Every national culture has its own customs and superstitious beliefs. Superstitious beliefs are the events or occurrences which forebode something. Various superstitious beliefs developed in the millennia and passed from one generation to another. Our ancestors were very observant and attentive; they noticed the dependence of events and the nature behavior and on the basis of that they made suppositions. At the present moment there is large number of various superstitious beliefs: about nature, crops, houses and things, etc. Since the childhood we hear from grandmothers and grandfathers: if spilled salt, throw it through the left shoulder, if the black cat has crossed the road, then you won’t have luck, etc. And even now, when science reached greater heights superstitious beliefs occupy a significant place in our life. But it is a private business of everybody to believe in superstitions or not, some people think that it is nonsense, before they face superstition excursion then their opinion changes fundamentally.
As for me, I believe in superstitions. From my point of view, superstitious beliefs are the people’s wisdom, but our ancestors were very close to nature and their knowledge which came through time can be useful. It seems to me that superstitious beliefs won’t disappear from our life, and even our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will sit down for a moment before they hit the road or to look into the mirror when they come back for something. В каждой национальной культуре есть свои обычаи и приметы. Приметы – это явления либо случаи, которые предвещают что-либо. Различные приметы складывались тысячелетиями и передавались из поколения в поколение. Наши предки были очень наблюдательными и внимательными, они замечали зависимость событий и поведение природы, на основе чего строили предположения. На данный момент существует большое количество различных примет: о погоде, об урожае, о жилье или вещах и др. С самого детства мы слышим от бабушек и дедушек: если просыпал соль, брось ее через левое плечо, если черная кошка перешла дорогу, то тебе не повезет и т.д. И даже сейчас, когда наука достигла больших высот, приметы занимают значительную часть нашей жизни. Но верить в приметы или нет – это личное дело каждого, некоторые люди считают, что это ерунда пока не столкнутся с исполнением приметы, тогда их мнение в корни меняется.
Что касается меня, я верю в приметы. По моему мнению, приметы – это мудрость народа, а наши предки были очень близки к природе и их знания прошедшие сквозь время могут быть полезны. Мне кажется, что приметы не исчезнут из нашей жизни, и даже наши внуки и правнуки будут садиться на дорожку или смотреть в зеркало, когда придется вернуться за чем-то домой.
Бракосочетание
Есть суеверия, связанные с бракосочетанием. Жених и невеста не должны видеться в день свадьбы, кроме как у алтаря. Невеста должна быть одета во «что-то заимствованное, что-то голубое, что-то старое и что-то новое» для удачи. Невеста ни при каких обстоятельствах не должна надевать свадебное платье раньше дня свадьбы.
Животные и суеверия
Животные играют важную роль в британских суевериях. Считается, что если ребенок прокатится на спине медведя, он не заболеет кашлем. Плохо, если вы видите летающих мышей и слышите их крики, так как в средневековье верили, что ведьмы были тесно с ними связаны. Воробей, залетевший в дом – предзнаменование смерти одного из живущих там людей. Полагают, что черные кролики владеют человеческими душами. С другой стороны, если вы будете произносить «белый кролик» в первый день каждого месяца, это принесет вам удачу.

A sign of good luck
As in any other country, there are lots of different superstitions in Britain. It’s a sign of good luck to meet a black cat. They are featured on greeting and birthday cards in England as well as horseshoes. They are usually hung over the door to bring good luck. But they need to be the right way up. The luck runs out of a horseshoe if it is upside down. People touch or knock on wood to make something come true. Putting money in the pocket of new clothes also brings good luck.
Signs of bad luck
Walking underneath a ladder, breaking a mirror, spilling salt, putting new shoes on the table, passing someone on the stairs are all signs of bad luck in Britain. The number thirteen is unlucky. Friday the thirteenth is a very unlucky day. Friday is because Jesus was crucified on this day of the week.
Table superstitions
There are some table superstitions. If you drop a knife, expect a male visitor, if it’s a fork – a female one. A white tablecloth left on a table over night is a sign of a death.
Wedding superstitions
There are superstitions connected with wedding. Bride and groom must not meet on the day of the wedding except at the altar. The bride should wear “something borrowed something blue, something old and something new” for good luck. Under no circumstances should the bride wear her wedding clothes before the day.
Animals and superstitions
Animals play a great role in Britain’s superstitions. It is thought that if a child rides on a bear’s back it will be protected from whooping-cough. It’s bad luck if you see bats flying and hear their cries as in the middle ages it was believed that witches were closely associated with them. A sparrow that flew into the house is an omen of death to one of the people who live there. Black rabbits are considered to host the souls of human beings. On the other hand, it is believed that saying “White Rabbit” on the first day of each month brings good luck.
I always look forward to my summer holidays. In my opinion, there’s nothing like the Russian countryside. We’ve got a small country house in a very picturesque place not far from Zagorsk. There’s a river and a lake there. My friends and I often go swimming and boating there. I’m also fond of lying in the sun.
There’s a lot of fish in the lake, so I sometimes go fishing. I like to sit in silence for a while waiting for a fish to get caught and listening to the birds singing in the trees. When I happen to catch a fish I set it free at once, because I do fishing just for pleasure.
When it’s very hot I usually go to the forest. The air is cool there. I like to walk in the shade of the trees and pick mushrooms and berries. I’ve got a dog called Jack. He becomes so happy when I take him with me to the forest.
Jack likes to run after butterflies or dragonflies. I sometimes play with him. I throw a stick and he brings it back to me.
But last summer my parents decided to go to some other place for a change. They made up their minds to go to the Crimea. I think it was the greatest mistake they had ever made. This, in a nutshell, is what happened.
To begin with, it was very difficult to find a place to stay. We rented a room in a house a long way from the sea. It was the only place we managed to get. It took us about half an hour to get to the beach. But it didn’t matter, as it turned out a few days later. Suddenly our happy sunny days were over. It started to rain. It occasionally cleared up for a while but then the rain went on again. All we could do was to spend all our time in the cinema or in a cafe. It was impossible to leave because we had made reservations beforehand and we had to spend another week there. I had never seen so many films in my life. By the end of the week I got very tired of the cinema and I could only lie on the bed reading books or staring at the ceiling.
At last the happy day of our departure came. You can’t imagine how astonished we were. The sun began to shine early in the morning. It seemed to me that it was laughing at us.
After that holiday we decided to spend every summer in the country.
