USA. It is faraway country, on the other side of the world. It is country of contrasts and great opportunities. There are a number of time zones and two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic, between us. And what attracts me to it?
The US is state with rich cultural heritage and fascinating history. It has passed a long way of formation and has earned respect from other countries. During the Second World War the US had been a reliable support for the Soviet Union because it had helped much in the fight against the fascism.
America gave the world a lot of great people, such as Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King. This list is endless. We should not forget about Christopher Columbus, because he had discovered this previously unknown continent.
A lot of cultures, mentalities and nations are intertwined in America. This has formed the current face of the country. Today, the US is a prosperous country, “the first economy of the world”. Many people want to go to the US to get an education, make a career, or just see this truly amazing place.
There are so many beautiful cities in America: big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami as well as little provincial towns. I want to pick out New York City among big cities. I associate New York with lots of yellow taxis on Times Square, crowds of people, who hurry somewhere and of course with skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty. Recently, I wanted to “taste “The Big Apple””. No matter how stupidly it sounds, this ambition appeared, when I was playing video game `Grand theft Auto IV`.
That would be so nice to wake up in the morning and go for a walk on Manhattan, visit the famous Wall Street, see Columbia University, stroll along Broadway, stare at the colorful advertising signs in Times Square. Then, we can go to Central Park for a walk, encountering running people in tracksuits, mummies with prams, people walking their dogs or to sit on green grass. After this we can pop to coffee shop and then go to Liberty Island where a statue with the same name is located, which has become a national symbol of America.
New York is the capital of American fashion. Fashion Weeks are held there. New York City is not only a big beautiful city, but it is one of the world economic centers. Also there is the headquarters of UN.
California will certainly leave nobody indifferent. San Francisco with Cable Cars and Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and high technologies, San Diego and its Zoo – that`s California.
There are most picturesque beaches of the West coast. I would be glad to be on of these beaches. Lying on golden sand and the sun gently caressing your skin, ocean softly roaring, boys and girls in swimsuits playing beach volleyball and the rescuers attentively watching over what is happening. California is an excellent place for surfing. I would take a lesson from local surfing instructors.
There is also Hollywood in the Golden State, it is the well-known suburbs of Los Angeles. Hollywood had discovered the world-famous stars like Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. It is noteworthy, that the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is actor too. By the way, I want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It is interesting, that there are two towns, which name is Washington, in America except the capital of the US. The capital of the US, Washington D.C., deserves attention too. What can I say about this city? The government of the USA is situated there and a number of government buildings, like United States Capitol, residence of president of the United States, the White House, and Supreme Court of the United States. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities of America. Architecture of US Capitol and Supreme Court of the US is amazing. In the US capital we can also see The Lincoln Memorial, inside which the statue of sixteenth president is located. You must see this.
United States of America is a truly great country, with special lifestyle, unique people and its own traditions. My cherished dream is to go there and learn how America really is.

Нью-Йорк ассоциируется у меня с множеством жёлтых такси на Таймс-Сквер, толпами людей спешащих куда-то, ну и, конечно же, небоскрёбами и Статуей Свободы. Совсем недавно я загорелся желанием “попробовать “Большое яблоко” на вкус”. Как бы это глупо ни звучало, но это желание появилось у меня после того как я поиграл в игру Grand Theft Auto IV.
Как было бы здорово проснуться утром и пойти гулять по Манхэттену, посетить знаменитую Уолл-стрит, посмотреть на Колумбийский университет, прогуляться по Бродвею, полюбоваться на цветастые вывески на Таймс-Сквер. Пройтись по Центральному парку, встречая на своём пути пробегающих мимо людей в спортивных костюмах, мамочек с колясками, людей, выгуливающих собак, или посидеть на зелёной травке. После можно забежать в кофейню, а затем отправиться на остров свободы, на котором находится одноимённая статуя, ставшая национальным символом Америки.
Нью-Йорк также является американской столицей моды. Там проводятся Недели Моды. Следует сказать о том, что Нью-Йорк – это не просто большой красивый город, а ещё и один из экономических центров мира. Также здесь расположена штаб-квартира ООН.
Калифорния наверняка не оставит никого равнодушным. Сан-Франциско со своими трамвайчиками и мостом “Золотые ворота”, Силиконовая долина с высокими технологиями, Сан-Диего со своим зоопарком – всё это Калифорния.
Именно там находятся самые живописные пляжи Западного побережья. Я был бы очень рад оказаться на одном из них. Лежишь на золотистом песке, а солнце нежно ласкает твою кожу, океан тихо шумит, парни и девушки в купальных костюмах играют в пляжный волейбол, спасатели на своих вышках внимательно следят за происходящим. Калифорния – превосходное место для занятий сёрфингом. Надо бы взять пару уроков у местных инструкторов.
Также в “Золотом штате” находится Голливуд, знаменитый район Лос-Анджелеса. Именно Голливуд открыл миру всемирно известных звёзд, среди которых можно выделить Одри Хепбёрн, Кирк Дуглас, Харрисон Форд, Мэрил Стрип. Примечательно, что губернатор Калифорнии, Арнольд Шварценеггер, тоже актёр. Кстати, обязательно надо посетить “Аллею славы”.
Очень интересен тот факт, что помимо столицы в Америке есть ещё два города с названием Вашингтон. Столица США, Вашингтон, тоже заслуживает внимания. Что же можно сказать о политическом центре страны? Там сосредоточено правительство и ряд правительственных зданий, таких, как Капитолий, резиденция президента США – Белый дом, Верховный суд США. Вашингтон – это один из красивейших городов Америки. Архитектура Капитолия и Верховного суда поражает воображение. Также в столице США можно увидеть мемориал Линкольна, в помещении которого находится статуя шестнадцатого президента. Это нужно видеть вживую.
Соединённые Штаты Америки поистине великая страна, с особым укладом жизни, с уникальными людьми и своими традициями. Моя заветная мечта – побывать там и узнать о том, какая она, настоящая Америка.

American way of life
The United States of America is always heard. This country is full of contradictions, but tourists who have visited it, come back contented and fascinated by it. Americans are a sociable and hospitable people, and to understand their way of life, you need to spend some time in their midst, to live among them. Americans are simple in communication, friendly to guests and strangers. They easily lead friends who are sincere in communication, but at the same time they live in houses fenced with a fence or lawn, and never are interested in the affairs of neighbors. They never discuss politics, religion and income in casual conversations.
Most Americans live in the affairs and concerns of their families and homes. They keep their homes and lawns clean, and love to do any homework on their own. Once a week they visit the supermarket and make large supplies of products. They do not like cash, they prefer credit cards. Americans are victims of advertising, and despite of the level of income, they always buy everything at a discount.
The exemplary American family gathers once a week for dinner to learn the weekly events and news. They rarely prepare food at home, like to eat in restaurants, cafes, pizzerias. In this regard the most of the population is suffering from obesity.
Teenagers moonlight on different jobs: washing machines, cutting lawns, working as waiters. At 16 years old they get a driver’s license and have their own car.
Almost all Americans are involved in public joint activities: attending various courses, playing tennis and golf, clubs, charity, church meetings once a week. Americans are sure that the person himself is building his own destiny, so from a small age, special emphasis is placed on upbringing and education. That was the most profitable commercial deal in the US history. Today Manhattan is the heart of business and commercial life of the country. New York is the city of skyscrapers. The highest of them is the 102–storeyed building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway, there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.
Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.
Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest after New York.
Los Angeles, in California, is the centre of modern industries. Not far from Los Angeles there is Hollywood, the centre of the US film industry.

The United States is a land of rivers and lakes. The northern state of Minnesota is known as the land of 10 000 lakes. The largest and deepest lakes in USA are the five Great Lakes on the border with Canada. America’s largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The Mississippi is the world’s third longest river after the Nile and the Amazon.
The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast.
The history of this land is long. In prehistoric times hunters crossed from Siberia to Alaska by land.
Gradually they moved southwards and settled all over North and South America. Each tribe developed its own language and customs.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean. Instead of reaching India as he had expected he landed on an island off a continent unknown to Europeans. Thinking that he was in India, Columbus called the people he met there Indians.
Other explorers arrived from Europe. Spanish troops conquered vast parts of Central and South America which are now called Latin America. The French founded settlements in the north. In 1620 the first English party left England for America. They were Puritans, religious people, driven out of the official Church.
The newcomers settled at Plymouth Bay. Some of them died of cold and hunger during the first winter in America. The Indians showed the white settlers how to fish and plant crops. Some settlers traded with the local population and some regarded them as enemies.
In 1783 independence from Britain was gained by 13 North American colonies. They formed the United States of America. In 1789 George Washington was elected the first president of the USA. New states joined the Union and the country grew westwards. Gold and silver were discovered on the Pacific coast and thousands of people rushed there across the continent. New towns sprang up and quickly grew. In the southern states white farmers used black slaves to work on their huge plantations. When slavery was abolished in the North the southern states left the Union and formed the Confederacy. Civil war between the North and South broke out. In 1S65 the Union won and slavery was abolished all over the USA.
Nowadays, the USA is a highly developed industrial country. It is the world’s leading producer of copper and oil and the world’s second producer of iron ore and coal. Among the most important manufacturing industries are aircraft, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, armaments, furniture and paper.
American farmers plant spring wheat in the western plains. They raise corn, wheat and beef cattle in the Midwest. Florida and California are famous for their vegetables and fruit production, and the northwestern states are known for apples, pears, berries and vegetables.
There are many important cities in the USA, for example New York, one of the largest cities in the world, a great seaport and financial centre, Chicago near the Great Lakes, one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA, and the second largest after New York. Boston is one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. Now it is a big cultural centre with three universities. Los Angeles in California is a centre of modern industries and show business. Other big cities in the USA are Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Washington, Detroit etc.
The USA as an independent state was set up by the Constitution in 1787. Under the Constitution the federal government is divided into three branches. The legislative branch is exercised by the Congress. The Congress consists of two houses: the Senate and the House of Representatives. There are 100 senators and 435 members in the House of Representatives. The executive branch is .leaded by the President chosen in nation-wide elections every four years together with the Vice-President. The judicial branch is made up of Federal District Courts, 11 Federal Courts and the Supreme Court. Federal judges are appointed by the President for life. are 5 boroughs in New York – Manhaptan , Brooklyn , Queens , the
bronx , and Staten Island. Brooklyn alone has so many people that if
it were a separate city , it would be the fourth largest in the

Geography.
Manhattan
is an island just 13 miles long and 2 miles wide . It is the centre
of American finance, advertising , art theatre, publishing , fashion
– and much more. The borough of Manhatten is what most people think
of New York, one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Manhattan
is divided into the East Side and the West Side. The dividing line is
Fifth Avenue. So, for example , East 47th Street begins at Fifth
Avenue, as does West 47th Street.
Manhattan
is also divided , wuth less exactnes, into Lower (Downtown), Midtown
and Upper (Up-town) Manhattan. As you go North, or uptown, the street
numbers get higher. Lower Manhatta refers to street numbers below
14th Street and Central Park, and Upper Manhattan to the renaming,
northern, part of the island. The
Financial District .
The
Dutch were the first Europeans to settle Manhattan. To protect
themselves from attacs, they built a sturdy wooden wall. Although
it`s now long gone, this wall gave it`s name to a street in Lower
Manhattan and the street, in turn, became synonymous with American
capitalism. The street, of course, is Wall Street. The New York Stock
Exchange and the American Stokc Exchange are both in the Wall Street
area. So are many stokc brokers, investment blanks and others bank,
and headquarters of many large corporations.
To
escape the commotion of Wall Street you can visit the nearby South
Street Seaport, an open area of low buildings on the East River. In
addition to many shops and restaraunts, the seaport has a museum.
Two
good ways to get the larger picture of New York are to circle it in a
bout and to hover over it in helicopter. In the financial district,
thogh, there`s anouther way to see New York. The twin towers of the
World Trade Centre rise 1,350 feet above the city. There`s an
observation deck on the 107th floor of one of the towers.
Appropriately,
the very first business deal in Manhattan was made in what became
the financial district. As every American schoolchild knows, the
Dutch bought Manhattan from the Indians, for the rediculously low
price of 24 dollars worth of beads and trinkets. There is, however,
another, less known side of this: evidently, the Indians who had sold
Manhattan did not themselves live there or in any sense own it. The
Dutch and the Indians alike walked away pleased. The
Lower East Side.
The
lower East Side was originali an ellegant neighborhood. When New York
was the capital of the United States, Presedent George Washington
lived on the Lower East Side.
By
the mid-1880s the Lower East Side had changed greatly. It was
chracterized by crime and the poverty and hopes of it`s residents. By
the mid-1800s the Lower East Side had become an area in which
immigrants settled. First there were many Irish, then came many Jews
from Easten Europe.
Near the Lower East Side there are
two other neighborhoods that also attracted immigrants and that are
famous for their food.The Italian restaraurants of Little
Italy remain
popular to tourists and Italians alike. Today Chinatown
is the only immigrant community that`s still growing. Chinatown has
seven newspaper of it`s own. It also nearly 200 restaurants. Greenwich
Village and the East Village.
Greenwich Village and the East Village have always been
at the centre of New york`s excitement. Both have been places for
people with different and creative ideas. Both have an active
nightlife with plenty of bars, restaraurants and clubs.
In
the early 1900s the charm Greenwich Village attracted bohemians –
writers and artists. By the 1920s, the streets of the Village were
filled with other peole, curious to see how these odd Villagers
lived. The artists and writers began moving out, some to the East
Village. Today, the Village has many elemets : students attending New
York University ; an active jazz scene; and in Washington Square –
it`s centre – street performers, police. Drug dealers, joggers,
roller skates, and just about everyone else.
When
bohemiams moved to the East Village 1920s, they found an area similar
to the Lower East Side. There were many immigrants, much dirt and
grime. The East Village has changed very little. Over the years it
has been a centre for many movements – for the beat poets of the
1950s, the hippies of the 1960s, and, more recently, for New York`s

USA. It is faraway country, on the other side of the world. It is country of contrasts and great opportunities. There are a number of time zones and two oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic, between us. And what attracts me to it?
The US is state with rich cultural heritage and fascinating history. It has passed a long way of formation and has earned respect from other countries. During the Second World War the US had been a reliable support for the Soviet Union because it had helped much in the fight against the fascism.
America gave the world a lot of great people, such as Abraham Lincoln, James Fenimore Cooper, Ernest Hemingway and Martin Luther King. This list is endless. We should not forget about Christopher Columbus, because he had discovered this previously unknown continent.
A lot of cultures, mentalities and nations are intertwined in America. This has formed the current face of the country. Today, the US is a prosperous country, “the first economy of the world”. Many people want to go to the US to get an education, make a career, or just see this truly amazing place.
There are so many beautiful cities in America: big cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami as well as little provincial towns. I want to pick out New York City among big cities. I associate New York with lots of yellow taxis on Times Square, crowds of people, who hurry somewhere and of course with skyscrapers and Statue of Liberty. Recently, I wanted to “taste “The Big Apple””. No matter how stupidly it sounds, this ambition appeared, when I was playing video game `Grand theft Auto IV`.
That would be so nice to wake up in the morning and go for a walk on Manhattan, visit the famous Wall Street, see Columbia University, stroll along Broadway, stare at the colorful advertising signs in Times Square. Then, we can go to Central Park for a walk, encountering running people in tracksuits, mummies with prams, people walking their dogs or to sit on green grass. After this we can pop to coffee shop and then go to Liberty Island where a statue with the same name is located, which has become a national symbol of America.
New York is the capital of American fashion. Fashion Weeks are held there. New York City is not only a big beautiful city, but it is one of the world economic centers. Also there is the headquarters of UN.
California will certainly leave nobody indifferent. San Francisco with Cable Cars and Golden Gate Bridge, Silicon Valley and high technologies, San Diego and its Zoo – that`s California.
There are most picturesque beaches of the West coast. I would be glad to be on of these beaches. Lying on golden sand and the sun gently caressing your skin, ocean softly roaring, boys and girls in swimsuits playing beach volleyball and the rescuers attentively watching over what is happening. California is an excellent place for surfing. I would take a lesson from local surfing instructors.
There is also Hollywood in the Golden State, it is the well-known suburbs of Los Angeles. Hollywood had discovered the world-famous stars like Audrey Hepburn, Kirk Douglas, Harrison Ford and Meryl Streep. It is noteworthy, that the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is actor too. By the way, I want to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It is interesting, that there are two towns, which name is Washington, in America except the capital of the US. The capital of the US, Washington D.C., deserves attention too. What can I say about this city? The government of the USA is situated there and a number of government buildings, like United States Capitol, residence of president of the United States, the White House, and Supreme Court of the United States. Washington D.C. is one of the most beautiful cities of America. Architecture of US Capitol and Supreme Court of the US is amazing. In the US capital we can also see The Lincoln Memorial, inside which the statue of sixteenth president is located. You must see this.
United States of America is a truly great country, with special lifestyle, unique people and its own traditions. My cherished dream is to go there and learn how America really is.

Нью-Йорк ассоциируется у меня с множеством жёлтых такси на Таймс-Сквер, толпами людей спешащих куда-то, ну и, конечно же, небоскрёбами и Статуей Свободы. Совсем недавно я загорелся желанием “попробовать “Большое яблоко” на вкус”. Как бы это глупо ни звучало, но это желание появилось у меня после того как я поиграл в игру Grand Theft Auto IV.
Как было бы здорово проснуться утром и пойти гулять по Манхэттену, посетить знаменитую Уолл-стрит, посмотреть на Колумбийский университет, прогуляться по Бродвею, полюбоваться на цветастые вывески на Таймс-Сквер. Пройтись по Центральному парку, встречая на своём пути пробегающих мимо людей в спортивных костюмах, мамочек с колясками, людей, выгуливающих собак, или посидеть на зелёной травке. После можно забежать в кофейню, а затем отправиться на остров свободы, на котором находится одноимённая статуя, ставшая национальным символом Америки.
Нью-Йорк также является американской столицей моды. Там проводятся Недели Моды. Следует сказать о том, что Нью-Йорк – это не просто большой красивый город, а ещё и один из экономических центров мира. Также здесь расположена штаб-квартира ООН.
Калифорния наверняка не оставит никого равнодушным. Сан-Франциско со своими трамвайчиками и мостом “Золотые ворота”, Силиконовая долина с высокими технологиями, Сан-Диего со своим зоопарком – всё это Калифорния.
Именно там находятся самые живописные пляжи Западного побережья. Я был бы очень рад оказаться на одном из них. Лежишь на золотистом песке, а солнце нежно ласкает твою кожу, океан тихо шумит, парни и девушки в купальных костюмах играют в пляжный волейбол, спасатели на своих вышках внимательно следят за происходящим. Калифорния – превосходное место для занятий сёрфингом. Надо бы взять пару уроков у местных инструкторов.
Также в “Золотом штате” находится Голливуд, знаменитый район Лос-Анджелеса. Именно Голливуд открыл миру всемирно известных звёзд, среди которых можно выделить Одри Хепбёрн, Кирк Дуглас, Харрисон Форд, Мэрил Стрип. Примечательно, что губернатор Калифорнии, Арнольд Шварценеггер, тоже актёр. Кстати, обязательно надо посетить “Аллею славы”.
Очень интересен тот факт, что помимо столицы в Америке есть ещё два города с названием Вашингтон. Столица США, Вашингтон, тоже заслуживает внимания. Что же можно сказать о политическом центре страны? Там сосредоточено правительство и ряд правительственных зданий, таких, как Капитолий, резиденция президента США – Белый дом, Верховный суд США. Вашингтон – это один из красивейших городов Америки. Архитектура Капитолия и Верховного суда поражает воображение. Также в столице США можно увидеть мемориал Линкольна, в помещении которого находится статуя шестнадцатого президента. Это нужно видеть вживую.

of copper and oil and the worlds second producer of iron ore and
coal. On the industrial enterprises of the country they produce
aircrafts, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, weapon,

nearly all races and nations, including the Chinese and the
native Americans — Indians.

American way of life
The United States of America is always heard. This country is full of contradictions, but tourists who have visited it, come back contented and fascinated by it. Americans are a sociable and hospitable people, and to understand their way of life, you need to spend some time in their midst, to live among them. Americans are simple in communication, friendly to guests and strangers. They easily lead friends who are sincere in communication, but at the same time they live in houses fenced with a fence or lawn, and never are interested in the affairs of neighbors. They never discuss politics, religion and income in casual conversations.
Most Americans live in the affairs and concerns of their families and homes. They keep their homes and lawns clean, and love to do any homework on their own. Once a week they visit the supermarket and make large supplies of products. They do not like cash, they prefer credit cards. Americans are victims of advertising, and despite of the level of income, they always buy everything at a discount.
The exemplary American family gathers once a week for dinner to learn the weekly events and news. They rarely prepare food at home, like to eat in restaurants, cafes, pizzerias. In this regard the most of the population is suffering from obesity.
Teenagers moonlight on different jobs: washing machines, cutting lawns, working as waiters. At 16 years old they get a driver’s license and have their own car.
Almost all Americans are involved in public joint activities: attending various courses, playing tennis and golf, clubs, charity, church meetings once a week. Americans are sure that the person himself is building his own destiny, so from a small age, special emphasis is placed on upbringing and education. They do everything themselves, their own mind, and not for beautiful eyes. That is why they have a high standard of living.

The highest of them is the 102–storeyed building. There are many other places of interest in New York: Central Park, Times Square, Rockefeller Centre, the shopping districts and the United Nations Building. In Manhattan, at Broadway, there is Columbia University, one of the biggest universities of the USA.
Another large city of the USA is Boston, one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. It is an important port and a financial and cultural centre. It has three universities.
Chicago is one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA and the second largest after New York.
Los Angeles, in California, is the centre of modern industries. Not far from Los Angeles there is Hollywood, the centre of the US film industry.

If we look at the map of the USA, we can see lowlands and mountains. The highest mountains are the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. The highest peak is Mount McKinley which is located in Alaska. It is 6193 metres high.
The United States is a land of rivers and lakes. The northern state of Minnesota is known as the land of 10 000 lakes. The largest and deepest lakes in USA are the five Great Lakes on the border with Canada. America’s largest rivers are the Mississippi, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. The climate of the country varies greatly. The coldest regions are in the north. The climate of Alaska is arctic. The climate of the central part is continental. The south has a subtropical climate. Hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico often bring typhoons. The climate along the Pacific coast is much warmer than that of the Atlantic coast.
The history of this land is long. In prehistoric times hunters crossed from Siberia to Alaska by land.
Gradually they moved southwards and settled all over North and South America. Each tribe developed its own language and customs.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean. Instead of reaching India as he had expected he landed on an island off a continent unknown to Europeans. Thinking that he was in India, Columbus called the people he met there Indians.
Other explorers arrived from Europe. Spanish troops conquered vast parts of Central and South America which are now called Latin America. The French founded settlements in the north. In 1620 the first English party left England for America. They were Puritans, religious people, driven out of the official Church.
The newcomers settled at Plymouth Bay. Some of them died of cold and hunger during the first winter in America. The Indians showed the white settlers how to fish and plant crops. Some settlers traded with the local population and some regarded them as enemies.
In 1783 independence from Britain was gained by 13 North American colonies. They formed the United States of America. In 1789 George Washington was elected the first president of the USA. New states joined the Union and the country grew westwards. Gold and silver were discovered on the Pacific coast and thousands of people rushed there across the continent. New towns sprang up and quickly grew. In the southern states white farmers used black slaves to work on their huge plantations. When slavery was abolished in the North the southern states left the Union and formed the Confederacy. Civil war between the North and South broke out. In 1S65 the Union won and slavery was abolished all over the USA.
Nowadays, the USA is a highly developed industrial country. It is the world’s leading producer of copper and oil and the world’s second producer of iron ore and coal. Among the most important manufacturing industries are aircraft, cars, textiles, radio and television sets, armaments, furniture and paper.
American farmers plant spring wheat in the western plains. They raise corn, wheat and beef cattle in the Midwest. Florida and California are famous for their vegetables and fruit production, and the northwestern states are known for apples, pears, berries and vegetables.
There are many important cities in the USA, for example New York, one of the largest cities in the world, a great seaport and financial centre, Chicago near the Great Lakes, one of the biggest industrial cities in the USA, and the second largest after New York. Boston is one of the first cities which were built on the Atlantic coast of America. Now it is a big cultural centre with three universities. are 5 boroughs in New York – Manhaptan , Brooklyn , Queens , the
bronx , and Staten Island. Brooklyn alone has so many people that if
it were a separate city , it would be the fourth largest in the
United States.
Manhattan
Geography.
Manhattan
is an island just 13 miles long and 2 miles wide . It is the centre
of American finance, advertising , art theatre, publishing , fashion
– and much more. The borough of Manhatten is what most people think
of New York, one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Manhattan
is divided into the East Side and the West Side. The dividing line is
Fifth Avenue. So, for example , East 47th Street begins at Fifth
Avenue, as does West 47th Street.
Manhattan
is also divided , wuth less exactnes, into Lower (Downtown), Midtown
and Upper (Up-town) Manhattan. As you go North, or uptown, the street
numbers get higher. Lower Manhatta refers to street numbers below
14th Street and Central Park, and Upper Manhattan to the renaming,
northern, part of the island.
The
Financial District .
The
Dutch were the first Europeans to settle Manhattan. To protect
themselves from attacs, they built a sturdy wooden wall. Although
it`s now long gone, this wall gave it`s name to a street in Lower
Manhattan and the street, in turn, became synonymous with American
capitalism. The street, of course, is Wall Street. The New York Stock
Exchange and the American Stokc Exchange are both in the Wall Street
area. So are many stokc brokers, investment blanks and others bank,
and headquarters of many large corporations.
To
escape the commotion of Wall Street you can visit the nearby South
Street Seaport, an open area of low buildings on the East River. In
addition to many shops and restaraunts, the seaport has a museum.
Two
good ways to get the larger picture of New York are to circle it in a
bout and to hover over it in helicopter. In the financial district,
thogh, there`s anouther way to see New York. The twin towers of the
World Trade Centre rise 1,350 feet above the city. There`s an
observation deck on the 107th floor of one of the towers.
Appropriately,
the very first business deal in Manhattan was made in what became
the financial district. As every American schoolchild knows, the
Dutch bought Manhattan from the Indians, for the rediculously low
price of 24 dollars worth of beads and trinkets. There is, however,
another, less known side of this: evidently, the Indians who had sold
Manhattan did not themselves live there or in any sense own it. The
Dutch and the Indians alike walked away pleased.
The
Lower East Side.
The
lower East Side was originali an ellegant neighborhood. When New York
was the capital of the United States, Presedent George Washington
lived on the Lower East Side.
By
the mid-1880s the Lower East Side had changed greatly. It was
chracterized by crime and the poverty and hopes of it`s residents. By
the mid-1800s the Lower East Side had become an area in which
immigrants settled. First there were many Irish, then came many Jews

Near the Lower East Side there are
two other neighborhoods that also attracted immigrants and that are
famous for their food.The Italian restaraurants of Little
Italy remain
popular to tourists and Italians alike. Today Chinatown
is the only immigrant community that`s still growing. Chinatown has
seven newspaper of it`s own. It also nearly 200 restaurants.
Greenwich
Village and the East Village.
Greenwich Village and the East Village have always been
at the centre of New york`s excitement. Both have been places for
people with different and creative ideas. Both have an active
nightlife with plenty of bars, restaraurants and clubs.
In
the early 1900s the charm Greenwich Village attracted bohemians –
writers and artists. By the 1920s, the streets of the Village were
filled with other peole, curious to see how these odd Villagers
lived. The artists and writers began moving out, some to the East
Village. Today, the Village has many elemets : students attending New
York University ; an active jazz scene; and in Washington Square –
it`s centre – street performers, police. Drug dealers, joggers,
roller skates, and just about everyone else.
When
bohemiams moved to the East Village 1920s, they found an area similar
to the Lower East Side. There were many immigrants, much dirt and
grime. The East Village has changed very little. Over the years it
has been a centre for many movements – for the beat poets of the
1950s, the hippies of the 1960s, and, more recently, for New York`s
punk scene.
The United States of America
The
Unites States of America are situated in the central part of the
North American continent. Its western
coast is washed by the Pacific
Ocean and its eastern coast – by the
Atlantic Ocean. The
total area of the USA is over nine million square kilometres.
The population of the USA is more than
236 million people; most of
the population lives in towns and cities.
The USA is a very large country, so it
has several different climatic
regions.
The Goldest regions are in the north and north-east. The south
has a subtropical climate.
The United States is a land of rivers and
lakes..The northern state
of
Minnesota is the land of 10 000 lakes. The longest
rivers
in the USA are
the Mississippi, the Missouri and the Rio Grande. The highest
mountains are the Rocky Mountains, the
Cordillera and the Sierra
Nevada.
The

produces copper, oil, iron ore and coal.
It is a highly-developed

There are many big cities in the USA,
such as New York, Chicago,

in the late eighteenth century especially as the centre of

USA became the world teading country at the beginning of the
twen*eth century.
US Congress
The
United States of America is a federal republic consisting of
50 states. Each of which has its own
goverment (“state
goverment”). In some ways the United
States is like 50 small
countries. Each state has its own
governor, its own police and
its own laws. The present constitution was
proclaimed in 1787 in
Philadelphia, the President is the head of
the whole country and the
goverment and “commandering chief” of the armed forces.
He makes
the most important decisions and chooses the ministers, the
members of his cabinet. But the President
cannot do just what he wants.
The Congress must agree first. Americans choose a new
president every four years. The residence
of the President is the White
House in Washington, the Capital city. The goverment of the
whole
country (the Federal goverment) works from Washington, this
is where the Congress is based. The
Capitol is the seat of the US
Congress. Congress is the American
parliament which consists of 2
chambers. The Senate and the House of
Representatives. The first
Congress met in 1789 in New York city.
The membership then
consisted of 22 senators and 59
representatives. Today the House
of Representatives has 435 members.
Elections to the house take
place every 2 years. There are 100
senators (2 from each state),
they are elected to serve for a period of
six years, but every two
years elections to the senate took place when one/third of
its members must be changed or re-elected.
Election day is always in
the month of November, on the first Tuesday, after the first
Monday.
Americans who aren’t yet 25 years old have no right to be
elected to the House of Representatives.
Whose, who are under 30 can’t
be elected in the Senate. The main political parties in the
United States of America are the
Democratic Party and the
Republlican Party.
Washington
The
city of Washington, the capital of the United States of
America is located in the District of
Columbia (DC for short)
Many people consider Washington DC to be
one of the most beatiful
cities in the world. It is filled with
many parks, wide streets and
impressive buildings. In the centre of the city, in Capitol
Park, visitors’ eyes focus on the
Capitol, where Congress
convence to inect laws. Many visitors come
to Washington DC to see
the White House. It is the greatest attraction for many of
them. The White House, the official
residence of the President,
is situated at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,
N.W. The largest room in this
building of over the hundreds room is the East Room, scene
of
many state receptions, balls and musicals. Other famous rooms
are: the Green Room, the Blue Room, the
Red Room, which are used for
afternoon teas and for receptions held before state dinners.
The Blue Room, the most formal of these
“colors” room is an
oval-shaped room connecting the Green and
the Red Rooms. On the second
floor, the floor with the family quarters and quests
rooms, is the Lincoln Room, which one
served as an office for
president Lincoln but today serves as an
honor guest room. In this
room Lincoln signed the emansipation proclamation of 1863.
Other landmarks in Washington DC
include memorials to three
Presidents: The Washington Memorial, The
Lincoln Memorial and The
Jefferson Memorial; The Library of
Congress, The National Gallary
of Art, The John F. Kennedy center for the
Perfoming Arts. The Capitol
is in the very center of Washington. It is located on the
Capitol
Hill, the highest point in the city. The Capitol is the
highest building in Washington. There is a
law in Washington not to
build buildings higher than the Capitol. The conrer stone of
the Capitol was laid by George Washington
on Sep 18th, 1793. The
Capitol is the seat of the goverment of
the United States of
America.
The USA has its own federal holidays. Together with international holidays, like New Year and Christmas, the Americans celebrate a number of their own ones. They have got two military holidays.
