New Year is a special holiday in my family. This is the time when we all gather at a big table. A few days before New Year we put up our Christmas tree in the living room. We also decorate other rooms. We put Christmas figurines on the shelves and hang garlands around the house. All these things fill our house with special festive atmosphere.
My mum cooks something special for New Year’s dinner. We all help her. We like to follow the new trend and celebrate New Year wearing same colours as the colour of the animal in Chinese calendar. For example, when we celebrated the New Year of the Red Monkey, we wore red and orange. It is believed, that following this tradition will bring you lots of luck in the new year.
We usually watch different New Year programmes on TV on this day. When the clock on the Kremlin tower strikes midnight, we, according to the long-standing tradition, make our wishes and give each other compliments of the season. After that we exchange gifts with each other.
When I was little, I always looked forward to the coming of New Year. I am a lot older now but have the same feeling in my heart. For me, New Year is the night when air is filled with magic, this is the time of new hopes and aspirations, a feeling of easiness and joy. This is the time when I want to live, enjoy my life to the full and move forward!

За пару дней до Рождества мы отправляемся вместе на рынок и покупаем ёлку, а потом украшаем ее. И хотя родители говорят, что мы с сестрой уже достаточно взрослые, но для нас ёлка всегда была и будет символом Рождества.
Мне нравится гулять по магазинах в преддверии этого праздника. Знаю, что магазины постоянно переполнены, но меня привлекает именно настроение и сам момент суеты. Люди ходят туда-сюда, ищут подарки и продукты к столу, а ещё пытаются купить что-то себе.
Для меня Рождество всегда было особым праздником. Я чувствую, что магия витает в воздухе. Я никогда не верила в Санту, но каждый год я загадываю желание. Я всегда рада видеть свою семью счастливой и в полном здравии, мы ужинаем все вместе и говорим друг другу пожелания.
Я уверена, что всегда буду любить и уважать Рождество. Оно ведь мне напоминает о счастливом детстве, радостных моментах, друзьях и родных. И я постараюсь сделать все, чтобы рождество стало любимым праздником также и для моих деток.
Holidays are always a joyous occasion. I
love the variety of holidays such as birthdays of my friends and relatives and
of course my birthday. I also like May holidays when we usually go out with
friends or family, where we make barbecues, play games and just relax in the
first warm days. Halloween is also one of my favorite holidays, when my friends
and I throw a party for which we dress up in carnival costumes. But anyway, my
most favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve.
I love this holiday for the extraordinary magic atmosphere that it brings to
the city and in each house in it. This is the time when every town is
transformed and it looks like a Christmas card. When each house is filled with the
scent of pine, mandarins and delicious pastries. For everyone this period is
time, when one can take at least a little gift and everyone will be happier in
this holiday.
New Year is a time of hope and dreams. We are all waiting when the clock
strikes twelve times and we hope that our dreams will come true! In
anticipation of the holiday people look more hopeful for the future waiting
only the best next year.
In addition to this, the favorite part of this holiday is meeting of whole
family at a large table. Around our table there are always our close friends,
parents and their children. I love feeling this holiday, it fills my family
with warmth and happiness.

My Favourite Holiday
My name is Katherine, I’m fifteen years old. My favourite holiday is my birthday. On this day I get up early, but by that time my mother already cooks food for a festive table in the kitchen. In the morning my family and friends begin to give presents and congratulate me. My parents and younger brother always want me to remember this day for a long time that’s why they decorate the flat with many-coloured little balls.
On this day a lot of my friends and relations usually come to see me. When we all get together we sit down to table and begin to celebrate my birthday. Everybody has a good time dances and communicates with each other, the music plays loudly. At the end of the holiday we turn off the lights and my father brings a big cake with candles. I must blow out the candles and make a wish. After that we have tea with a cake and then we dismiss the guests.
I would like to celebrate my birthday every month because all our relations and friends can meet together on this day. I grow up every year but my birthday always remains the most unforgettable holiday of the year. [ перевод ]

How I spent my summer vacation.
My summer vacations this year were interesting and memorable. Every day was filled with events.
In June, together with classmates, we went to a camp. I liked the camp very much. We played sports games, competed in various sports, took part in various competitions. In the evenings, we went to the disco. I enjoyed discos as I like music and dancing. I made a lot of new friends and got to know my classmates better than at school.
When I returned home after the camp, together with my parents we went to the Crimea to have a rest by the sea. We stayed in a nice hotel in Feodosia. I really liked the stony beaches, blue sea, and numerous excursions. Mom and Dad allowed me to scuba dive and I saw the life of the seabed. I also visited the water park, made trips on a motor ship, and rode horses. My rest by the sea was unforgettable.
In August, I went to the country to visit my grandparents. I have many friends in the village where my grandparents live and we spent time together. We went swimming and fishing.

My favourite
holiday, or, better to say, holidays are, definitely, the New
Year and Christmas. I n Russia the New Year is celebrated twice
— on January 1, according to the Gregorian calendar, and on
January 14, according to the Julian calendar which was used in
Russia before 1918. Christmas is a traditional holiday
celebrating the birth of Jesus with both religious and secular
aspects. It is commonly observed on December, 25 by Catholics,
and on January, 7 by the Russian Orthodox Church. New Year and
Christmas are the first, and the most joyful, holidays of the
year, when people see the Old Year off and the New Year in. I
enjoy the holidays for several reasons. Firstly, they have a
special atmosphere of joy and excitement everyone looks forward
to for several months. They are holidays of renewal and magic,
exchanging presents and wishes. Most people, irrespective of
their age, stay up all night on December, 31, setting off
fireworks and making merry. Father Christmas and Snow Maiden are
the popular characters of TV programmes and school festivals
though no one except very young children believes in their
existence. The second reason I prefer this holiday to all the
rest is that it is the centre of the New Year and Christmas
season which is, in fact, a sequence of holidays. It starts on
the 25th of December and finishes on January 14, and everyone
has a chance of relaxing after a long period of hard and
stressful work.
There are many
New Year and Christmas traditions which make these holidays so
special. For Christmas people decorate their houses with
mistletoe and the Christmas tree, go to church, send Christmas
cards — and, of course, give and receive gifts.
My favourite
Christmas tradition has been receiving and giving presents since
my childhood when gifts were put into stockings for me and I
believed it was Father Christmas who brought them, unheard and
unseen while I was sleeping. I believe Christmas presents should
be special and have a touch of magic, enabling your dearest
wishes to come true. Firstly, giving gifts to all the members of
the family adds to love and affection in it and helps to forget
minor quarrels and misunderstandings. It makes you believe you
are a family no matter what happens. Secondly, it creates the
atmosphere of joy and magic. This simple and long-standing
tradition helps you to believe in miracles and renewal, and
regain optimism if you are in trouble.
I believe
Christmas is not as popular in Russia as in most Christian
countries. There are two main reasons why it is not. The first
one is that after the Revolution of 1917 Christmas celebrations
were banned in the Soviet Union for the next seventy-five years,
and a century-old tradition was destroyed. It is being restored
now, but it will take some time to do it. The second one is that
in Russia there is a long-standing tradition of celebrating the
New Year whose traditions are very similar to those of
Christmas. The only difference is that Christmas is a Christian
holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ, and Christianity is
not as wide-spread in Russia now as it used to be before the
Revolution. Translate the

New Year is the most long-awaited (долгожданный) holiday. Many people associate it with magic and gifts. Many great holidays and anniversaries are celebrated in our country. On the 1st of May there is May Day — the holiday of spring and labour. On the 8th of March there is Women’s Day — the holiday of all women and girls. We celebrate Day of Independence of Russia on the 12th June and Day of Russian Constitution on the 12th of December. Now people celebrate some religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
But my favourite holiday is New Year’s Day, of course. It is a really wonderful holiday. People get ready for this holiday long before it. They buy New Year trees and decorate them. Every year a fairy-tale comes to every house and every family on New Year’s Eve. Children and even grown-ups wait for this day because they believe that all their wishes and desires come true and different wonderful miracles happen on that day.
On New Year’ s Eve people get together to see “the old year out and the new year in”. They eat tasty food, drink champagne, dance and have a good time together. They wish each other happiness and good luck in the new year and put the presents under the New Year tree. Children like this holiday very much. They wait for New Year presents, which, they believe, Father Frost bring to them. Everybody is merry on that day and wishes the next year to be good and happy and all one’s troubles and disappointments to remain in the past.
My holiday feast will make your mouth water and your spirit raise. My holiday feast happens in the month of December. If you haven’t guessed my favorite holiday is Christmas. It is the best holiday because it is the only one where you get presents and get an amazing feast made for you.
My Christmas day starts off when we wake up and go to my grandmother’s. By the time we get there my whole family is there. When you walk in you smell the sweet aroma of voluptuous food and my grandmother’s favorite apple cinnamon candles. My friend Eric has described the smell as “pure goodness. After we have greeted everyone in the family, and the men have looked over what is being cooked. We go into the living room and turn on whatever sporting event is on. While the women of the family are fixing the meal, you can hear all of the men sitting, talking about sports statistics and whatever else is going on in their lives and the world.
Once it is time to eat we gather in the kitchen to say the prayer. My dad says the prayer and usually gives a good message that touches all of our lives. My dad then says “let’s eat, ? and all of the men rush to see what the women have prepared. I walk over by the oven and on top of it I see cream corn, mashed potatoes, carrots in brown sugar, buttery biscuits, and green beans. I could smell the steam coming off of the carrots, the aroma of the brown sugar was music to my soul. The feast line then moved to the meat section of food. My grandmother had cooked a deliciously prepared turkey. My aunts had fixed ham, and turkey and dressing. With my dads barbecue chicken was more than my eyes could handle. My eyes were bulging out of their sockets by the time I had my plate made.
My cousin and I went outside to eat. We could hear the rest of the family talking and laughing every once in a while. I then began feasting.

New Year is a special holiday in my family. This is the time when we all gather at a big table. A few days before New Year we put up our Christmas tree in the living room. We also decorate other rooms. We put Christmas figurines on the shelves and hang garlands around the house. All these things fill our house with special festive atmosphere.
My mum cooks something special for New Year’s dinner. We all help her. We like to follow the new trend and celebrate New Year wearing same colours as the colour of the animal in Chinese calendar. Holidays are always a joyous occasion. I
love the variety of holidays such as birthdays of my friends and relatives and
of course my birthday. I also like May holidays when we usually go out with
friends or family, where we make barbecues, play games and just relax in the
first warm days. Halloween is also one of my favorite holidays, when my friends
and I throw a party for which we dress up in carnival costumes. But anyway, my
most favorite holiday is New Year’s Eve.
I love this holiday for the extraordinary magic atmosphere that it brings to
the city and in each house in it. This is the time when every town is

Я бы хотела праздновать свой день рождения каждый месяц, потому что все наши родные и друзья в этот день могут вместе встречаться. С каждым годом я взрослею, но мой день рождения остаётся всегда самым незабываемым праздником в году.
Недавно мой сын-пятиклассник обратился ко мне с вопросом о том, как написать рассказ на английском языке о любимом празднике. Мы с ним решили написать сочинение на английском языке про День Рождения. Вот что у нас вышло:

How I spent my summer vacation.
My summer vacations this year were interesting and memorable. Every day was filled with events.
In June, together with classmates, we went to a camp. I liked the camp very much. We played sports games, competed in various sports, took part in various competitions. In the evenings, we went to the disco. I enjoyed discos as I like music and dancing. I made a lot of new friends and got to know my classmates better than at school.
When I returned home after the camp, together with my parents we went to the Crimea to have a rest by the sea. We stayed in a nice hotel in Feodosia. I really liked the stony beaches, blue sea, and numerous excursions. Mom and Dad allowed me to scuba dive and I saw the life of the seabed. I also visited the water park, made trips on a motor ship, and rode horses. My rest by the sea was unforgettable.
In August, I went to the country to visit my grandparents. I have many friends in the village where my grandparents live and we spent time together. We went swimming and fishing.
My summer holidays fly surprisingly fast. Now the school year has just begun, but I’m already waiting for new vacations, new impressions and new friends.

Summer is the most wonderful time for me. I always look forward to summer holidays. Summer is the most beautiful time of the year. The three summer months give us a lot of new impressions.

We also went to the zoo, which left a lot of good impressions. At the entrance, we were offered to buy different treats for the zoo pets. I liked to feed birds and animals from my hands. It was funny to observe the monkeys, toucans, raccoons, and ostriches.
In August, I stayed with my grandmother. I liked it because my grandmother allows me absolutely everything. I read books, went rollerblading and cycling. The last summer days I spent preparing for the first of September.
Summer has ended, but I will never forget my summer holidays. My holidays were excellent.

What is your
favourite holiday? Why?
My favourite
holiday, or, better to say, holidays are, definitely, the New
Year and Christmas. I n Russia the New Year is celebrated twice
— on January 1, according to the Gregorian calendar, and on
January 14, according to the Julian calendar which was used in
Russia before 1918. Christmas is a traditional holiday
celebrating the birth of Jesus with both religious and secular
aspects. It is commonly observed on December, 25 by Catholics,
and on January, 7 by the Russian Orthodox Church. New Year and
Christmas are the first, and the most joyful, holidays of the
year, when people see the Old Year off and the New Year in. I
enjoy the holidays for several reasons. Firstly, they have a
special atmosphere of joy and excitement everyone looks forward
to for several months. They are holidays of renewal and magic,
exchanging presents and wishes. Most people, irrespective of
their age, stay up all night on December, 31, setting off
fireworks and making merry. Father Christmas and Snow Maiden are
the popular characters of TV programmes and school festivals
though no one except very young children believes in their
existence. The second reason I prefer this holiday to all the
rest is that it is the centre of the New Year and Christmas
season which is, in fact, a sequence of holidays. It starts on
the 25th of December and finishes on January 14, and everyone
has a chance of relaxing after a long period of hard and
stressful work.
There are many
New Year and Christmas traditions which make these holidays so
special. For Christmas people decorate their houses with
mistletoe and the Christmas tree, go to church, send Christmas
cards — and, of course, give and receive gifts.
My favourite
Christmas tradition has been receiving and giving presents since
my childhood when gifts were put into stockings for me and I
believed it was Father Christmas who brought them, unheard and
unseen while I was sleeping. I believe Christmas presents should
be special and have a touch of magic, enabling your dearest
wishes to come true. Firstly, giving gifts to all the members of
the family adds to love and affection in it and helps to forget
minor quarrels and misunderstandings. It makes you believe you
are a family no matter what happens. Secondly, it creates the
atmosphere of joy and magic. This simple and long-standing
tradition helps you to believe in miracles and renewal, and
regain optimism if you are in trouble.
I believe
Christmas is not as popular in Russia as in most Christian
countries. There are two main reasons why it is not. The first
one is that after the Revolution of 1917 Christmas celebrations
were banned in the Soviet Union for the next seventy-five years,
and a century-old tradition was destroyed. It is being restored
now, but it will take some time to do it. The second one is that
in Russia there is a long-standing tradition of celebrating the
New Year whose traditions are very similar to those of
Christmas. The only difference is that Christmas is a Christian
holiday marking the birth of Jesus Christ, and Christianity is
not as wide-spread in Russia now as it used to be before the
Revolution.

New Year is the most long-awaited (долгожданный) holiday. Many people associate it with magic and gifts. First of all it is surrounded by the wonderful smell of tangerines and Christmas trees, which helps to create a festive mood (праздничное настроение). Many great holidays and anniversaries are celebrated in our country. On the 1st of May there is May Day — the holiday of spring and labour. On the 8th of March there is Women’s Day — the holiday of all women and girls. We celebrate Day of Independence of Russia on the 12th June and Day of Russian Constitution on the 12th of December. Now people celebrate some religious holidays such as Christmas and Easter.
But my favourite holiday is New Year’s Day, of course. It is a really wonderful holiday. People get ready for this holiday long before it. They buy New Year trees and decorate them. Every year a fairy-tale comes to every house and every family on New Year’s Eve. Children and even grown-ups wait for this day because they believe that all their wishes and desires come true and different wonderful miracles happen on that day.
On New Year’ s Eve people get together to see “the old year out and the new year in”. They eat tasty food, drink champagne, dance and have a good time together. They wish each other happiness and good luck in the new year and put the presents under the New Year tree. Children like this holiday very much. They wait for New Year presents, which, they believe, Father Frost bring to them. Everybody is merry on that day and wishes the next year to be good and happy and all one’s troubles and disappointments to remain in the past.
My holiday feast will make your mouth water and your spirit raise. My holiday feast happens in the month of December. If you haven’t guessed my favorite holiday is Christmas. It is the best holiday because it is the only one where you get presents and get an amazing feast made for you.
My Christmas day starts off when we wake up and go to my grandmother’s. By the time we get there my whole family is there. When you walk in you smell the sweet aroma of voluptuous food and my grandmother’s favorite apple cinnamon candles. My friend Eric has described the smell as “pure goodness. After we have greeted everyone in the family, and the men have looked over what is being cooked. We go into the living room and turn on whatever sporting event is on. While the women of the family are fixing the meal, you can hear all of the men sitting, talking about sports statistics and whatever else is going on in their lives and the world.
Once it is time to eat we gather in the kitchen to say the prayer. My dad says the prayer and usually gives a good message that touches all of our lives. My dad then says “let’s eat, ? and all of the men rush to see what the women have prepared. I walk over by the oven and on top of it I see cream corn, mashed potatoes, carrots in brown sugar, buttery biscuits, and green beans. I could smell the steam coming off of the carrots, the aroma of the brown sugar was music to my soul. The feast line then moved to the meat section of food. My grandmother had cooked a deliciously prepared turkey. My aunts had fixed ham, and turkey and dressing. With my dads barbecue chicken was more than my eyes could handle. My eyes were bulging out of their sockets by the time I had my plate made.
My cousin and I went outside to eat. We could hear the rest of the family talking and laughing every once in a while. I then began feasting.
