. Угостите или подшутим! Ребята любят делать “зеркальные картинки”. Вы тоже можете попробовать их сделать из бумаги, красок и кисточек.
Зимой наступает Рождество. 25 декабря англичане дарят друг другу подарки и посылают рождественские открытки: ” Веселого Рождества и счастливого Нового года!” Дети находят подарки в приготовленных чулках около своих кроватей. На Рождество можно попробовать индейку и пудинг. Рождество наступает! По телевизору выступает английская королева с речью, а в центре Трафальгарской площади в Лондоне стоит праздничная ёлка.
Всем знакома традиция английского чаепития вечером в 5 часов, когда вся семья собирается дома. Нет ничего милее домашнего уюта! Англичане любят и сохраняют свой дом и свою страну.
Я мечтаю выучить английский язык и стать переводчиком, победить в конкурсе City & Guilds и увидеть Букингемский дворец в Лондоне.

So most people who look forward to summer holidays, plan to go abroad for the summer.The most unpleasant aspect of English weather is fog and smog. This is extremely bad in big cities especially in London. The fog spreads everywhere so cars move along slowly and people can’t see each other. They try not to be run over by a car but still accidents are frequent in the fog.

E ngland is the largest and the richest country of Great Britain. The capital of England is London but there are other large industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and other famous and interesting cities such as York, Chester, Oxford and Cambridge. Stonehenge is one of the most famous prehistoric places in the world. This ancient circle of stones stands in Southwest England. It measures 80 metres across and made with massive blocks of stone up to four metres high. Why it was built is a mystery.
Not far from Stonehenge stands Salisbury Cathedral. It is a splendid example of an English Gothic Cathedral; inside there is one of four copies of Magna Charta and the oldest clock in England. Chester is very important town in the north-west of England. In the past it used to be a Roman fort; its name comes from the Latin word castra, meaning “fortified camp”. In Chester there is a famous museum which contains over 5000 ancient and modern toys.
Oxford is the home of the oldest university of England. The most famous college is Christ Church. It has a great hall which was built during the reign of Henry VIII and its chapel has become the Cathedral of Oxford. Cambridge is the home of Britain’s second oldest university. York was the capital of Northern England. It is one of the best preserved medieval cities of Europe. It was built by Romans, conquered by Anglo-Saxons and ruled by the Vikings. Birmingham is often called the “City of 1,500 trades” because of the great variety of its industries.
