The Olympic Games in Sochi 2014.
The Olympic Games are the world’s brightest sporting event. Hundreds of athletes dream of participating in them. Those who go up the Olympic pedestal become an example for millions of spectators. Their achievements remain in the history of sport and the Olympic movement forever.
The motto of the Olympics is the slogan offered by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. It sounds like “Faster, higher, stronger”. Since the end of the 19th century every four years people all over the world stand motionless, watching the competitions of the best athletes from different continents in the White Olympic Games. And then it is decided who is “the fastest, the highest, the strongest” of all, who will receive a great honour to have a title of the Olympic champion of the Winter Olympics and possess the Olympic medal. It is known that this medal is the highest award in sport. I think it is quite fair. The best sportsmen win the Olympic Games. The victory in such competitions is always a great talent together with hard work, years of training, traumata, disappointments… It is known that first of all, each athlete wins himself – his fears, doubts, pain and laziness. Therefore, it is possible to say that the Olympic Games improve a person, help him come nearer to the ideal – to the Gods, who lived in Ancient Olympia.
The Winter Olympic Games are held every four years. The cities of the whole world fight for the right to hold the next competitions. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Russian city of Sochi. Having received the right to host the Winter Olympics some Russians have a question: “Do we need them? They are too expensive for our country!” Certainly, we have a lot of problems which we must solve. They are problems in medicine, culture, education and so on. But on the other hand, the Olympic Games are a national holiday, the event uniting all the people with a common idea. The Olympic Games last only three weeks, but the authority and respect of the country remain forever.
Like the majority of the Russians, I am very glad of the fact of holding the winter games in Sochi and I consider that it is a great honour for my country. Undoubtedly, I am going to keep an eye on the games in Sochi, to watch the competitions on TV, to root for our Russian sportsmen very actively. The English proverb says: ”Every dog is a lion at home”. That’s why I hope that thanks to the support of millions of fans our sportsmen will be able to rise to the highest step of the pedestal in each kind of winter sports.
Besides, the Olympic Games are the opportunity for Russian people to rethink their attitude to sport. I believe that the preparation for the White Olympic Games will become the beginning of a real revival of sport in our country. Sports schools, stadiums, playgrounds will be built and reconstructed, free sections will be opened for children and teenagers. Perhaps, some today’s kids, who go skating or skiing, will set a goal – to get to the White Olympics, not in 2014, of course, but some of them, without any doubt, will achieve their goals.
Any person can hope for success. He or she should only strive for it. The more people will seek for high achievements in sport, the more champions and record-breakers of the Winter Olympic Games will be! I wish great victories and personal records to all the future champions!
The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games, were a major international multi-sport event held in Sochi, Russia, in the tradition of the Winter Olympic Games. Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet Union was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
A total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines were held during the Games. A number of new competitions were held during the Games, including biathlon mixed relay, women’s ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slopestyle, and snowboard parallel slalom. The events were held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi’s Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium, and the Games’ indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.
In preparation, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally budgeted at US$12 billion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over US$51 billion, surpassing the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the most expensive Olympics in history.
With an average February temperature of 8.3°C and a humid subtropical climate, Sochi is the warmest city to host a Winter Olympic Games. It is also the first time that an Olympic Park has been built for hosting a winter games.
Sochi Olympic Park (Coastal Cluster)
The Sochi Olympic Park was built by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, about 4 km (2.5 miles) from Russia’s border with Georgia. The venues are clustered around a central water basin on which the Medals Plaza is built, allowing all indoor venues to be within walking distance. The new venues include:
Fisht Olympic Stadium – ceremonies (opening/closing) 40,000 spectators
Bolshoy Ice Dome – ice hockey (final), 12,000 spectators

The Games’ official slogan Hot. Cool. Yours. (Жаркие. Зимние. Твои.) was unveiled on September 25, 2012, to mark the 500-day milestone before the opening ceremony. Presenting the slogan, SOC president Dmitry Chernyshenko explained that it represented the “passion” of the Games’ athletes, the climate of Sochi itself, and a sense of inclusion and belonging.
Mascots
For the first time in Olympic history, a public vote was held to decide the mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The 10 finalists, along with the results, were unveiled during live specials on Channel One. On 26 February 2011, the official mascots were unveiled, consisting of a polar bear, a snow hare, and a snow leopard.
Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony took place on February 7, 2014. More than 3,000 people from artistic groups participated in dance, ballet, acrobatic and circus performances during the opening ceremony which was watched by a 40,000 strong audience at Sochi’s Fisht Olympic Stadium.

A record 88 nations qualified to compete, which beat the previous record of 82 set at the previous Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Seven nations—Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe—are making their Winter Olympics debut.

98 events over 15 disciplines in 7 sports were included in the 2014 Winter Olympics. The three skating sports disciplines are figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. There are six skiing sport disciplines—alpine, cross-country skiing, freestyle, Nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding. The two bobsleigh sports disciplines are bobsleigh and skeleton. The other four sports are biathlon, curling, ice hockey, and luge. A total of twelve new events are contested to make it the largest Winter Olympics to date. Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of medal events contested in each sports discipline.

Closing ceremony
The closing ceremony was held on 23 February 2014 between 20:14 MSK and 22:25 MSK at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi. The ceremony was dedicated to Russian culture featuring world-renowned Russian stars like conductor and violinist Yuri Bashmet, conductor Valery Gergiev, pianist Denis Matsuev, singer Hibla Gerzmava and violinist Tatiana Samouil. These artists were joined by performers from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters.
Medals
Sochi’s medal design was unveiled in May 2013. The design is intended to resemble Sochi’s landscape, with a semi-translucent section containing a “patchwork quilt” of diamonds representing mountains; the diamonds themselves contain designs that reflect Russia’s regions. Those who won gold medals on 15 February received special medals with fragments of the Chelyabinsk meteor, marking the one-year anniversary of the event where pieces of the cosmic body fell into the Chebarkul Lake in the Ural Mountains in central Russia.

Зимние Олимпийские Игры 2014 (официальное название — XXII Зимние Олимпийские Игры) — важное международное спортивное мероприятие, которое было проведено в Сочи (Россия).
Город Сочи был избран столицей Олимпиады в июле 2007 года, во время 119 сессии МОК, проходившей в Гватемале. Это первая Олимпиада в России с момента распада Советского Союза в 1991 году. В Советском Союзе Летние Олимпийские Игры были проведены в 1980 году в Москве.
Всего во время Игр было проведено 98 соревнований в 15 зимних видах спорта. Во время Игр были проведены соревнования по новым видам спорта: смешанная эстафета в биатлоне, прыжки с трамплина (женщины), командные соревнования в фигурном катании, эстафета в санном спорте, хафпайп во фристайле, слоупстайл во фристайле и сноуборде, командный параллельный слалом в сноуборде. Соревнования проходили в спортивных сооружениях, расположенных в двух кластерах: Олимпийском парке, построенном в Имеретинской долине на берегу Черного моря, в котором находится стадион Фишт и другие спортивные объекты, расположенные в шаговой доступности, и на горнолыжном курорте «Красная поляна».
При подготовке к Олимпиаде организаторы сосредоточились на модернизации сферы телекоммуникаций, электрификации и транспортной инфраструктуре региона. Первоначально бюджет планировался в размере 12 миллиардов долларов, но по разным причинам возрос до более 51 миллиарда, превысив бюджет Летней Олимпиады в Пекине, самой дорогой в истории Игр, который оценивается в 44 миллиарда долларов. Сочи — самая теплая столица Зимних Олимпийских Игр, со средней температурой в феврале 8,3°C и влажным субтропическим климатом. И впервые Олимпийский парк был построен для проведения Зимних Игр.

Олимпийский парк был построен на побережье Черного моря в Имеретинской долине, примерно в 4 км от границы России с Грузией. Спортивные объекты расположены вокруг Медальной площади, благодаря чему они находятся в шаговой близости один от другого. Эти новые спортивные объекты:

Слоган
Официальный слоган Игр «Жаркие. Зимние. Твои.» (английский вариант: «Hot. Cool. Yours.») был обнародован 25 сентября 2012 года, в день, когда до открытия Олимпиады оставалось ровно 500 дней. Представляя слоган, президент оргкомитета Олимпиады Дмитрий Чернышенко объяснил, что этот слоган несет в себе «накал страстей» спортсменов-участников Олимпиады, климат Сочи и ощущение сопричастности к этому событию каждого человека.
Талисманы
Впервые в истории Олимпиады было проведено голосование для выбора талисманов Зимней Олимпиады 2014. 10 финалистов, а также количество набранных баллов, были объявлены во время прямой трансляции на Первом канале. 26 февраля 2011 были объявлены официальные талисманы — Белый Мишка, Леопард и Зайка.
Церемония открытия
Церемония открытия прошла 7 февраля 2014 года. В представлении приняли участие более 3 тыс. человек — танцоров, артистов балета, акробатов и цирковых артистов. Церемонию смотрели 40 тыс. зрителей Олимпийского стадиона «Фишт». Олимпийский огонь зажгли фигуристка Ирина Роднина и хоккеист Владислав Третьяк.
Страны-участницы
В Олимпиаде 2014 в Сочи приняли участие рекордное количество стран — 88, что превосходит предыдущий рекорд 82, поставленный на предыдущей Зимней Олимпиаде в Ванкувере. Семь стран — Доминика, Мальта, Парагвай, Восточный Тимор, Того, Тонга и Зимбабве — участвуют в Олимпийских Играх впервые.
Виды спорта
98 соревнований по 15 зимним спортивным дисциплинам, объединённых в семь видов спорта, включены в программу зимних Олимпийских игр 2014. Три коньковых вида — фигурное катание, конькобежный спорт и шорт-трек. Шесть лыжных видов — горнолыжный спорт, лыжные гонки, фристайл, лыжное двоеборье, прыжки с трамплина и сноуборд. Два бобслейных вида — бобслей и скелетон. Четыре отдельных вида — биатлон, керлинг, хоккей и санный спорт.

Церемония закрытия была проведена 23 февраля 2014 года с 20:14 по 22:25 по московскому времени на Олимпийском стадионе «Фишт» в Сочи. Церемония была посвящена русской культуре. В ней приняли участие такие всемирно известные российские «звезды», как дирижер и альтист Юрий Башмет, дирижер Валерий Гергиев, пианист Денис Мацуев, певица Хибла Герзмава и скрипачка Татьяна Самуил. Также в представлении приняли участие артисты Большого и Мариинского театров.

Дизайн медалей Олимпиады в Сочи был обнародован в мае 2013 года. Дизайн представляет ландшафт Сочи, с полупрозрачной секцией, содержащей «лоскутное одеяло» из бриллиантов, представляющих горы. Эта вставка представляет собой мозаику из национальных узоров народов России. Те, кто выиграют золотые медали 15 февраля, получат специальные медали с фрагментами Челябинского метеорита в честь первой годовщины этого события, когда космическое тело упало в озеро Чебаркуль на Урале.

Winter Olympic Games — Sochi 2014
В 2014 году Сочи будет первым Российским городом, где будут проводиться Зимние Игры. Советский Союз (theSovietUnion) принимал в Москве Олимпийские Игры 1980 года ( hostedthe 1980 SummerGamesinMoscow). Город, где будут проводиться игры – Сочи (Thehostcity is Sochi) имеет население (hasapopulation) 400,000 человек (of 400,000 people) и находится в Краснодарском крае (issituatedinKrasnodarTerritory) – третьем по счету крупнейшем регионе в России (thethirdlargestregioninRussia).
Игры будут организованы (TheGameswillbeorganised) двумя кластерами (intwoclusters): береговой кластер (acoastalcluster) для соревнований на льду (foriceevents) и высокогорный кластер (amountaincluster), расположенный на горе Красная Поляна (theKrasnayaPolyanaMountain). Это делает Игры в Сочи самыми компактными за все время, т.к. дорога от берегового кластера до высокогорного кластера занимает всего 30 минут.
Олимпийский Парк Сочи (TheSochiOlympicPark) построен вдоль береговой линии Черного Моря (alongtheBlackSeacoast) в долине Имеретинская (intheImeretinskayaValley) и все ледяные площадки all the ice venues — Большой ледовый дворец (theBolshoiIcePalace), Малый ледовый дворец (theMalyIcePalace), Олимпийский центр Сочи по фигурному катанию (theSochiOlympicSkatingCentre), центральный стадион (theCentralStadium), Главная Олимпийская деревня (theMainOlympicVillage) и т.д. были построены заново (havebeenbuiltanew).

Sport plays an important role in people’s life. Many people do sport. Everyone chooses the kind of sport he or she likes most of all. There are many championships and sport competitions in the world. They can be local, national or world ones.

One of the most popular sport competitions is the Olympic Games. They are one of the leading sport competitions in the world. The Olympic Games are held every four year. They can be Winter Games and Summer Games, consequently, Winter Games include winter sports and Summer Games include summer sports.
Одним из самых популярных спортивных соревнований являются Олимпийские игры. Они являются одним из ведущих спортивных соревнований в мире. Олимпийские игры проводятся раз в четыре года. There was a tradition of Olympic Games in ancient Greece. They were held in Olympia. They were a part of religious and athletic festivals. The winners of the Olympic Games were admired. People composed poems in honour of them. In the 4th century B.C. the Olympic Games were forbidden.

There are many traditions connected with the Olympic Games. The symbol of the Olympic Games which is called Olympic Rings consists of five intertwined rings and represents the unity of the five inhabited continents. The opening ceremony takes place before the sport competitions start. The most important part of it is when athletes light the Olympic flame.

The Olympics have a great and long history. The Games began in 776 before Christ. After that they took place in Greece for approximately 1200 years. The former Olympic Games included various kinds of sports: wrestling, boxing, running, pentathlon (five different kinds of sports), etc.

The Olympic Games is a worldwide famous sport event. Every four years the best sportsmen of every country united in national teams meet each other in one selected city to find out who is the strongest, fastest and the sturdiest person in the world. There are two types of these games: summer and winter ones, because all sports are conditionally divided according to seasons.
The event was first organized by the ancient Greeks at the Olympus (a residence of Greek gods) more than 2,700 years ago. Modern games are very different from the first ones and quantity of played sports changes every time depending on their popularity. Summer sports usually include synchronized swimming, volleyball, rhythmic-sportive gymnastics, pole vaulting, athletics, etc. The most popular winter sports are hockey, bobsledding, figure skating, biathlon and skiing. As it was noted before, the programme is changeable: the most popular sport stays, the less popular one disappears for some time (rugby, motor sports and golf).
The winners in every competition get gold, silver and bronze medals and every sportsman desires to win the golden award. It is a big honor for every country to be a host for Olympic Games, because this is a chance to show its power, financial capabilities and the highest hospitality to guests from other countries by means of organization, opening/closing ceremonies of event and Olympic torch relay.

Для каждой страны является большой честью принимать у себя Олимпиаду, так как это шанс показать свою мощь, финансовые возможности и высокий уровень гостеприимства по отношению к гостям из других стран с помощью организации мероприятий, церемоний открытия и закрытия игры и эстафета с Олимпийским огнем.

M any people all over the world are interested in sport. Sport helps people to stay healthy and makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities.
They have always paid great attention to sport in our schools, colleges and universities. You can hardly find a school without a gym or a sportsground. Every city and town has a few stadiums or swimming pools, where local or even international competitions are usually held. Traditionally, sport could be divided into professional and amateur sport.
Former Soviet Union and later Ukrainian and Russian sportsmen have set a great number of world records in gymnastics, weightlifting, tennis, swimming, running, high jumping, etc. Our sportsmen also participate in the Olympic Games and always win gold, silver and bronze medals.
The Olympic Games have long history. They started in 776 ВС in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries at Olympia. They included many different kinds of sports. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to Olympia to compete in the Games. When the Games took place, all the wars stopped. So, the Olympic Games became the symbol of peace and friendship.
Now, there are Summer and Winter Olympic Games. They are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the Games. The International Committee of Olympic Games selects the most suitable. After that, the host city starts its preparations for the competitions, constructs new sport facilities, or reconstructs them, reconstructs stadiums, hotels, press centres, etc. Thousand of athletes, journalists and guests arrive to the Games, and it takes great efforts to arrange everything.

Lots of people in the world are fond of sport, because it’s not only healthy, but also spectacular and exciting. For these reason people have started the Olympic Games. They have appeared in 776 BC in Ancient Greece, where people every four years held festivals to please the ancient God Zeus. Later on the Games have disappeared and were revived in the present era, in 1896. The first modern Olympics took place in the capital of Greece, Athens. The old tradition to hold the Games every four years was also revived. So, from then on the Olympic Games took place every four years in different cities of the world. At certain times, such as Second World War, the games were forbidden. The Olympic Games are considered to be the biggest international sports games, which unite people from all over the world. There are two types of Olympic Games: Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. Ancient Greeks didn’t have Winter Games, so the first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in France. The official emblem of the Olympic Games is a colourful flag with five interlinked rings. The colours of the rings are blue, red, yellow, green and black, because every country in the world has at least one of these colours on their national flag. Another idea sees in each colour a certain continent, for example, blue colour symbolizes Europe, yellow- Asia, red – America, black – Africa and green – Australia. The Olympic Games have been held in many countries, and Russia is no exception. In 1980 the 22nd Olympic Games took place in Moscow, and in 2014 they took place in Sochi.

The Olympic Games are the world’s brightest sporting event. Hundreds of athletes dream of participating in them. Those who go up the Olympic pedestal become an example for millions of spectators. Their achievements remain in the history of sport and the Olympic movement forever.
The motto of the Olympics is the slogan offered by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1894. It sounds like “Faster, higher, stronger”. Since the end of the 19th century every four years people all over the world stand motionless, watching the competitions of the best athletes from different continents in the White Olympic Games. And then it is decided who is “the fastest, the highest, the strongest” of all, who will receive a great honour to have a title of the Olympic champion of the Winter Olympics and possess the Olympic medal. It is known that this medal is the highest award in sport. I think it is quite fair. The best sportsmen win the Olympic Games. The victory in such competitions is always a great talent together with hard work, years of training, traumata, disappointments… It is known that first of all, each athlete wins himself – his fears, doubts, pain and laziness. Therefore, it is possible to say that the Olympic Games improve a person, help him come nearer to the ideal – to the Gods, who lived in Ancient Olympia.
The Winter Olympic Games are held every four years. The cities of the whole world fight for the right to hold the next competitions. The 2014 Winter Olympic Games will be held in the Russian city of Sochi. Having received the right to host the Winter Olympics some Russians have a question: “Do we need them? They are too expensive for our country!” Certainly, we have a lot of problems which we must solve. They are problems in medicine, culture, education and so on. But on the other hand, the Olympic Games are a national holiday, the event uniting all the people with a common idea. The Olympic Games last only three weeks, but the authority and respect of the country remain forever.
Like the majority of the Russians, I am very glad of the fact of holding the winter games in Sochi and I consider that it is a great honour for my country. Undoubtedly, I am going to keep an eye on the games in Sochi, to watch the competitions on TV, to root for our Russian sportsmen very actively. The English proverb says: ”Every dog is a lion at home”. That’s why I hope that thanks to the support of millions of fans our sportsmen will be able to rise to the highest step of the pedestal in each kind of winter sports.
Besides, the Olympic Games are the opportunity for Russian people to rethink their attitude to sport. I believe that the preparation for the White Olympic Games will become the beginning of a real revival of sport in our country. Sports schools, stadiums, playgrounds will be built and reconstructed, free sections will be opened for children and teenagers. Perhaps, some today’s kids, who go skating or skiing, will set a goal – to get to the White Olympics, not in 2014, of course, but some of them, without any doubt, will achieve their goals.
Any person can hope for success. He or she should only strive for it. The more people will seek for high achievements in sport, the more champions and record-breakers of the Winter Olympic Games will be! I wish great victories and personal records to all the future champions!
The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXII Olympic Winter Games, were a major international multi-sport event held in Sochi, Russia, in the tradition of the Winter Olympic Games.
Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. The Soviet Union was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
A total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines were held during the Games. A number of new competitions were held during the Games, including biathlon mixed relay, women’s ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slopestyle, and snowboard parallel slalom. The events were held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi’s Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium, and the Games’ indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.
In preparation, organizers focused on modernizing the telecommunications, electric power, and transportation infrastructures of the region. While originally budgeted at US$12 billion, various factors caused the budget to expand to over US$51 billion, surpassing the estimated $44 billion cost of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing as the most expensive Olympics in history.
With an average February temperature of 8.3°C and a humid subtropical climate, Sochi is the warmest city to host a Winter Olympic Games. It is also the first time that an Olympic Park has been built for hosting a winter games.
Sochi Olympic Park (Coastal Cluster)
The Sochi Olympic Park was built by the Black Sea coast in the Imeretin Valley, about 4 km (2.5 miles) from Russia’s border with Georgia. The venues are clustered around a central water basin on which the Medals Plaza is built, allowing all indoor venues to be within walking distance. The new venues include:
Fisht Olympic Stadium – ceremonies (opening/closing) 40,000 spectators
Bolshoy Ice Dome – ice hockey (final), 12,000 spectators
Shayba Arena – ice hockey, 7,000 spectators
Adler Arena Skating Center – speed skating, 8,000 spectators

The Games’ official slogan Hot. Cool. Yours. (Жаркие. Зимние. Твои.) was unveiled on September 25, 2012, to mark the 500-day milestone before the opening ceremony. Presenting the slogan, SOC president Dmitry Chernyshenko explained that it represented the “passion” of the Games’ athletes, the climate of Sochi itself, and a sense of inclusion and belonging.
Mascots
For the first time in Olympic history, a public vote was held to decide the mascots for the 2014 Winter Olympics. The 10 finalists, along with the results, were unveiled during live specials on Channel One. On 26 February 2011, the official mascots were unveiled, consisting of a polar bear, a snow hare, and a snow leopard.
Opening ceremony
The opening ceremony took place on February 7, 2014. More than 3,000 people from artistic groups participated in dance, ballet, acrobatic and circus performances during the opening ceremony which was watched by a 40,000 strong audience at Sochi’s Fisht Olympic Stadium.

Participating National Olympic Committees
A record 88 nations qualified to compete, which beat the previous record of 82 set at the previous Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Seven nations—Dominica, Malta, Paraguay, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, and Zimbabwe—are making their Winter Olympics debut.

98 events over 15 disciplines in 7 sports were included in the 2014 Winter Olympics. The three skating sports disciplines are figure skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. There are six skiing sport disciplines—alpine, cross-country skiing, freestyle, Nordic combined, ski jumping and snowboarding. The two bobsleigh sports disciplines are bobsleigh and skeleton. The other four sports are biathlon, curling, ice hockey, and luge. A total of twelve new events are contested to make it the largest Winter Olympics to date. Numbers in parentheses indicate the number of medal events contested in each sports discipline.

Closing ceremony
The closing ceremony was held on 23 February 2014 between 20:14 MSK and 22:25 MSK at the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi. The ceremony was dedicated to Russian culture featuring world-renowned Russian stars like conductor and violinist Yuri Bashmet, conductor Valery Gergiev, pianist Denis Matsuev, singer Hibla Gerzmava and violinist Tatiana Samouil. These artists were joined by performers from the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theaters.
Medals
Sochi’s medal design was unveiled in May 2013. The design is intended to resemble Sochi’s landscape, with a semi-translucent section containing a “patchwork quilt” of diamonds representing mountains; the diamonds themselves contain designs that reflect Russia’s regions. Those who won gold medals on 15 February received special medals with fragments of the Chelyabinsk meteor, marking the one-year anniversary of the event where pieces of the cosmic body fell into the Chebarkul Lake in the Ural Mountains in central Russia.

Соревнования проходили в спортивных сооружениях, расположенных в двух кластерах: Олимпийском парке, построенном в Имеретинской долине на берегу Черного моря, в котором находится стадион Фишт и другие спортивные объекты, расположенные в шаговой доступности, и на горнолыжном курорте «Красная поляна».
При подготовке к Олимпиаде организаторы сосредоточились на модернизации сферы телекоммуникаций, электрификации и транспортной инфраструктуре региона. Официальный слоган Игр «Жаркие. Зимние. Твои.» (английский вариант: «Hot. Cool. Yours.») был обнародован 25 сентября 2012 года, в день, когда до открытия Олимпиады оставалось ровно 500 дней. Представляя слоган, президент оргкомитета Олимпиады Дмитрий Чернышенко объяснил, что этот слоган несет в себе «накал страстей» спортсменов-участников Олимпиады, климат Сочи и ощущение сопричастности к этому событию каждого человека.
Талисманы
Впервые в истории Олимпиады было проведено голосование для выбора талисманов Зимней Олимпиады 2014. 10 финалистов, а также количество набранных баллов, были объявлены во время прямой трансляции на Первом канале. 26 февраля 2011 были объявлены официальные талисманы — Белый Мишка, Леопард и Зайка.
Церемония открытия
Церемония открытия прошла 7 февраля 2014 года. В представлении приняли участие более 3 тыс. человек — танцоров, артистов балета, акробатов и цирковых артистов. Церемонию смотрели 40 тыс. зрителей Олимпийского стадиона «Фишт». Олимпийский огонь зажгли фигуристка Ирина Роднина и хоккеист Владислав Третьяк.
Страны-участницы
В Олимпиаде 2014 в Сочи приняли участие рекордное количество стран — 88, что превосходит предыдущий рекорд 82, поставленный на предыдущей Зимней Олимпиаде в Ванкувере. Семь стран — Доминика, Мальта, Парагвай, Восточный Тимор, Того, Тонга и Зимбабве — участвуют в Олимпийских Играх впервые.
Виды спорта
98 соревнований по 15 зимним спортивным дисциплинам, объединённых в семь видов спорта, включены в программу зимних Олимпийских игр 2014. Три коньковых вида — фигурное катание, конькобежный спорт и шорт-трек. Шесть лыжных видов — горнолыжный спорт, лыжные гонки, фристайл, лыжное двоеборье, прыжки с трамплина и сноуборд. Два бобслейных вида — бобслей и скелетон. Четыре отдельных вида — биатлон, керлинг, хоккей и санный спорт.

Церемония закрытия
Церемония закрытия была проведена 23 февраля 2014 года с 20:14 по 22:25 по московскому времени на Олимпийском стадионе «Фишт» в Сочи. Церемония была посвящена русской культуре. В ней приняли участие такие всемирно известные российские «звезды», как дирижер и альтист Юрий Башмет, дирижер Валерий Гергиев, пианист Денис Мацуев, певица Хибла Герзмава и скрипачка Татьяна Самуил. Также в представлении приняли участие артисты Большого и Мариинского театров.
Медали
Дизайн медалей Олимпиады в Сочи был обнародован в мае 2013 года. Дизайн представляет ландшафт Сочи, с полупрозрачной секцией, содержащей «лоскутное одеяло» из бриллиантов, представляющих горы. Эта вставка представляет собой мозаику из национальных узоров народов России. Те, кто выиграют золотые медали 15 февраля, получат специальные медали с фрагментами Челябинского метеорита в честь первой годовщины этого события, когда космическое тело упало в озеро Чебаркуль на Урале.

В 2014 году Сочи будет первым Российским городом, где будут проводиться Зимние Игры. Советский Союз (the Soviet Union) принимал в Москве Олимпийские Игры 1980 года ( hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow). Город, где будут проводиться игры – Сочи (The host city is Sochi) имеет население (has a population) 400,000 человек (of 400,000 people) и находится в Краснодарском крае (is situated in Krasnodar Territory) – третьем по счету крупнейшем регионе в России (the third largest region in Russia).
Игры будут организованы (The Games will be organised) двумя кластерами (in two clusters): береговой кластер (a coastal cluster) для соревнований на льду (for ice events) и высокогорный кластер (a mountain cluster), расположенный на горе Красная Поляна (the Krasnaya Polyana Mountain). Это делает Игры в Сочи самыми компактными за все время, т.к. дорога от берегового кластера до высокогорного кластера занимает всего 30 минут.
Олимпийский Парк Сочи (The Sochi Olympic Park) построен вдоль береговой линии Черного Моря (along the Black Sea coast) в долине Имеретинская (in the Imeretinskaya Valley) и все ледяные площадки all the ice venues — Большой ледовый дворец (the Bolshoi Ice Palace), Малый ледовый дворец (the Maly Ice Palace), Олимпийский центр Сочи по фигурному катанию (the Sochi Olympic Skating Centre), центральный стадион (the Central Stadium), Главная Олимпийская деревня (the Main Olympic Village) и т.д. были построены заново (have been built anew).

Sport plays an important role in people’s life. Many people do sport. Everyone chooses the kind of sport he or she likes most of all. There are many championships and sport competitions in the world. They can be local, national or world ones.

One of the most popular sport competitions is the Olympic Games. They are one of the leading sport competitions in the world. The Olympic Games are held every four year. They can be Winter Games and Summer Games, consequently, Winter Games include winter sports and Summer Games include summer sports.

The Olympic Games is a worldwide famous sport event. Every four years the best sportsmen of every country united in national teams meet each other in one selected city to find out who is the strongest, fastest and the sturdiest person in the world. There are two types of these games: summer and winter ones, because all sports are conditionally divided according to seasons.
The event was first organized by the ancient Greeks at the Olympus (a residence of Greek gods) more than 2,700 years ago. Modern games are very different from the first ones and quantity of played sports changes every time depending on their popularity. Summer sports usually include synchronized swimming, volleyball, rhythmic-sportive gymnastics, pole vaulting, athletics, etc. The most popular winter sports are hockey, bobsledding, figure skating, biathlon and skiing. As it was noted before, the programme is changeable: the most popular sport stays, the less popular one disappears for some time (rugby, motor sports and golf).
The winners in every competition get gold, silver and bronze medals and every sportsman desires to win the golden award. It is a big honor for every country to be a host for Olympic Games, because this is a chance to show its power, financial capabilities and the highest hospitality to guests from other countries by means of organization, opening/closing ceremonies of event and Olympic torch relay.

M any people all over the world are interested in sport. Sport helps people to stay healthy and makes them more organized and better disciplined in their daily activities.
They have always paid great attention to sport in our schools, colleges and universities. You can hardly find a school without a gym or a sportsground. Every city and town has a few stadiums or swimming pools, where local or even international competitions are usually held. Traditionally, sport could be divided into professional and amateur sport.
Former Soviet Union and later Ukrainian and Russian sportsmen have set a great number of world records in gymnastics, weightlifting, tennis, swimming, running, high jumping, etc. Our sportsmen also participate in the Olympic Games and always win gold, silver and bronze medals.
The Olympic Games have long history. They started in 776 ВС in Greece and took place every four years for nearly twelve centuries at Olympia. They included many different kinds of sports. All the cities in Greece sent their best athletes to Olympia to compete in the Games. When the Games took place, all the wars stopped. So, the Olympic Games became the symbol of peace and friendship.
Now, there are Summer and Winter Olympic Games. They are held separately. There are always several cities wishing to host the Games. The International Committee of Olympic Games selects the most suitable. They have appeared in 776 BC in Ancient Greece, where people every four years held festivals to please the ancient God Zeus. Later on the Games have disappeared and were revived in the present era, in 1896. The first modern Olympics took place in the capital of Greece, Athens. The old tradition to hold the Games every four years was also revived. So, from then on the Olympic Games took place every four years in different cities of the world. At certain times, such as Second World War, the games were forbidden. The Olympic Games are considered to be the biggest international sports games, which unite people from all over the world. There are two types of Olympic Games: Summer Olympics and Winter Olympics. Ancient Greeks didn’t have Winter Games, so the first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in France. The official emblem of the Olympic Games is a colourful flag with five interlinked rings. В определенные времена, такие как, Вторая мировая война, игры были запрещены. Олимпийские игры являются самыми крупными международными спортивными играми, которые соединяют людей со всего мира. Существует два вида Олимпийских игр: Летние игры и Зимние игры. У древних греков не было зимних игр, поэтому первые Зимние Олимпийские игры были в 1924-м году, во Франции. Официальной эмблемой Олимпийских игр является разноцветный флаг с пятью связанными друг с другом кольцами. Цвета колец синий, красный, желтый, зеленый и черный, так как каждая страна в мире имеет по крайне мере один из этих цветов на своем национальном флаге. Другая идея видит каждый цвет как определенный континент, например, синий цвет, символизирует Европу, желтый – Азию, красный – Америку, черный – Африку и зеленый – Австралию. Олимпийские игры проводились во многих странах, и Россия не исключение. В 1980-м году 22-ые Олимпийские игры проводились в Москве, а в 2014-м году были в Сочи.
